Bear, Spirit Totems

Updated on July 11, 2012

Bear Spirit Animal

There are several types of Bear totems. I am going to give a brief description of what each type of Bear totem means if it has entered your life as a spirit guide. I will also be going over Bear symbolism, how Bear relates to vital functions of the body, and the cycles of the Bear. If you have Bear as your animal totem you will have an affinity for the woods, the natural cycles of Mother Earth, and an interesting relation to trees and water.

I myself have Bear as one of my totems and have incorporated a deep understanding of this marvelous animal into my life. If you have just recently found out that Bear is one of your spirit animals, or just want to learn more about this wonderful creature, this is the lens for you. I hope you enjoy the information, videos, and pictures that I have chosen special for this lens.

Characteristics of all Bear totems

The Bear is a powerful spirit in both image and myth. There are stories of people turning into bears and bears into humans. They have always had a special relation to each other. Bears have also been depicted as gods and constellations. The Great Bear, or Ursus Major is the most easily recognized constellation in the northern hemisphere. The lunar symbology ties Bear to the subconscious and even the unconscious mind, therefore it is deep medicine for those who embrace this animal totem. In some tribes the spirit of Bear never dies. Therefore, has been associated with supernatural powers and a natural power to heal. Most Shamans address Bear as Grandfather. The Navajo regard Bear with as much respect as their fellow human neighbors, which meant that they never killed one unless absolutely necessary. In the Native American zodiac, whoever was born between August 22 - September 22 are in the Medicine Wheel sign of Bear. To have Bear as your spirit animal is associated with being guided to assume a role of leadership, and to be encouraged to exercise your abilities as a healer. If you follow your Bear totem you will be led to a greater balance in body, mind, and spirit.

The Brown Bear

The Brown Bear is a carnivore, but also enjoys berries, nuts and of course honey. The brown bear is especially keen on getting the sweet honey and can smell it from miles away. So, if you have an insatiable sweet tooth and your totem animal is Bear you now know why. People that have brown bear as their guide tend to eat with the seasons. Throughout spring, summer and fall the brown bear stocks up on his fat storage in order to go on a "diet" in the winter. Yes, the brown bear hibernates through the winter, but that doesn't mean that he sleeps the entire time, nor does it mean that he stays in his cave the entire time also. The brown bear stays inside his cave most of the time, but sometimes ventures out to get some fresh air and maybe find some winter berries. If Brown Bear is your totem animal you will find yourself just wanting to stay inside most of the winter, not that all of us can do that, especially if we have a job. But, the desire will be there to stay inside and make your cave comfortable. You will also loose much of your appetite, and may actually loose twenty to thirty pounds over the winter. This would be the same twenty to thirty pounds that you gained over the summer months.

The winter is also a time to do much sleeping and meditating. You may find yourself sleeping extra hours every day, and also a strong desire to meditate for many hours. I personally meditate in my room/cave for many hours in the winter, which makes Brown Bear a very spiritual being. As you totem, Brown Bear teaches strength from within. Hence meditation is your seeking answers from within, and not to rely on others for these answers, but to go within and seek the answers yourself. Brown Bear gives you much inner strength in order to stand up for what you truly know is right. You will find that much respect will come to you for this strength. If Brown Bear has just come into your life you may need to take some time and just be with yourself and meditate in order to bring understanding to current situations. It is time to seek your own answers, and not use the often to easy answers of others. Brown Bear reminds you that it is from within that all true knowledge begins, and to also give you the strength to make sure you say your path for steady progress.

There is great power in wearing a totem amulet close to your person. It can serve as an reminder of our spirit animal in time of need or it can serve as a boost of power to help you stick to your chosen path throughout life.

The Black Bear

The black bear is just a smaller version of the brown bear. The only reason that the brown bear is smaller is to fit into his surrounds better, for he lives in a more condensed forest and has to make it up steeper hills and must be more agile in order to survive in these different forests. Therefore, those who have this amazing bear as their totem will find themselves able to climb the steepest of challenges very easily. The black bear has a tenancy to fully hibernate. They live to a great degree on their stored-up fat. Their body temperature also drops a little and the breathing rate can be cut in half. The depth of their sleep depends upon the amount of fat stored, therefore it is vital to build up that fat over the other seasons. This reflects Black Bears ability to teach those with hold him as their totem how to go with in to find the resources necessary for survival. I have known people that can go weeks without any food at all during the winter months, not that we as humans need to do this, but it is actually good for us to fast once in a while.

During the winter months Black Bears kidneys shut down completely, and scientists are studying this phenomena, in hopes of providing clues to more successful kidney transplants. The kidneys serve as a vital function in the body, not just to excrete urine, but also filtering the blood plasma. Metaphysically speaking, the kidneys are symbols of discernment and discrimination. If Black Bear has shown up in your life, you may ask yourself some important questions...like, Are you being too critical of yourself or others? Are you wearing rose colored glasses? Is your judgment off, or How about those around you?Are you not seeing the core of good deep within all situations? Black Bear medicine can teach you to go deep within so that you can make your choices from a position of power.

Polar Bear

The Polar Bear

To the Eskimo peoples Polar Bear is a source of both physical and spiritual nourishment. On a spiritual level, the polar bear is regarded as the embodiment of the spirit of the North, an animal who possesses ancient wisdom and has shamanic powers. On the physical, the polar is the most aggressive and carnivorous. They are exceptional hunters. Polar bears weigh up to 1600 lbs and are able to knock a 500lb seal out of the water with one blow, which shows they are Incredibly strong. Polar bears are far more adaptable than other bear which is well suited to their excellent survival skills. Though they are one of the largest land carnivores, they are still capable of great speed on both earth and ice, and they are able to swim 100 miles non-stop.

Polar Bear's medicine includes the ability to navigate along the earth's magnetic lines. They have the ability to find sustenance in barren landscapes, be pure of spirit, have strength in the face of adversity, embody solitude, and are expert swimmers through emotional waters. Their abilities also include finding ones way back from the brink, communication with Spirit, interpreting dreams, and the embodiment of death and rebirth. They symbolize transformation, shamans, mystics and visionaries, and defense and revenge.

The polar bear is extremely Intelligent and fearless, native tribes throughout history have held the polar as a desirable ally and spirit helper. The white colour of the polar bear is very significant indeed, for it represents purity of spirit. As this bear is fearless and the universal energy only flows when fear is absent, the polar serves as a valuable ally in getting past fear, both physically and mentally. All of these attributes will be yours if you take into you the spirit medicine of the polar bear.

The Koala Bear

Koala Bear
Koala Bear

Adorable Koala bear resembles the teddy bear, otherwise it is not at all bear-like. Even though he has "bear" as part of his name, he is not like the other bears that we have discussed. Koalas originate from Australia and are marsupial mammals. Marsupials in general as spirit guides teach the importance of mother/child bonding in earliest stage of life. Since the Koala is at first blind and deaf, he is fully dependent on his mother for the first six to twelve months of his life. If Koala bear appears in your life as a totem consider what your relationship is to your mother (or child). Is the bond a good one, or does it need work?

Koala bears are primarily nocturnal, slumbering most of the day. It is because of its extremely low metabolism that Koala sleep 16 to 18 hours each day. As a totem, Koalas are excellent teachers of lucid dreaming and also serve as telepathic messengers.

One of the Koala's messages is the ability to climb over obstacles and hold on to what brings you security. Take things easy and slow down. Watch your diet and don't substitute a food that you are unfamiliar with, especially if you have a health condition. Spend some time in solitude to meditate and take a class in Yoga. View your problems from a different perspective, so that you may over come them. Also, remember you make a difference in the lives of others even if you are not always the life of the party.

Telepathy, dreamworker, lucid dreaming, intuition, meditation, mother-child bond

The Only Man In The World Who Can Swim With A Polar Bear - on YouTube

Grizzly man Mark Dumas, 60, is the only man in the world who can touch a polar bear. And as these incredible pictures show the fearless bear handler from Abbotsford, British Columbia, even goes for dip in his swimming pool where he and 16-year-old polar bear Agee enjoy a watery cuddle together. Mark and wife Dawn, 60, train the 60-stone (800lb) friendly beast - the world's largest land predator - to star in high-budget TV adverts. She has even performed in movies like 'Alaska' in 1995 when she was just a few weeks old. With his incredibly intimate bond Mark wrestles on the grass with Agee, kisses her, puts his head in her huge jaws, and even bear hugs her as she rears up on her hind legs to over seven feet. Mark and Dawn have owned Agee since she was six weeks old and the colossal mammal even lived in their home as a cub where she played with the family dogs and was bottle fed.

@anonymous: The polar bear is one of the most pure animal spirits, but is also the most aggressive bears. If you have the polar bear as one of your totems then you might have challenges linked with flexibility, change and stubbornness and should ask the polar for assistance in overcoming these obstacles. Good luck in your research, and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

      where did my comments go?

I was talking with my dauther about spiritual experiences and related my feelings and association to the Bear. As I said it, I could hear the word Totem in my mind and decided to look it up and came upon this site. Once I dreamed I was atop a mountain and was asked which animal or bird I wanted to be associated with and my first choice was the Bear. In another dream, I'd awakened naked, lying between two polar bears. I wasn't frightened and they appeared nonthreatening and loving. I'm more curious than ever now.

my totems are all four types of bear totems. brown bear, cuddly, protective. always likes to follow me. first time knowing him scared me a lot like startled.

3 black bears, all cubs. first is bigger about 2 years old in a dream, bluff charged and stood on his hind legs to hug. i could literally feel it's sharp claws. Likes to make noise in his sleep waking me up with it.

second black bear cub was on the bus in a dream who now occasionally hops onto my bed and sleep next to me like a teddy bear, the last black bear is a newborn. biting and clawing. to calm it down i gave it my sweater.
