Set Apart

After many years spent seeking God and praying from age 12, I have learned that there is no better way by which we can mature and build a closer walk with God and our Lord Jesus Christ than through prayer.

I have always desired to be one that walked closely with God. I realize that goes with living a life of prayer and being steeped in the word of God inexorably. Over the years God has trained, equipped and led me little step by little step into the thrilling life of prayer and the word. He has ushered me into the presence all embracing presence of the Holy Spirit to walk with Him just like the disciples walked and talked with Jesus Christ. Whereas it has been a long arduous walk, it is all because I have been resistant, disobedient and sometimes downright impossible to deal with, but His love and mercy have prevailed. The life of prayer I always suspected would be boring, alienating and limiting has turned out to be fulfilling, essential and one I could not do without as a Christian. Coupled with His word, I should confess I have never felt more empowered and ready to face life and what it brings along with it.

In 2006 I learned that there was such a thing as a Spirit of Prayer which Amy Semple Mcpherson was said to have had. Amy Semple Mcpherson was the great female evangelist who built Angelus Temple in California. Born in Ontario Canada in 1890 to a father that was 35 years older than her mother, Aimee was born to controversy but her own life would be even more controversial as she pursued the call of God on her life and overcame many odds in an era when not many women were in full time ministry. Lydia Prince, the wife of well known Bible teacher Derek Prince, who herself became a woman of prayer and was greatly used by God in Israel where she settled from her hometown in Holland wrote about this spirit of prayer that was on Amy Semple Mcpherson in the mid 1900s, I read about it in the early 2000s in Lydia's book "Appointment In Jerusalem" and decided I wanted to be just like these women from very diverse backgrounds who had found God and accomplished much in His name. While I was meeting Amy Semple Mcpherson for the first time, it was not my first time to read "Appointment in Jerusalem", but as normally happens at the appointed time, God opened my heart to receive a message that would deepen my prayer life and enhance my walk with Him. When I read about Lydia Christensen Prince's desire to have a spirit of prayer and discovered that she experienced it, I believed it for my walk too. I was on a 14 day water fast that the Holy Spirit had led me into.

A Time To Fast

Since I had not fasted in a long time, the regimen proved to be rigorous and difficult but I was determined to do it. I suffered many headaches, hiccups, and faced many challenges in my body as a whole but I persisted with my fast because the reasons for the fast far outweighed the physical suffering. I deeply desired a closer walk with God and set my heart to see him fervently, bringing my flesh under so I could be subject to Him without the flesh getting in the way. I had a number of requests that I brought before God and in retrospect, everyone of those requests the Lord God almighty has gone on to fulfill or I am still walking in them, on the whole they were requests pertaining to my spiritual growth and a renewed walk with Him.

One of my pastor friends must have been very concerned about me during that time, he kept calling and checking on me. I had no doubt he was trying to discourage me from continuing with the fast after the fourth day and I regret I told him.from day 4 or so. I persisted until the 9th day when I finally broke the fast.

That fast proved to be epic in preparing me and my family for everything that has happened to us since then. It was a time of renewal, refreshing and refocusing. I can testify today that since then my prayer life has never been the same. In fact my prayer life and awareness grew to such an extent that we founded a ministry that teaches and encourages people to pray. Not only that, we believe in being obedient to God and that when He speaks to us through prayer as he normally does, we are ready and equipped to act on those commands. We accomplish that through this same ministry. When God gives you that spirit of prayer, you find joy in spending time in the presence of God, praying for others and for yourself. You do not grow weary of approaching the throne to plead for others. Prayer becomes a joy not a drag. When you sit in the presence of God you know that it is real and things happen as a result. You are able to know the mind of God because the Holy Spirit who is always with you opens your mind to God's. it is amazing how you miss the presence of God if you have not spent time with Him, but the most amazing thing is that you always feel really close to God all the time whether you are in prayer or not.

Prayer now flows effortlessly and flawlessly from sanctified lips and a pure heart cleansed by His word. I have also learned that whenever we spend time with God in prayer, the Holy Spirit will always lead us back to God's word to read and study it. God wants us to know him intimately through prayer and wholly through His word. When we come on bended knees, He sends us back with hearts yearning to know more of Him from His word. My prayer times therefore are the times when I read His word, seek His face and learn a lot from Him. The personal Bible Study and prayer time are not inseparable in my life.

I set up this hub to share what I am learning with all those who will care to read and who like me are seeking a closer relationship and walk with God. Is that not what all children of God should desire? Be ready to be challenged because I do not believe in the stagnation of a Christian's life. God never changes, but we are on a journey to being more like Him each day. God bless you as you follow my hubs and I pray that you will be forever changed.

James A Watkins; Oh, why am I laughing? Nothing impressive my brother, it took a lot of God to do that. Yes, I just drank water and nothing else. Thanks for reading my hub. Try going on a half or one day fast to spend time in the presence of God. I am sure you will be blessed! It has to be that pressing for you to do it, I guess.
