    Who Was Cain's Wife?

Who was Cain's wife and who was Cain talking about when he said "that every one that findeth him shall slay him"? Verse and scripture supported answers are best and please no inappropriate or obscene responses.

She's yet another reason why taking the book of Genesis (especially the first half of it) literally is a bad, bad idea. The Adam and Eve story and its spin-offs are allegories told by the ancient Hebrews as part of their folklore. They were meant to be more entertaining stories to tell around the fire after a hard day's work, and to impart a spiritual lesson rather than a historical one; the Garden of Eden story wasn't meant to imply Adam and Eve were real people, but rather the purpose was to teach children (or whoever may have been listening, who can say?) the importance of obeying God and taking his word seriously. It's folklore.

The story of Cain was possibly invented to explain why people of differing skin colors (a.k.a. non-Semites) existed, as the Mark of Cain is thought by Biblical scholars to be a lighter skin tone (a.k.a. Caucasians), and anyone bearing it would certainly stick out like a sore thumb among ancient Semites. As for Cain's wife and who she is, well, like I said, it's folklore--you don't ask too many questions about Paul Bunyan's giant blue cow, do you?--and so the mundane details aren't important. What is important to the story is the spiritual lesson that revenge is God's domain and his alone, and that everyone, even murderers, can feel the protection of God.

In short, trying to piece together a historical account of the first half of Genesis is futile, because it's a collection of folk tales passed down orally for thousands of years meant to teach important spiritual truths and life lessons. Cain's wife was just a construct in a story meant to give spiritual guidance, not historical details.

      You made some excellent points!
However untold millions or billions of people consider every story in the bible to be historical fact. Any logical questions lead to half baked "work-around" explanations or simply one choosing to believe period.

If you believe the bible there was only one family on earth. Therefore Cain's wife would have to have been his sister.
In fact for Adam and Eve to populate the planet there would have had to be a lot of inbreeding incest taking place!
The same thing would be true after Noah built the ark and the world was destroyed by water.
    1 Peter 3:20 (KJV)
"..... God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, (eight souls were saved) by water."
    According to Genesis 7:13 ,In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
Genesis 7:21-23: "All flesh died that moved upon the earth... and every man... Only Noah was left and those that were with him in the ark." Once again incest was used to repopulate the earth.
The other alternative is these are made up stories to give human beings answers to questions they've pondered along with dictating law and order.
It was easier to get people to go along with rules if they believed they came from a higher power. Religion was government!
God made man and man made religion.

Regarding the inbreeding, I've seen people say that dna/genetics in general were so perfect then there was no chance of mutation, but now with stuff like birth defects its a big no no morally.
      Bit of a weird stretch.

      And yet Deuteronomy 27:22  says:
"Cursed be he that lieth with his sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother."
Leviticus 18:6: None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness.

Norine, Odds are I know more about the bible than you do including how it was put together during canonization! You're entitled to take every story in the bible as literal historical fact. I'm stating if it's true Noah's family committed incest.

D: If God says "No" in Deut, He meant it! He is not man that He should lie! It's for us to "study" to find "truth" rather than assume. What does Adam mean in Hebrew? Gen 5:2 "called "THEIR" name Adam? Think!

"Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created." Sounds like he called both the male and the female Adam in this verse. It doesn't say he created multiple men & women in Garden.

D: There were TWO creations of man. One "created" other (Adam) "formed!" Sixth day v. 8th day! Study! He didn't call both Adam & Eve Adam. Contradicts scripture! Think!

One of the reasons there are so many different Christian denominations is because various sects disagree!
I don't believe there ever was a Garden of Eden, A tower of Babel, Noah's Ark, or Adam lived to be 930.
      These are fables & parables.

D:  Yes, the Word has "hidden messages" yet the point is, there is a "spiritual" man & a "natural" man! THE ADAM was the beginning of the "seed line" of Jesus; therefore, "formed" Spiritual!

If I remember correctly, it was said that when Cain was kicked out of the Garden of Eden, he went to the land of Nod where he found a wife.

Now, over the years, I have asked a number of people where was the land of Nod, and was it populated by other human beings? And I have not received a satisfactory answer yet.

I have a theory. I believe that the land of Nod was a place populated by a sub-human species, and Cain hooked up with one of them.

Nod means "wanderer" in Hebrew. "Some Bible scholars have suggested that Nod is not an actual place; rather, the Bible simply means that, wherever Cain went, it could be called the Land of the Wanderer."

Fee:  You're  right!  "Sub-human" if not in Christ's lineage!  The OT speaks mainly of Christ's lineage - the "Seed Line" although on 6th day, He created others. Doesn't matter "the place," if can't understand the Word of God - "Wanderer!"

Norine, Even if buy into god also created "other" humans which is no where in Genesis. You'd still have the issue of Noah & his family repopulating the world via incest after it was destroyed by water. In Genesis 7:21-23 only they survived.

D: Gen 1:26 others. 2:7 Adam (eighth day)! Noah: two of EVERY kind (all nationalities too) 6:19! The bible (creation) speaks of Christ's lineage mainly, not others. They're outside or "sub-human" as Fee says!

Norine, Most believers believe that God created the world and every living creature on it. The bible clearly states there were only 8 (people) who survived the flood and every other thing on the ark was an animal or plant. That's the literal.

Dash: Might by "literal" but not "scriptual!" Did God not created "man" on 6th day? Did He not form "Adam" on 8th day? Why did Gen 5:2 say "their" & "them?" Male & female called "Adam?" Their/Them refers to more than one man! 8 souls are "see

There's no 8th day of creation. Genesis 2:2 "And on the seventh day {God ended his work} which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made."  Some denominations alluded to an 8th day. I don't believe either!

D: So why did He "create" man 1:27 & yet "formed" Adam 2:7? 2:5 "There was not a "man" to till the ground" if finished? Yes, he had made ALL but THE MAN - Adam! Spiritual MAN was formed!

That's what I like about HubPages:  It makes you "study" Scripture for "truth" in His Word!

It's conincidental that my neice would ask the very same question less than a month ago.  She pointed out that in Genesis Chapter 1:26-27, God "created" man, both male and female on the sixth day; yet didn't "form" Adam until the eighth day Genesis Chapter 2:7 and "made" Eve in Verses 21-22.  Yet in I Corinthians 15:45 it speaks to Adam as "the first man!"  He was if considering the lineage of Christ!  Has anyone noticed this?

Reason being, in Gen 1:26-27 God "created" men of all nations on the sixth day (for all nationalities did not come from Adam and Eve), yet didn't "form" Adam until the eighth day.  God "formed" Adam for the lineage of Christ through the birth of Seth in Gen 5:3. which says "...and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth."

I also discovered that the word "beguiled" in Genesis 3:13 means "naga" which means "to lie with a woman" in Hebrew. Therefore, Abel was begotten by Adam and Cain begotten by Satan for they were fraternal twins (Gen 4:1-2.The word "again" in Verse 2 means "continued.").   .

The "name" of Cain's wife is not mentioned in Scripture, but from God's creation of mankind on the sixth day she was from one of the sixth day creations (Gen 1:26).

When Cain spoke the words "anyone that findeth me shall slay me" were pertaining to the unrighteousness that he had done and the curse that the Lord placed on him in Gen 4:11. Yet the Lord rains on the just as well as the unjust (Matt 5:45).  God set a "mark" (666) on Cain, but stated (v15) ",,,whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold..." Cain represents those of today in which "...from thy face shall I be hidden;..." those who cannot "see" truth in His Word as stated in Gen 4:14.

After "The Flood" (Noah and the Ark), Genesis 6:19 says "And of EVERY LIVING THING OF "ALL" FLESH, two of every sort shall thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female."  This is something that "religion" has not taught.  This is how the different nationalities continued.

Religion has also taught us that animals were taken aboard two by two but according to Genesis 7:2 it says "Of every "CLEAN" beast thou shalt take to the by SEVENS, the male and his female; and of beasts that "ARE NOT CLEAN" TWO BY TWO..."  God knew even then that sacrifice of "CLEAN" beasts would be necessary.
