"Drop your past  and live in the present" is a philosophy we often hear. Do you follow this?

You have to live in the present, look to the future and draw lessons from the past.

You can only live in the present; however, you live that life by what you have learned from the past.

you have no choice but to live in the present - the question is where are you haitually focussing?

To increase your ability to live in the present - focus in developing your sensory awareness of both external sight, hearing, touch, taste etc and internal sensations and awareness.

Sometimes it will be little difficult. But you have to do it, and only then you can go forward. So I follow this.

It's a fine idea, but no person is ever truly free of their past, so it's a practical impossibility to live that philosophy.

The prospect of dropping you pass may be entreating depending on the situations your are examining. For example, the life lessons that have led you to this point one should retain. They serve as building blocks of knowledge. We should not look at our past as failures but as  an event which led to a learning experience.
We should ask ourselves, what is the lesson being thought and for what situation will it be best suited.
Every life lesson has a corresponding event but we become so caught up in the manifestation that we fail to look at the reason.
We have to get ourselves into thinking cause and effect.

One writer said that a curse doesn't come without a cause. You might overhear some people saying that I will never forget what he did to me for he deceived me into thinking that he loved me yet all along I was just his toilet paper. Get over it!

The issue here was that one may be suffering from rejection because of some abusive behavior and hangs on to the pass seeking to find self justification.
The answer is to forgive the past, and then you will get understanding and wisdom for a brighter today and tomorrow. When the enemy hands you lemons, take ice, water,  sugar and make lemonade!

I live in the present but it is from my past that I have learned many things that make my present so much better. For some people that are living in the past their present may not be so nice and that is why they stay in the past.

It is impossible for anyone to live in the past. What has passed is past.

One can only live in today in the moment.

There is no such thing as the future, for once the future arrives, it becomes the present and in a second it is the past.

Good advice.  Move on and learn from your experiences be they good or bad.  Every day is the first day of the rest of your life.

Now or the present is the most powerful moment. You can do some things now, but not in your past. Do all what you need to do NOW.

You cannot can change your past, but you should look into the past to learn your lessons. For this reason only you should not forget your past.

No because you don't know where you are going unless you remember where you came from. Decisions, and things you went through in life determine what path your future will take. Either you live and learn from your mistakes and move forward, or stay stagnant worried about the past.

I think that is something most people strive for, and for a very few, achieve it, but for most of us it is a very difficult thing to do. What we are as people is the sum of our past experiences, both good and bad. I think that is something that is so ingrained in what it means to be alive that to not do it is to deny something our creator gave us.

Take a dog, for instance. Recently, I adopted a female toy poodle to be a companion for my male toy poodle because I am gone most of the day. A man must have abused that poor little dog to such a degree that she has a difficult time trusting that I am not going to do the same thing to her.

People are the same way. How many times have you had a negative experience with anything, and then been a little afraid of the same thing happening the next time you encountered whatever it was that gave you a bad time. It is a noble idea, but in reality is not something that can be done by most people.

Our past life is a bit like the proverbial 'Tar Baby.'   It sticks to us and just won't be dropped just because we might like to drop it.    We come out of a lifetime of habits, some good, some bad.   Being 'In the now' is something I endeavour to practice a little every day.  Been at it for years, yet still the past rises up in my mind as verbal discourse, pictures of past events, imaginary conversations with people I've met on previous occassions - this is all very normal stuff.   But it is HABIT.

If you want to live life in the present, you have to be aware of it moment-to-moment at EVERY moment.   You have to dedicate your life to it.  Unless you're willing to do this, the the next best is to be in the moment whenever it happens to occur to you.

Life is a journey. Keep moving and whatever that is that had happened should be forgotten.

I believe we learn alot from the past in general as well as our own personal past. So, no I don't live by this. However, If you're refering to forgiving someone , then yes it's always best to forgive but not forget. If you make a mistake, even a big one, learn from it. Let it make you stronger. Hope I answered your question.

It depends on context (situation and condition). If we have bad experience in the past, we could use it, but as Just Ask Susan says I live in the present but it is from my past that I have learned many things that make my present so much better. The case is how and when you see this statement.
