Edgar Cayce: An Introduction
History and Background America's Most Famous Psychic
So who is Edgar Cayce and how did he become America's most famous psychic?
Cayce was born on a farm in rural Kentucky, near the town of Beverly on March 18, 1877. When he was 16, his family moved to the town of Hopkinsville, Kentucky and Edgar attended school, completing a 9th grade education. He later worked as a clerk in a dry goods store and subsequently at a bookstore. This early period of Cayce's life was characterized by his working class family's financial struggles.
Cayce was a deeply religious man his entire life and belonged to The Disciples of Christ, a mainline protestant denomination, with roots in Kentucky. Within his church, Cayce taught Sunday school for children and always took on an active role in church affairs. Because of his Christian beliefs, Edgar later experienced inner turmoil with his astounding psychic abilities. He worried about the legitimacy of his revelations in view of religious teachings.
In 1900, while working with his father in an insurance business, Cayce developed a severe case of laryngitis and was unable to continue. This affliction and Cayce's pursuit of a cure, would ultimately result in the development of his incredible psychic gifts.
The Manifestation of Edgar Cayce's Psychic Abilities
Amazing Results of Hypnosis
In 1901, at the Hopkinsville Kentucky Opera House, a traveling stage hypnotist offered to try and assist Cayce in recovering his normal speaking voice. Edgar agreed to this public experiment and was successfully able to recover his voice publicly, while under hypnotic trance. After coming out of trance, Cayce again lost his voice, in spite of the hypnotist's post-hypnotic suggestion. This initial episode however, motivated Cayce to continue working with a local hypnotist who had volunteered to work with him.
In subsequent hypnotherapy sessions, Cayce was able to diagnose his chronic laryngitis as "psychological paralysis," a result of decreased blood flow to his larynx. He was then given hypnotic suggestions to correct the blood flow to his larynx, which reportedly resulted in his face and chest area turning bright red. After 20 minutes in this trance, Cayce is said to have then told his hypnotist, under trance, that his cure was complete. Afterward, and following several similar treatments while under hypnotic trance, he was cured of his chronic, debilitating laryngitis condition.
Edgar Cayce and his hypnotist, Al Layne, then began experimenting further with Cayce's diagnostic capabilities while in a state of hypnotic trance. They were amazed with the accuracy and results obtained. At this time, Al Layne was influenced in this work by French hypnotist, Marquis de Puységur, who was investigating the effectiveness of similar hypnotic cures and the boundaries of hypnotic suggestion. Cayce was reportedly so successful in diagnosing medical problems and effective cures for other people, while in a state of hypnotic trance, that Layne talked him into providing services to the public.
Edgar Cayce's Astonishing Psychic Gifts
The demonstrated powers of hypnotic trance
At the urging of his colleague and hypnotist, Al Layne, Cayce began to give trance medical assistance to the public free of charge. During this period, as well as the rest of his career, he relied on voluntary donations to continue his work full-time for those in need. He began to win widespread fame and notoriety for his healing success with clients. He continued with his trance work and it was soon discovered that he did not need to have a patient with him and could just as easily diagnose and prescribe a remedy, using only a letter from the person and a name and address. He was soon receiving treatment requests from all over the world by mail.
Cayce's work was reported by newspapers all over the world and he was soon hailed as "The Miracle Worker of Virginia Beach."
He was eventually persuaded to travel to Texas and to undertake trance work experimentally, in areas other than health care. He was called upon to make predictions for everything from cotton futures, to gold mine locations. Still refusing any type of payment for his work in spite of his economic need, he was largely unsuccessful in predicting outcomes for profit motives (no better than chance outcomes). Cayce, in an exhausted and reflective state of mind, moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1925, vowing never again to attempt any of his work except for those in need. It was during this period in Texas, that he also produced some of his most controversial and personally troubling revelations. These revelations concerned topics such as reincarnation, which led to criticism of his work from various Christian leaders and groups.
All of Edgar Cayce's work was undertaken while in a state of hypnotic trance and after 1923, most of his trance sessions were recorded. Initially Cayce worked with Al Layne as his hypnotist and later with both his wife and son in this role. He used the services of a full-time secretary, Gladys Davis, to record his sessions in shorthand. Many of his thousands of recorded sessions were saved in his archives and are still available and maintained by his Association for Research & Enlightenment. in Virginia Beach.
Cayce's Mature Period 1923-1945
Cayce Begins his Life's Work
Upon returning east to Virginia Beach, Cayce began his life's work in earnest. His hospital was established in 1929 through the patronage of one of his wealthy clients. During this period, his readings also began dealing increasingly with esoteric and occult themes.
In order to keep up with the requests and demand for his readings, Cayce worked tirelessly. He began doing 8 readings a day. His workload took it's toll on him leaving him fatigued and drained emotionally much of the time. Edgar Cayce died as a result of a stroke in 1945 and had prophesied this demise based on his strenuous workload and work habits.
Cayce's standard method of trance work (referred to as a "reading) was to lie down and enter a hypnotic trance state, with the help of an assistant (his wife or son at this point). He would then be asked a series of questions from whomever requested the reading, concerning a health, emotional or spiritual problem the requester was having. Cayce's responses to these questions would be recorded and relayed back to the client. Upon coming out of his trance, Cayce claimed to be completely unaware of his readings.
After 1923 these readings were recorded and maintained. There are approximately 14,000 preserved recordings remaining from the period between 1923 and 1945 and it is believed around 8,000 pre-1923 recordings are lost.

(A) That as has been promised through the prophets and the sages of old, the time - and half time - has been and is being fulfilled in this day and generation, and that soon there will again appear in the earth that one through whom many will be called to meet those that are preparing the way for His day in the earth. Portions of the now east coast of New York, or New York City itself, will in the main disappear."
Edgar Cayce's Prophecies and The End of the Mayan Calendar in 2012
Are we doomed to extinction or blessed with a rebirth?
As the year 2012 approaches many who respect the wisdom of ancient cultures will be attuned to current and future events, anticipating major changes in the world as we currently know it. Will we be swept away in a cataclysmic reign of destruction and apocalypse, or are we on the verge of a new age of understanding and growth?
What does the end of the current Mayan calendar actually mean? Many are reading into this event as an end time - but is it really?
What does Edgar Cayce's Association for Research & Enlightenment have to say about this event with respect to the teachings and prophesies of Edgar Cayce?
The current Mayan World Age ends in 2012, Mayan World Ages last 13 Baktuns (Mayan time measurement), or 5,125 of our years. At this point the Mayan time measurement is reset to "0" for the beginning of a new World Age measurement. The Mayan Age of Movement or Change will end on December 21, 2012, the winter solstice. This Mayan Age began on August 11, 3114 BC - think of all the change that has occurred in the world since 3114 BC!
A recent translation of Mayan text at Tortuguero, a Classic Maya site north of Palenque, explicitly points to the date December 21, 2012. It depicts creation lord Bolon Yokte as descending, evidence that the Mayans believed that 2012 would be the beginning of a new age, a recreation.
"As we can see, the end of the Mayan Calendar and the Age of Movement is simply the end of an Age. And, important to us, it marks the beginning of the next cycle of rebirth, renewal, and resurrection to even higher levels of enlightenment and understanding."
Mayan descendants maintain a tale of two more World Ages to follow after the Age of Movement/ Change ends on 12/21/2012. These ages are " The Age of the Spirit of All Living Things, followed by "Age of the Return to Oneness." There is much work yet to be done!
Caye believed that as change cycles come around again, we are nearing a time when the level of consciousness and relationship with the Creative Forces will allow us once again to regain lost powers. How many of us will catch this vision and raise our consciousness to contribute to a new age of enlightenment, may greatly determine what occurs in January 2013.
