Choosing a Bible for my Boyfriend
Overwhelmed by the Choices?
For years, I thought a Bible was a Bible. I thought they were all the same. They are not.
There are literally zillions of Bibles for all kinds of purposes to choose from. The good news is that the perfect one just for him is out there, too.
It is easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer number. Not only do you have to worry about different translations. You also have to worry about the reader's skill level, even his other interests.
I've tried to come up with some criteria that will make it a little easier. I hope you find at least something that is helpful to you here.
What kind of guy is he?
And what will he be using it for?
Has he already enrolled in seminary? Is he just doing whatever it takes to get you to go out with him? Does he play football and hang out with the guys? Is he an electronics geek? Is he soft and sensitive? Is he confident?
Will he be using it in a study group? Is it for daily personal reflection? How about life application?
Matching study group
Study groups often use the same version, but sometimes have several versions available for comparison. Most places will have plenty of Bibles to borrow, but it is nice to bring your own trusted friend along. It will last longer if you bring a separate journal for notes.
When I say readability, I don't necessariy mean easy to read. What I mean is to try to match his skill level. There are Bibles specifically for toddlers. There are Bibles in the original language for scientists to study. Getting one that matches his skill level will encourage him to move up the ladder, growing in Christ.
Generic or Denominational
Some denominations have their own preferred translation. This is a personal choice you and he will make.
A Bible should be a pleasure to read. It should look nice, match the lifestyle of the owner and be inviting to read.
Every translation will have lost something the original had. It has been filtered through the values, beliefs and culture of the person or persons doing the translation.
Just about everybody you ask will have an opinion about which one is best. Don't listen to any of them. Unless you're a Bible scholar, none of that matters. What matters is which one encourages your boyfriend to grow in his relationship with Christ.
When your guy is new to Christ
Put together primarily for young teens. I think it's a good stepping stone for anyone recently introduced to Our Lord.
Far more than just a Bible. Answers to lots of questions in the life a teenage boys.
