Did you know the rewards and benefits of reading surah yaseen?

Introduction, History and Origin

Before we explore the benefits of reading Surah Muzammil, it is necessary to understand the meaning and context of this Surah. In this section, we shall look at a simple explanation of the Surah including the history, origin and what some of the verses talk about.

Surah Muzammil is a Makki Surah, i.e, said to be revealed in Makkah. Some scholars say that the first section (1-19 verses) of the Surah was revealed in Makkah and the second (the final verse 20) in Madinah. The reasons for this are given below:

  1. The second section contains the Command to pay obligatory zakat, and it is known that the specific rate of zakat with a minimum limit was enjoined in Madinah.

  2. Further, the first nighteen verses are shorter than the final verse and Makki Surahs are shorter than Madinah Surahs as seen in the Quran. This is because the early Makkan verses focused on getting the message of Islam across to the people in simple clear communication whereas the Madinan verses give detailed explanations on the Islamic way of life.

  3. Allah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) refers to him as ‘We’ and ‘Your Lord’ in the first section whereas he refers to himself as ‘He’ in third person in the final verse. This shift is known as ‘iltifat’ and is used to grab the reader’s attention.

Facts about Surah Muzammil

  • Surah muzammil is the 73rd surah of the Quran
  • Al-Muzammil means ‘the Wrapped/Enshrouded One’ (i.e wrapped in clothing)
  • There are twenty ayats in this surah
  • It was revealed in Makkah though it is said to be split between the Makkah-shareef and Madinah-shareef whereby the verses 1-19 were revealed in Mecca and the final verse being revealed in Madinah.
  • Surah Muzammil is one of the first Surahs to be revealed to our Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam) and in the beginning verses, Allah addresses him (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam) in preparation for the coming revelations of the Quran (weighty Word) that is He is going to send down.
  • It commands encourages standing up for half the night – or a little less, or a little more in prayer (Tahajjud) to the Almighty.

The Surah’s name, Al Muzammil means ‘the Wrapped/Enshrouded One’ (i.e wrapped in clothing). It is got from the reference to our Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam), praying at night, wrapped in his cloak.

It contains many Commands from Allah to our Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi wa salam) including regarding the Night Prayer (Tahajjud) and paying obligatory zakat. The first seven verses are directed at our Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam) and it mentions Tahajjud. It says,

‘Oh you who have wrapped up in your garments, Rise to pray in the night except a little, Half of it: or lessen it a little, Or add to it: and recite the Quran as it ought to be recited, Surely We will make it light upon you a weighty Word.’ Al Muzammil 73: 1-7

In these verses, Allah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) talks about the benefits of Night Prayer, when it is to be conducted and what to engage in during that time. As this Surah was revealed in the early times of Prophet hood and revelation, it Commands our prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam) and his companions to recite the Quran in full as what was revealed of it was brief enough to recite by then.

The verses 10 to 13, address our Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam) to be bear patiently with what the unbelievers and idolators say to him (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam), and leave them to Allah, who will deal with them. It also talks about the heavy Fetters, Flaming Fire, food that chokes and a painful punishment that awaits the unbelievers. Verses 14 describes the terrible events of the Day Of Judgement while Verse 15 to 17 tells mankind that the Prophet Muhammad (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam) has been sent to us as an Apostle, a witness against us just as an Apostle was sent to the Pharoah, who disbelieved and was sent a terrible punishment. It warns those who disbelieve as seen in the verse 17,

“How then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the Day which shall make children grey-headed?”

In the last and final twentieth verse, the Quran was too long to fully recite during Tahajjud and hence Allah tells our Prophet (Sallalahu Alaihi wa Salam),

“Surely your Lord knows that you pass in prayer nearly two thirds of the night, and (sometimes) half of it, and (sometimes) a third of it, and (also) a party of those with you; and Allah measures the night and the day. He knows you are not able to do it so He has turned to you (mercifully), therefore, read what is easy of the Quran. He knows that there is some among you sick, and others who travel in the land seeking of the bounty of Allah, therefore read as much of it as is easy (to you)...”

Allah (Subhana wa Ta’ala) is so Merciful, subhanallah, He relaxed his prior command to recite the full Quran at night because it had become too long and he knew it couldn’t be fully recited in the Night Prayer.

The verse continues to say,

“...and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate and offer to Allah a goodly gift, and whatever of good you send on beforehand, you will find it with Allah; that is best and greatest in reward; and ask forgiveness of Allah, surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”

This continuation of the last verse Commands to pay the prescribed alms (Zakat), encourages one to do good deeds and ask forgiveness of Allah.
