BUY THE TRUTH AND SELL IT NOT (2)
SELL IT NOT
Continuing on the theme, "BUY THE TRUTH AND SELL IT NOT," I shall explain the second half of the sentence, which is "SELL IT NOT. " By faith, we have become Christians and believe in Jesus Christ and His values, which are tied to that of God for Jesus is the manifestation of God in the flesh. The following two verses show that Jesus is the manifestation of God.
- JOHN 1:1, 14
- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- (14) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Other than Jesus Christ, no one is perfect on the earth and if we as imperfect souls should trade in our belief of Jesus as the Messiah, we shall be on the fast track to damnation and hell. The fall may be imperceptible at first for Satan is very sly and cunning, and able to mask our perception of the truth. We shall see that liars will be condemned.
God who is the only true God in heaven and earth is the personification of complete truth. Beside Him, no one else is truth.
LYING IN THE BIBLE
The Old Testament and New Testament of the Bible both contain statements that God cannot lie. Truth is basic to God's nature and telling the truth is the 9th of the 10 Commandments, which is: "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour" (Exodus 20:16). Bearing false witness means lying.
GOD CANNOT LIE
- God is not a man, that he should lie;
- Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.
- For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie:
- For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself ... That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie,
Liars are condemned both in the Old Testament and New Testament.
- But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.
- A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.
- That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish.
- But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
TYPES OF LIES
Many classified lies widely different from each other. Here lies are classified as only two types, ones that do hurt others or those who do. not.
ABRAHAM (Genesis 12: 11) told his wife to lie that Sarah was his sister when they were in Egypt. Abraham feared for his own life and that why he told his wife to lie.
ABRAHAM, man of faith whom God chose to bless for his faith in God and it was counted for righteousness (Genesis 15:6). The land of Canaan was promised him and his descendants were blessed. Futhermore, all the families of the earth would also be blessed in the name of Abraham. He departed from Haran and as he journeyed to Egypt because there was a famine in the land. Abraham warned his wife, Sarah that she was his sister because he feared they would kill him but not his wife. He lied to save his own life and he felt he had no alternative. God did not chastise his action though he did not rely on God to help him out. Instead the Lord plagued Pharaoh, and his house with great plagues, because of Sarai, Abram's wife (Genesis 12:17). She was very beautiful and Abraham feared the Egyptians would take his wife and killed him.
Remember the 9th COMMANDMENT. The motivation to lie was different in Abraham's case from that of lying in the 9th Commandment. This is lying to get the other person into trouble for gain or other motives.
JEZEBEL (1 King 21:7), a Phoenician Princess married King Ahab of the Northern Kingdom when Israel was divided into Northern and Southern kingdoms. She turned Ahab away from God toward the worship of the Phoenician god, Baal. King Ahab was under her control and she led the Hebrews into idolatry and sexual immorality. Jezebel had many prophets killed. Elijah challenged 450 prophets of Baal to a competition (1 Kings 18) and Baal was exposed as powerless.
1 Kings 18:40 showed the prophets of Baal were slaughtered. Elisha succeeded Elijah as the prophet of God, King Ahab had died and Joram ruled in his stead. The prophet Elisha instigated a revolt against the king and his servant was told to anoint Jehu, general of the army as king of Israel. He told him the Lord had appointed him to be king of Israel and to wipe out the sinful house of Ahab. Jehu's brother officers accepted what Jehu said and hailed him as king of Israel. Jehu killed Joram, son of Jezebel and the king's body was thrown into Naboth's vineyard, where Ahab was cursed by Elijah.
Jehu went looking for the hated Jezebel, the mother of Joram and wife of Ahab. It was at the instigation of Jezebel that Naboth was killed because Ahab wanted Naboth's vineyard and he refused to sell it to the king. So she plotted against the death of Naboth. Jehu went seeking for Jezebel and found her waiting at an upstairs window.of the palace. He ordered her servants to throw her down and drove over her bloodstained body. After Jehu had eaten and drunk, he ordered her buried (2 Kings 9:34). What was left of her was "the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands" (2 Kings 9:35),
"This is the word of the Lord, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezebel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel" (2 Kings 9:36).
This was the sad end of Jezebel, a pagan princess who sought to kill Naboth for his vineyard in order to appease her greedy and spineless husband, Ahab.
NEW TESTAMENT LIARS
ANANIAS AND SAPPHIRA (ACTS 5:1-11)
In the New Testament, the followers of Jesus Christ were very fervent and sold their properties and donated the money to the church (Acts 4:31-37). Ananias and his wife, Sapphira also sold their land, but withheld a portion of the sales, having decided that they did not wish to give it all to the common purse. In chapter 5, Ananias presented his donation to Peter claiming that it was the entire amount. Peter answered. "Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto me, but unto God.
Ananias died on the spot, and as a result, everyone who heard the tale became afraid. Three hours later, his wife told the same lie and suffered the same fate. In the book of Acts 5:1-11, Ananias and Sapphira gave a sizable amount from the proceeds of their sale of possession, and offered it in a lying attitude and become immortalized as negative examples of lying to Peter, but more importantly to God. .
The amount of dollars is unimportant. What is important are the attitude, thought, effort, and preparation that go into the offerings. Ananias and Sapphira had total control over how much of the proceeds of the sale of their land was given to the church. Their sin lay in misrepresenting the amount they were giving. They wanted everyone to think they were sacrificing all which was only a portion. They were complete liars wishing for their peers to praise them, but ended in lying to God instead for the money was supposed to be given to God. This is their tragedy resulting in death for both of them. They lied to give themselves a better status in the eyes of men. They failed to please God in their deceit.
PETER'S THREE DENIALS
The story of Peter's three persistent denials of his Lord that he did not know Jesus and was not one of His followers, makes us shudder to think that it is possible for an apostle of Jesus to not only lie but swear as well when his own life was in jeopardy (Mt 26:72). We really would not know our true self unless we are tested as in the case of Peter.
Remember Peter was the only aposlte who tried to find out what was happening to Jesus after the soldiers took him into custody. He followed at a distance. All the rest of the other ten apostles abandoned Jesus to His fate. How are we to judge? Judas Iscariot sold Him for thirty pieces of silver. All fled. Peter was the only one who still had the guts to find out what happened later. But when tested, Peter denied not once, but three times! Would Peter be rated better than the other eleven apostles? His actions only hurt himself and not others. God did not punish him for his actions, but his own conscience would bother him for some time.
GOD'S ATTITUDE TO LYING
God's attitude toward lying is strongly stressed throughout both the Old Testament and New Testament. The righteous are called upon to hate lying (Proverbs 13:5), to avoid it (Zephaniah 3:13), to utterly reject their company (Psalm 40:4; 101:7), and to pray to be delivered from it (Psalm 119:29). Lying can lead to more worse crimes (Hosea 4:1,2).
We should obey and follow God's attitude to lying and that is to hate, avoid, utterly reject and to pray for deliverance from lying. Praise and thank the Lord.
