What is Dark Magick and The Dark Arts?

Updated on August 23, 2017

What's So Dark About The Dark Arts?

The terms "Dark Magick" and "The Dark Arts" both describe a category of occultism that involves interaction with the hidden, rejected and denied aspects of nature. Nature refers not only to the stuff going on around you but includes human nature as well. The Dark Arts practitioner especially needs to understand and accept the dark aspects of their own nature. Another important point I need to make clear up front about Dark Magick is that, while often stigmatized by mainstream spiritual paths, it is a set of techniques that are useful to anyone interested in embracing their entire self holistically. The Dark Arts are best employed by those who also work with the "Light" sides of nature. Light vs. Dark, in this context, is a false dichotomy. I hope to dispel some common misconceptions about the Dark Arts.

Why Choose the Dark Side?

I personally feel that "Dark Side"/"Light Side" is a false dichotomy. Dark Magick doesn't necessarily involve malevolent goals. This popular misconception comes mainly from our fiction. The protagonist in most fiction is an abnormally pure person and their antagonist is typically an abnormally evil character. It is true that some people get involved with the hidden, rejected and twisted forces of nature because their goals demand that they seek out less benevolent forces. This is certainly not the only motivation for delving into the shadows. The truth is that you don't have to choose Dark or Light alone. The Taoist Yin/Yang symbol is a useful way to express this concept.

There are many Dark Magicians who are first and foremost knowledge seekers, motivated to transcend all false dichotomies and move beyond good and evil. These "Dark Magicians" are simply those who have the courage and drive to explore their own shadow. Once inside the shadow, the demonic and bestial "entities" found there can be recruited into the magician's service. Ideally they can be healed and fully integrated into the practitioner's consciousness. The results being that the entity's life force, experience and skills eventually become directly available to the magician with no more resistance. The healed and integrated shadow entity can now continue to grow healthy in the light of consciousness, retaining it's quintessential nature and now participating in a greater united consciousness. This process is similar to some forms of psychotherapy. In shamanic practice, this is often referred to as "soul retrieval."

Left Hand Path Definition - Featured Video

In this YouTube video Jeremy Crow discusses the difference between the Left Hand Path and the Right Hand Path in spirituality.

Which Arts Are Dark?

Traditional "Dark Arts" include the practice of demonic evocation, the breaking of taboos, necromancy, sexual rites, treasure hunting, berserker combat, shapeshifting, gaining and employing animal familiars, dealings with savage gods, the use of plant intoxicants/entheogens and the casting of curses, etc...

A Dark Magickian may practice any combination of these traditional arts as well as some more modern ones. Hypnosis, Chaos Magick, Neo-Druidism and work with extra-terrestrial (and otherwise alien) intelligences are some of the relatively recent developments which all include their own explorations of the dark and disturbing side of things.

Even such things as traditional and modern creative arts (painting, poetry, music, ceremony, film making, dance, etc...) can, and often do involve the deep and sincere explorations of the broken and refused. The resulting experience is communicated and/or recorded through their preferred modality. Those artists who dare to draw up leviathan with a hook and express that can certainly be considered as practitioners of the Dark Arts.

The Shadow is the Holy Guardian Angel - Featured Video

Jeremy Crow explains that the Holy Guardian Angel so often spoken of in Western Occultism can be identified with the Jungian Shadow and even with Satan and Lucifer.

The practice of the dark arts sounds to me like a middle path philosophy where the individual simply accepts and embraces all aspects of the self. Sounds cool. I wonder, does the Dark Arts also accept and embrace those aspects of personality that desire to commit heinous crimes against others?

@anonymous: ~~~ Ya know, I've said the same thing many times, most folk can not appreciate the bluntness used. Myself, I embrace the Darkness, and am at ease amidst the shadows in illumination and dark. If you know thy Darkness there is nothing to fear. Without fear, there is no such thing as 'bad' nor 'evil'... only knowledge = power, passion, strength, and freedom in mind, heart, body, and Spirit. :)

The balance is most important not dark or light, black or white.

The balance must be preserved, regardless of the sacrifices.

Humans are here to preserve the balance, but we forgot how.

Why does one study any form of science and art? To study the Dark Arts is to study the nature of one's self and also to explore the paths of magick that uses the crude emotions, dark emotions, and anger into something useful and productive. Emotions are our driving force and to be ignorant of the human's capacity of power in the occult is to be ignorant of life. Explore all paths and learn that there is no good or evil, there is only power, knowledge, and wisdom.

Names are names, and humans must categorize everything as good or bad. In reality, there is no such thing as the "dark" or "light" path. It is all magick. It is all occult. It is all natural.

Believe what you wish, but humans are always performing "light" and "dark" as it is all in perspective. Truth, beauty, and many other variables in life are judged in the eyes in the beholder. They are not fact or truth. These are all opinions backed up by years of ignorance (and ignorance blatantly means lack of knowledge or understanding).

Therefore do not condemn the dark arts, but embrace it and study it. If you do not agree because it is "evil" then take the lessons learned and make them into your daily agenda to better your life.

This is merely my opinion and I do not care to know how other's feel about it. I purely wrote this to give another thought on the subject. I hope you enjoyed it.

      Good day,

      -Anonymous

@anonymous: No such thing as the "wrong" side. Don't get me wrong....I don't believe in harming others through any method of prayer, spell, or sending negative thoughts...but I do believe everyone is an individual and needs to find their own path. There is no right side or wrong side. I do, however, question people who threaten a burning "hell" for eternity upon their fellow man if they have a different belief system. To me, that is an evil way of thinking. It's fear based....which is the opposite of love. If people are happy with who they are.. and are truly at peace with themselves...I doubt that the thought (and the threat) of "hell" would even enter their minds. Although I do believe that "hell" is the manifestation of fear and illusion, solely created in ones own mind.

@anonymous: Exactly...why do people categorize everything as good or bad? True magick is neither dark or light...it just is. Human emotions are a complex thing...a mixture of many thoughts and feelings. Learning about the self and how we react to our emotions...and gaining insight on how we might channel those emotions in a more positive way, can only bring peace and enlightenment. The more knowledge and wisdom we gain...the better we can help others (by example) explore their own enlightenment. Our egocentric selves trick us into believing that we should fear others who explore different paths....therefore labelling them as something "bad". We are all unique beings who find beauty in many different ways...and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. We shouldn't condemn anything....what we should be doing is finding what works for ourselves. It's surprising what we find out in our journey of self discovery. There is something to be learned from everyone....so embrace the knowledge gained...don't fear it.

Well dark magic is running against a wall and having the power to smash it. Stupid somehow yet sometimes useful I guess. I prefer flow though. There is no will to bend the world to. You trick yourself into it Mr. and Mrs. Ego. White magic doesn't feel so magical you might say. You feel your "will" if there is tension between your way and your believes. You believe the world to be different from your ideals? You believe your efforts to be fruitless? Well... that's a common mistake leading to a need of dark magic. Things are... I guess. We won't ever know how they are. Don't overestimate your power. Changing things is punching air.

Forget about will and there won't be any need for dark magic.

Nice work and well put; people have too long associated "darkness" with "malevolence" and "evil" and this is just not so. To shun the dark is to shun parts of nature, including our own nature. Lensrolled to http://www.squidoo.com/witchcraftsmagicandspells.

The Formula to Become One with the Powers of Darkness is "Xeper ir Xem". Ingest the Poison Word and start thy Quest, for the End of Days is upon us.

The only serious book in the list is that by Edred Thorson.

The Schrecks are pathetic fugitives from US law at best. Ask Barry Dubin (AKA "Nikolas Schreck", the Jewish would-be nazi) to "lend you an ear" :-)

Change is coming with the "New World Order". Though not my king, he has arrived and walks among us in the shaddows. Order will be brought forth from the chaos, however; it will only be an illusion.

The Great War will soon follow. Those who are chosen to stay will bear witness to the events for the generations that will follow and must be prepaired to defend New Zion.

Lucifer is actually not the ruler over all of hell. He takes care of the abyss yes, but the majority of hell is actually of anarchy. Lucifer is not exactly the same thing as satan presay... truthfully, there are 8 satans...

      Lucifer is 1 on them

      Then it's Envy

      Sloth

      Greed

      Lust

      Wrath

      Gluttony

      and then Pride

      >>>yes the seven deadly sins of hell are indeed the other seven satans... the creater of the anime and manga "angel sanctuary" describes in full detail... the seven satans to hell is like seven shogun to japan, and lucifer is the emperor... the real power belongs to the military

Lucifer as far as I can determine actually means Light Bearer, and is attributed to the morning Star, Venus. Light/Dark...its neither, its how you work and what you choose to do, there are countless shades of grey.
