The title of "BUY THE TRUTH AND SELL IT NOT; ALSO WISDOM, AND INSTRUCTION AND UNDERSTANDING" is taken from the Old Testatment, Proverbs 23:23.

The book of Proverbs is written by Solomon, one of the wisest men in history. God gave him the wisdom which he did not ask, "And God said unto him, Because thou has asked this thing, and has not asked for thyself, nor has asked the life of thine enemies; but has asked for thyself understandig to discern judgment; (12) Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an undertanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee (1 Kings 3:11-12).

This third article on "BUY THE TRUTH AND SELL IT NOT" is focused on buy WISDOM, AND INSTRUCTION, AND UNDERSTANDING, which is the latter portion of the proverb. Equipped with truth, wisdom, instruction and understanding are required requisites for complete understanding of the truth. The three qualities enhance the secret explanation of the proverb. Withou wisdom, one may fumble his path to truth, without understanding, may misinterpret the meaning and fail to see the full benefits of truth given by God.

Truth is still a mystery to many in the world, which needs exploration. Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding (Proverbs 23:23). Once you have bought the truth, you should buy wisdom, instruction and understanding so you have wisdom on how to use the knowledge, able to follow instruction and understand the full meaning of the preciousness of the gift which you have bought.

 Solomon: An Incisive Dedision
Solomon: An Incisive Dedision

The Concise English Dictionary The quality or state of being wise; knowledge and experience together with ability, to make use of them rightly, practical discernment, sagacity, judgment, common sense;

Wisdom is the "ability to judge correctly and to follow the best course of action, based on knowledge and understanding". The wisdom teachings of the Bible follow from the two great themes of the Ten Commandments and the Greatest Commandments of Jesus We must reverence God, our Creator, and respect for all persons.

For instance, you have bought a new car. It is a different model from what you previously possessed before. There are many new features which you are unfamiliar with and you must know how to operate them, for example, The new car has all the new facilities, but you are unable to use them unless you start reading and try to understand how to operate them. It is the same as buying the truth with all its wonderful gifts, but you would be unable to benefit unless you learn about its usefulness and how to operate them. It would be like a white elephant which is useless to you.

New Features

1. Remote keyless entry

This "Keyless entry systems" allow you to unlock your car by pushing a button on a remote. The ability to quickly get into your car without fumbling for the key is an important safety feature, especially at night in poorly-lit areas.

2. OnStar System

With OnStar, help from a real-live person is always just a button-push away. Got a flat tire? Someone following you? Just push the button. OnStar advisors can summon a tow truck or a cop, or if you're locked out.

3. Rear-seat DVD player

Got kids? Movies-on-the-go can make long trips easier for both you and them.

4. GPS navigation system

Using the Global Positioning Satellite System and sensors in the car, GPS navigation systems can pinpoint your exact location, give you turn-by-turn directions (via a small video screen, spoken voice) to help you find your way.

Until you have learnt how to use the new features of the car, they will not benefit you and with the concept of buying the truth, without wisdom of how it functions, it is utterly useless to you. You need instructions before you can function and then you will understand the workings of the new features.

Book of Job - An examination of the problems of evil and human suffering

Proverbs - Wise sayings and observations designed to develop attitudes and behaviour

Ecclesiastes - It teaches that great accomplishments and earthly possessions do not bring lasting happiness. True satisfaction comes from serving God and following His will for our lives.

Psalms - The reader is exhorted and instructed in the way of righteousness (1; 37; 119).

Song of Songs - To present God's love for His bride Israel or Christ's love for His Church

Solomon tries to drive home that wisdom comes from knowledge and understanding. Knowledge is the acquisition of a set of facts. Understanding is the ability to apply and build on facts. One must have both knowledge and understanding for one without the other has little value. Knowledge comes from listening. Time and again, Solomon stresses that hearing instruction leads to wisdom. He further advises that receiving constructive criticism willingly is necessary. These two pieces of advice are easily given but hard to follow and we have to set aside our egos which are difficult to conquer. Here are some of Solomon’s teachings.

  • A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

  • Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.

  • Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

  • The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

All people everywhere recognize that they have spiritual needs and require guidance and direction to find answers to the questions of life for eternity. They know they need God but they may not know how to achieve the right answers. Asking parents, colleagues, friends or ministers may help a little bit but not the complete correct responses.

Many learned men do not always attempt to provide answers for the serious spiritual questions of life, death or life beyond. If they do try, they cannot prove their answers are right or wrong, and the results are often contradictory.

Jeremiah 10:23 -

  • The way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.

Isaiah 55:8-9

  • For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
  • For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

You need to find someone who can direct you to the correct source of spiritual direction and guidance. Man cannot completely lead you to wisdom, but the Bible with the inspiration of God can reveal it to you. However, you must be persistent in reading the Bible every day to get the best results.

Without instruction, one cannot understand the problem or how to solve it. Let us say you have a very nice, expensive piece of cloth and you want to make a beautiful dress for yourself. If you have no idea of sewing, you are at a loss of what to do next. You look at the instructions on how to cut and sew a dress from a pattern book. Now you have something to go on.

You read the instructions over and over again before you begin. The material is before you but you must follow the instructions in the pattern book before you take the first step in cutting the cloth.. Once you have mastered the intructions, then you put it into practice. Without the instruction guide book, you do not understand how to get on with the job.

Instruction helps guide you to understanding. One step leads to another. You cannot leap over the next step before you or you may stumble over the missed step. A child does not grow overnight into an adult. The child matures into a teenager, and a teenager grows into an adult. The newly baptized Christian will also mature in the same way, needing milk as a child before eating meat.

The Holy Spirit Guides
The Holy Spirit Guides

The Bible claims that it teaches the true answers to these questions regarding the meaning of life and eternity. You can find in the Bible has all the answers that you seek. Here are some examples:

Psalms 119:105

  • Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

John 17:17

  • Your word is truth.

2 Timothy 3:16,17

  • All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The Bible affirms that belief in the gospel of Jesus Christ and His teaching will give you the spiritual direction you need to show the meaning and purpose of life. Study the Bible diligently and you can find these answers in God's word.

Only in the Bible can you find truth, for truth is a priceless gem with its many facets waiting to be discovered. Truth can set you free from the bonds of sin, and you can soar to limitless heights of heaven like the eagle. Truth by itself is motionless unless you have wisdom, which opens its mysteries followed by instruction and understanding. The book of Proverbs is profound, deeply complicated but can be solved with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. All glory to the Lord God.

You have clearly explained the difference between true wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Only God can grant us true wisdom, because knowledge without understanding is quite inadequate.

      Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. However, I do not celebrate Christmas because it is based on pagan rites. Please read my hub, WHY DO CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE PAGAN CHRISTMAS?

Have an enjoyable holiday. God bless.

Truth by itself is motionless unless you have wisdom, which opens its mysteries followed by instruction and understanding.
