How to be Saved by Jesus Christ

Updated on July 30, 2016

You were created by a loving God.

The world around us tells us that we are all accidents of nature. Some product of random events over time. They say we began as ooze evolving into monkeys and now humans. The worldly attitude is that we live, we die, and to grab all that we can while on this earth. In contrast the Bible tells us we are not simply adaptations but we are here for a purpose, and we can find the ultimate fulfillment by finding a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Creation of Light by Gustave Doré
Creation of Light by Gustave Doré

God Created You

Psalm 139: 13-16 "You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous-how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed."

God knew you well before you were born, even while you were in your mother's womb. He knew all about your family and your life up until now. He wants to give you an all new start and a new way of living. He can do that when you give him your life. Why would you do that? Because...

God Wants You

John 17:3 "And this is the way to have eternal life - to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth."

God is not some "force", an unspeaking or unseeing idol up in the sky, or merely an alternative name for your own self-esteem. God is a person, your creator, who created you to be in a relationship with him. Why? Because...

God Loves You

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life"

You can turn control of your life over to God, because He loves you and wants only the best for you. His love for you is so great that He gave His only son Jesus, to die on the cross for you. We'll talk more about that in a moment. I just want to make sure you realize that when you trust God, you are trusting the One who created you. When you turn your life over to Him, you are giving your life to the One who knows you best, inside and out. Don't you think a that's a perfect place to put your trust?

What is sin?

James 4:17 "Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it."

I John 3:4 "Everyone who sins is breaking God's law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God."

Most people don't understand the concept of sin. We live in a fairly amoral world where the majority believes that each person can decide what is right and what is true. Television and movies don't help with their portrayals of happy people blatantly living sinful lives. God tells us there is such thing as "sin".

God is perfect and holy. People are sinful. You probably already know that about yourself. Try being "perfect" for a day and you'll quickly find out you can't do it. Sin separates us from God. Sin means not understanding or caring about what is right. You defy God if you know what is right and then refuse to do it.

Who has sinned?

Romans 3:23 "For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's standard."

Romans 5:17 "For the sin of one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many."

The Bible says everyone has sinned. We're human, we can't help it. When Adam sinned back in the Garden of Eden, sin entered the human race and sinfulness is part of our human nature. You might be asking, "So what"?

What's so bad about sin?

Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death."

Isaiah 59:2 "It's your sins that have cut you off from God."

Sin leads to death. Big Problem! Because God is perfect, He cannot have anything to do with us because we are sinners. He wants to have a personal relationship with us but He can't because of our sin. So what did God do? He gave us His only son, Jesus Christ.

Why Jesus Christ?

John 14:6 "Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me."

So we learned that God can't have anything to do with us because of sin. Well, He decided to deal with our sin. Problem was, He had made it clear throughout the Old Testament that sin leads to death. In the Old Testament, people sacrificed animals as a way to show how sorry they were for their sins. And that was only temporary. God's plan all along was to send his son, Jesus Christ to live on this earth and be the perfect human being to be the final and ultimate sacrifice.

Why did Jesus have to die?

I Peter 3:18 "Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit."

Jesus died to take the penalty for our sins. He took our punishment so we wouldn't have to. Now, because of Jesus, the way is prepared for us to have the ability to have a personal relationship with a holy God. The fact of salvation means nothing unless a person accepts it for themselves.

Even if you grew up in church, you still need to accept Jesus personally. If you have led a terrible sinful life, no one is too bad for God. Someone doesn't have to "clean up their act" before coming to Christ. God wants all people to come to Him.

Confess Your Belief In Christ

Romans 10: 9-10 "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your hear that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your hear that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved."

You simply need to believe. That doesn't mean you don't have lots of questions or that you understand everything. It simply means you recognize you are a sinner and are in need of the Savior. You recognize that you cannot be good enough for a perfect God on your own. And the fact that God loves you so much that He sent Jesus to save you. If you believe that, say so...

Receiving Christ

John 1:12 "But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God."

You can express your belief and trust in Christ through prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God. He knows what you mean even when it is difficult to express. You can use your own words or repeat the following prayer...

"Dear God, I know that my sin has separated me from you. Thank you for Jesus Christ died in my place. I ask Jesus to forgive my sin and to come into my life. Please begin to direct my life. Thank you for giving me eternal life. In Jesus' name, Amen."

That's it! You are officially a member of God's family. You are my new brother or sister in Christ. Just as a baby isn't born and left to fend for himself, so a newborn believer in God's family needs some guidance. So you prayed the prayer...

Now what? - Grow, grow, grow...

If you have prayed for the Lord to forgive you and come into your heart, you have just made the most important decision of your life. As your brother in Christ, I will be glad to help you in your new walk with Jesus. I don't have all the answers, but will do my best with any questions you have or encourage you in any way. I'm only an email away.

What Jesus Has Done For Me

Praise God from whom all blessings flow...

I was raised in a Godly home. I knew about Jesus at an early age. When I was 13, I went to a Nicky Cruz crusade in our town. I heard how God had changed his life from a gang warrior to a God warrior. It touched my life and I asked Jesus into my heart that night. The next years I got involved at church and even preached a few messages with our youth group. But as I grew older, I moved away from the Lord. He never moved. It was me that moved away. I still went to church but did not live wholeheartedly for the Lord. In 2012, I found myself in a dark valley. I felt very alone. Darkness all around me. My job. My wife. Nothing was right in my life. I began to pray everyday for God to help. As he began to hear my prayers and lift me out of that valley, I felt closer to him than ever before. He fully restored my life. And now I serve him daily. I'm involved in the church and my family is too. When I was going through that valley, I thought it was the worst time in my life, now I see it was the greatest time in my life because God used it to get me back on the right path with Him. Again, I say I moved. God did not. He is our rock and our salvation.

Psalm 18: 1-3

1 I love You, Lord, my strength.

2 The Lord is my rock,

my fortress, and my deliverer,

my God, my mountain where I seek refuge,

my shield and the horn of my salvation,

my stronghold.

3 I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,

and I was saved from my enemies.

I was browsing some of the search results on squidoo relating to the Gospel and came across your page. Since there are so few out their who are really motivated to be a witness for Jesus Christ it is refreshing to see others who are as well.

You talk about sin, but you never explain what it is. How is someone supposed to repent from something that they don't know about? And from what I understand in Revelation 3:20 Jesus is no knocking on the door of a sinner's heart, but on the door of a church.

Check you my lens and tell me what you think: http://www.squidoo.com/The-Gospel-of-Jesus-Christ

      Hi JD,

I am only beginning to understand how valuable we are, and how much God truly loves and wants us! Too many people have been beaten up by religion, but we are finally beginning to recover, and trust that God really wants us to be his kids... (kids that are no longer afraid of Him!)

I'm heading off to read your lens for new and growing Christians.... I love the fact that you understand that new Christians are spiritual babies in a grown up body!!!!

      Keep up the great work,

You, have changed my life. I don't usually sit here and read like this but, you, you have made me feel something I have never felt before. God created me and he had his only won son and he sent him to die on the cross to save us. I ask god for forgiveness a lot. But, still, just because God forgives you doesn't mean you should go out and do whatever you want and sin whenever you want. A better person equals a better life and afterlife. Think wisely of what your future leads to. God will help you and lead you to the way even through rough times. I know he has lead me to being a way better person! I want to live my life and grasp all the things I can while I am on this earth (good things). God is truly everything that has ever happened to me. I thank him and Jesus for dying for me!

I'm torn between all the religions that says their religion is the right one. Now you're telling me that if I pick the wrong one I'm condemned? That would mean everyone needs to study hundreds and thousands of religions in order to make a decision. I'm willing to bet most do not do that.

I have done a lot of horrible things in life. Things ii don't knowthink if ii can everi forgive myselfyou for. But i have always believed in god and jesus and i hope and pray he can forgive me for those things i try to forgive myself for. There was times i did doubt the lord, but those times i was angry and upset. That time, i wasn't thinking that god has a plan for all. At that time, i was old enough to know that god don't decide for us but we decide our lives but i was stubborn. But i always accepted him in my heart and i ask him to forgive me for that doubt. Hes a wanderful person as to jesus. I love them with all my heart.

So true when you talk about not having to clean up your life before coming to Jesus. We can't ever live perfect lives or make ourselves good enough to be right with God. That's the whole point. Jesus did what we couldn't do...live a perfect life in our place. Then he took our sins upon himself and gave us His righteousness in return, and his Holy Spirit to help us live a life in thanks to Him. Wow. What an amazing, loving thing Jesus has done for all who would come to Him. Great lens. Blessed!

Wow, I can't even describe how lost I was before finding jesus, I was unhappy and completely miserable. I was to wraped up in the worldly things, and worried about not having this, or being that. Jesus always had his hand waiting there for me to grab, but sin kept me from taking it. A lot of what I have went through in life has pushed me closer to taking his hand. Lord knows that some of those bad situations that I've been through were blessing in disguise. Although I was always a believer in Christ, I was not walking with Christ, but now I am.

Beautiful lens and very well written. I came to know Christ as Savior in 3rd grade when a girl on the playground asked me the simple question, "Has Jesus saved you". I knew "about" Jesus, but at the time didn't have a personal relationship with Him. That evening I accepted Christ as my Savior by asking Him to save me from myself. He has been my redeemer since. Blessings~

I accepted Jesus into my heart and Lord of my life when I was 21, I was tired of living life my way. My husband accepted Christ just a few weeks later while he was working at a gas station, the night shift. He knelt behind the counter and accepted him right then and then and there. He called me at 3 in the morning to share the Good News, I am so glad we will be together in Heaven.

Thank you for liking my lense and blessing it! God saved me August 12th of 1990. I really was touched by your comment about properness and guidelines because sometimes when we are trying to follow all the guidelines, we need to realize Jesus is there and he loves us more than words can say.

I have struggled for a long time with my faith. I could not accept the lord into my life because I felt as though He had abandoned me. I felt that maybe I was "too full of sin" to be saved. However, recently, I have found Him again and He destroyed my walls. Now He is with me all of the time, but I'm not sure where to go from here. He hasn't yet guided me in the path He wishes me to take. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to further open myself to Him so that He will guide me to do as He wants me to do?

Great lens, I started my relationship with God with an idea that I needed to perform for some reason. Unconsciously working hard so as to earn more of his love. Studying the book of Romans then helped me to see the opposite. And now I am free. Its amazing to know this awesome God.

@anonymous: Hi Jeremy, I believe that finding other people around you that know God will help. I am sure that you have lots of questions right now. Find a Pastor and bombard him with your questions. Seeing other people that love God will encourage you to trust him more daily. A living church is generally designed to help.

I went to a church 10 years ago and told the pastor that this was my last hope, I accepted Jesus into my heart and my life changed. I have had hope and peace ever since, even through difficult times. I am so thankful He is in my life!

Its amazing how by praying and following Him a lot of other things will work out for you. I say this as my first lens is still at the top of the list and it is a poem about Him.

This was not entered as a add for my site but as a testimony for what He can do.

Jesus has been there the whole time. Even when I turned my back on Him and took up with Satan, Jesus was there, protecting me. I know now that He was teaching me what I needed to know to fulfill my purpose for being here, but those lessons were difficult. If your life is full of adversity, that is God trying to get you to a new place, a new frame of mind or He is making you stronger for what lies ahead of you on your journey through this life. This entire life on Earth is a test to see if you can be trusted with the riches of Heaven.

@anonymous: It's as easy as ABC to know you are saved. Admit, Believe, Confess. Being baptized does not save you. It's an outward show of an inward change. Get Jesus in your life as your Lord and Savior and the rest will fall into place.
