Create a Wiccan Altar

Updated on December 11, 2014

Setting Up Your First Wiccan Altar

Creating an altar in your home strengthens your connection to the Divine, referred to as Goddess and God in Wicca. Ust your altar as the focal point for your spells and/or rituals.

Look around your home and find a good spot for your altar. Some traditions call for the altar to face in a certain direction, but placing the altar in front of a window works just fine.

Altars should be made of wood if at all possible -- oak and willow are both powerful choices. Altars can range from small and simple to large and elaborate. Whatever the size or composition, your altar will be special because it is yours.

Altar cloth

Altars are typically covered with a cloth, the color of which can vary from season to season and Sabbat to Sabbat. Altar cloths should be made of a natural material, such as cotton.

The best altar cloths, like any Wiccan tool, is the one that you make yourself. Even if you are a beginner at sewing, Goddess loves homemade objects most.

Starter Altar Cloth

An altar can be draped with the same cloth every day or you can mix it up according to the season, your mood, and your personal taste.

The Triple Goddess denotes the stages of a woman's life -- girl, mother, and crone. Integrating the pentagram into the cloth eliminates the need to place one on your altar.

Elements of A Wiccan Altar - Wiccan Tools

You don't need to include all these items if you don't have room. An altar can be as simple as a pentacle with a candle.

You can set up an altar on any surface. If need be, use your dining room table. A stump in your yard makes a perfect altar.

  • Cauldron
  • Broom
  • Athame
  • Boline
  • Wand
  • Censer
  • Pentacle
  • Candles
  • God image
  • Goddess image
  • Altar cloth

The athame, a ceremonial dagger, is an integral part of Wiccan rituals and altars. Athames direct power and are often used to cast circles. Typically, athames will have a black handle. Runes may be inscribed on the blade to increase the power of the athame.

Celtic design and gemstones give this athame a special look.

Your Altar Is Great The Way It Is

You can not be wrong in setting up your altar. Don't worry if you don't have all of the elements. Just the fact that you are beginning to work with the tools is enough. Relax.

Goddess Side of Altar

Face your altar. Place a Goddess symbol (such as a cow figurine) or green candle on the left side, Goddess' side of the altar. Also placed on the left is the bowl of water (to represent the Water Elemental) for every ritual, and the bell used to open your ceremony.

Crystals also are placed on the Goddess side of the altar. Finally, place your chalice, filled with wine or water, and a plate for whatever food is used as cakes in the Wine and Cake ceremony at the end of your ritual.

Use Green Candles to Represent Goddess

Green candles make a perfectly fine representation of Goddess.

God Side of Altar

Place a symbol of the God, such as a bull or buck figurine, on the right side of the altar. A red candle can also be used as a representation of the God.

Also placed on the right side is the bowl of salt, which is used to represent the Earth Elemental. Incense (used to represent the Air Elemental), wands and your boline, all of which are related to the God, should be placed on this side of the altar.

Use a Red Candle to Represent God

Represent the male aspect of the Divine with a red candle on your altar. Homemade is always best, but store-bought candles will work fine.

Goddess and God

Wiccans tend to emphasize Goddess in their worship, but God holds an equally important place. Goddess and God are partners in creation and fertility and should be recognized as such.

Center of Altar

The pentacle gets the place of honor in the center of the article. Use a pentacle made of metal or wood. If you don't have one, find one on the Internet and print it off or create one of your own in a drawing program.

Place the censer at the top center and the cauldron at the bottom center. Spell materials are also placed in the center portion of the altar.

Cauldrons serve many purposes on your altar. You can mix elements of your spells and potions in cauldrons. Fill the cauldron with water, bless the water, then dip your magical tools in them to purify them.

A Simple WIccan Altar

All of the items pictured here were either handmade or purchased from a thrift store, with the exception of the pentacle. Having a beautiful altar does not have to be expensive or complicated. Feel free to use candles liberally on your altar. Decorate with flowers, pine cones and other natural things.

Out Door Altars

Got a stump in your yard? Worshiping out-of-doors brings you closer to Nature and Goddess, so stumps make perfect altars. You can also use a fallen log for an altar.

Get Creative!

Your altar should reflect you as well as the Divine. After all, the Divine is part of all of us.

Lovely lens with great ideas here! I used to have an alter in a home I lived in about 10 years ago but my current home has no ideal space for one sadly!!

Ah, this brings back many memories when I lit candles at an altar nearly every night and gave thanks for being alive and the bounty of my life, however thin it may have felt at the time. Beautifully done. Thank you.

Mmmmm, my son (thirties) has been interested in new age / wiccan things for a number of years, the strange things appearing in his room now seem to make a little sense. An interesting read, thank you. I am very happy to offer a blessing for a well thought-out and presented lens.
