Why is there a necessity to fight over religion

   Religion be it anywhere from Christianity to Wicca, Exists to define the enigmatic questions about humanity and the universe. That has been proven, are there any Deities that truly exist, who am I to say yes or no, but what has been proven is that religion exists to create peace of mind and to answer questions that cannot be answered by science as of yet.
   
   Devoutly religious or non-religious people seem to thing that it is necessary to fight wars, and in amongst them selves about which religion is right or wrong. My question is when will people take a step back and think about why they're actually fighting or arguing. Is it really to defend your religion. Or is it to defend your peace of mind, because you're scared that if they're right then the way you understand the universe will be false and then you'll have no idea what awaits you.
   
   If YOUR god is the only true god and no other deities exist, then where do you get the notion that it's your responsibility to punish and cast out people who don't believe what you do. Where do you get the notion that whatever there really is out there really gives a flying fuck about any of us. 
   
   Us as individuals and even as a whole world are so insignificant when it comes to the size of the universe, who are we to make judgements of each-other? In this and most other things. We should be working together as one collective, one people who agree to disagree. not bickering and moaning and killing each-other, about things that at the end of the day are WAY beyond us!
   
   so what do you guys think?

            True everyone has irrational beliefs and ideas however not everyone sees the need to push them onto everyone else. Only people who are unsure of themselves and people who are such Egotists that they think they are helping others by doing that do.

      Sorry, but religions don't answer any questions, especially any dealing with sciences.
      
      
      
      We can only work together as one if all religions were gone because it is the religions that prohibit us from working together as one.

         Indeed and there are a few religions which realize this and teach tolerance, Taoism and Buddhism are the ones that come to mind. Though one could argue that those aren't even really religions but philosophies.

      One of the primary problems with religion is the disturbing tendency to force a specific morality on everyone else, including people whose beliefs do not conform to those doing the compelling. Witness the law that permits pharmacists to refuse to dispense Plan B to women who need it. Moreover, in today's election cycle, every candidate and both major parties feel the need to toss God in the mix simply in order to placate that part of the electorate who won't vote for anyone who doesn't.       It's not a necessity to fight over religion, it's just when you have nothing better to do, religion makes for a good something to fight about, usually to relive the boredom; or fight over religion as an excuse to hide the fact that your really fighting over resources of one sort or another.

   The main purpose of most religious beliefs is to deal with the fear of mortality present in many of us. It makes a lot of people's life more bearable if they believe there is some kind of a life after death on this planet, where they'll be reunited with their departed siblings, etc. The irrationality of that very thought leads believers to insecurity. They do believe, but deep at heart, like anyone else they're not completely sure, so they would like everybody to share their beliefs. Look at the numbers of hubs on HP initiated by believers who ask atheists and agnostics to prove or disprove something regarding the existence of God. The fact of the matter is NOBODY has to prove or disprove ANYTHING. Anybody is free to believe what she or he wants. Period ! We can talk, and probably will debate about this until the end of times without coming up with a reasonable, constructive dialogue. Believers will try to sell you God, no matter what, and non believers won't give a hoot. Waste of time on both sides

      EXACTLY what I'm saying, why do we find the need to fight over something that is WAY above our comprehension, and something we may never know for sure when there are much better things to fight about! (not that I think fighting is a good thing)

   I don't think its necessary to fight over religion. Then again, I'm not religious. That being said, the majority of people walking down the street have done a good job at not fussing over their religion. I think it's safe to say that the only religion we hear about is the "fighting" because, let's face it...bad news sells.  Most people are kind and accepting, as most religions teach people to be. I can think of many examples of Hubbers here that are very vocal, yet accepting, regarding religious beliefs.
