The Islamic faith wants to kill people they feel are infidels and the christian faith preaches love
These are two very different faiths in terms of beliefs, for them to develop so differently could one or both be man made and not from God?
When I was just a little kid, 2 Christian evangelists told me my mom and dad were going to burn in hell for eternity. If this is love, then you can keep it
No, that was not love. They went about it the wrong way. There is more to it than that. Would you be open to hearing about it?
I've read the Bible clear through...twice. taken college course on eastern and western religion. Read baghavad Gita, zen, Buddha, two...I've made up my mind, thanks.
Lolita, I would be interested in discussing it.
I feel that you are jumping to a very bold conclusion. You can't take a small sample of extremist Muslims and use that to base your opinion. That would be like me taking the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church and claiming that all Christians act like that. As you can see, that isn't a very fair comparison.
I also urge you to look into Islam. I bet that you would find that the two have a lot of similarities.
On a side note, please don't take this as me bashing Christianity. For the most part, Christians today are are mostly peaceful; but in my experience, they are not one to preach love of everybody, just to love people with similar beliefs.
EXACTLY, Christians today are such a judgmental, anal retentive lot.
It is not a fair comparison, christians are not bombing innocent people. I know of the similarities and that is the question. How did they develop so differently?
Christians ARE bombing innocent people! What do you call the "war" in the Middle East? WE are dropping thousands of bombs on innocent people.
The Islamic religion per se DOESN'T preach killing so-called infidels. Yes, there were Muslims in Middle Ages who killed infidels who didn't believe as they did. However, only the extreme fundamentalist Muslims preach killing people who don't believe as they do.
Now, let's address Christianity. Christianity didn't preach love to those who didn't believe. Christians in the Middle Ages demonized, ostracized, & even marginalized those who didn't believe as they did. They marginalized Jews-categorizing them as Christ-killers & subjected them to heinous types of discrimination. They also demonized, even killed people they characterized as heretics. They furthermore burned those who were practitioners of Pagan religions, calling them "devil" worshippers.
As there are extreme fundamentalist Muslims who abhor anyone who isn't a Muslim, there are extreme fundamentalist Christians who more than abhor anyone who isn't a Christian. They are the ones who believe that THERE IS ONLY ONE way to God & condemning to hell those who have different ethical, spiritual, &/or religious beliefs. If the Islamic religion preaches hatred against the so-called infidel, the Christian religion preaches hatred against the so-called lost soul, reprobate mind, &/or sinner. This is the proverbial pot calling the kettle black.
The christian faith and Jesus went around seeking lost souls and sinners to save,.Their faith was brutal in the middle ages but they have developed and the islamic faith still kills with bombs. The question was about how the two developed differently
Islam--specifically, its extremists--is currently in that awkward Murder Everybody phase Christianity was in about 800 years ago. Naturally, as Islam got its footing roughly 800 years after Christianity did, I'd say they're about on-schedule.
I think everyone here has the correct answer. Let's see if Islam catches up with Christianity regarding taking over the world and eradicating native cultures.
Yoleen Lucas...the best answer thus far. Every word.
Both religions (like all religions) are man-made. There is a mountain of evidence for this that is available to anyone with an open mind, a halfway competent intellect, and the discipline to persevere in the search for truth.
"Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the [holy man] who represents God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged."
This is a violent religious verse about killing people who don't agree with the preaching of holy men.
"I will fill your mountains with the dead. Your hills, your valleys, and your streams will be filled with people slaughtered by the sword. I will make you desolate forever. Your cities will never be rebuilt. Then you will know that I am God."
Or this one.
"Make ready to slaughter [the infidel’s] sons for the guilt of their fathers; Lest they rise and posses the earth, and fill the breadth of the world with tyrants."
Or one more.
"If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you."
Wait... wait a second. These verses aren't from the Qu'ran. These are from the Bible!
The Bible is just as, if not more violent than the Qu'ran. Yes, both have peaceful verses, both have violent verses. It's all about picking and choosing the bits you happen to like. There's "something for everyone", so to speak.
They are in the bible, Jesus did not go around preaching to kill or death to non believers. Christians are not bombing and killing as believers. This question was not a judgement of wither faith but why they developed differently with similarities,
Soldiers were writing Bible verses on missiles before sending them at people...Dominionist Christians are many.
If you think Christianity isn't violent or never has been - you've not studied Christian History.
The Islamic extremists are merely where Christianity was in the fairly recent (in the scheme of things) past.
The Spanish Inquistion, The Crusades, etc etc etc. There are plenty of Christians encouraging others to kill gay people (American Christians are encouraging the Ugandan lawmakers to enact this into law, and many a pastor in the states is encouraging that gay should be rounded up and killed).
Read the Bible - how many people are stoned to death for minor infractions like stealing or pre-marital sex, yet encouraged to marry their victim if they have raped them....
All Holy Books have issues with violence. Islamist extremists are just were Christianity was a while back.
The Christian Bible, The Quran and all other religious books can be edited to how the rich want different parts of the World to live.
These books go through exactly the same publishing process as a fairy tale book such as Jack And The Beanstalk.
This means they can be proof-read, edited, illustrated in any manner the copyright owners of these books want them to be before heading off to the printers.
They see conflicts as a massive money spinner and they use these books to kickstart conflicts.
The countries that christian countries invade and destroy are countries that one family have influence over. That family have influence because they own such countries National banks. Governments are in so much debt to this family that they have to do what that family says else face having their countries economy virtually wiped out.
So if that family who do not/did not own the national banks in areas like the middle east say, go to war destroy their land then take over their national banks or create them a national bank else we will bring your country to a halt, then them countries have no choice but to do that.
What we all seem to be forgetting is, this war started over and attack on the World Trade Centre, world trade is greed, so in effect this war was started because the middle east do not want greed on their continent, it did not start over an attack on a Church, it started over an attack on greed.
However, most of us seem to have forgot that and replaced it with this is a war over books that have been published and edited by someone very rich. You will probably find the people that control the wording of the bible are sister companies or something to those that control the wording of the Quran.
We have allowed the media to convince us that this is a war over believes when it is war over greed, that is played straight into this one family's hands, because why we have all believed this is a battle of evil religion/some groups are evil from this religion, this family have taken over the National bank of Iraq and Afghanistan, now we are moving on to getting Syria's.
This family also took over Libya's national bank.
It seems that so called bad people have the finger pointed at them in areas where this certain family do not own the national bank, which to me sounds like they point the finger to blind us all to thinking a good reason for war is granted.
It seems they need access to such countries so point the finger. Hence a Cyber War has been setup, sony
This family do not own the bank of North Korea either, in fact they do not know much about North Korea as North Korea have shut them selve off.
There are some really outstanding answers to your question here, Vince! I cannot add much to what has already been offered, but do wonder if, in some measure, your question is not influenced by the Islamic extremists that have dominated the media for well nigh 30 years. You certainly would not be alone in any anxiety you feel over world affairs, but the bigger Hydra may be the media, itself.
The reality is that Islam and Christianity have not developed differently at all. Both remain convinced of their doctrinal infallibility and both hold the doctrine of proselytizing the faith. This has not changed. What has changed is that there no longer exists the State of Christendom, while the Islamic State remains to hold its own geographic power.
It would be naïve, however, to think there are no stray threads of conflict remaining with Christianity. Look at Northern Ireland. Granted, Catholic v. Protestant is by no means the sole factor in that conflict, but it is representative of the larger political and historical landscape in those counties. The psychological toll, alone, has been devastating to everyone living there.
Then, you have Israel, a democracy within a Jewish State, and it does not take kindly to infringement on what it feels is its due, both politically and within a religious context. The bloodshed has been and remains beyond horrific. Judaism is the oldest of the three Abrahamic religions, does not proselytize, but is no less prompted to insist on its God-given borders.
I think it would be further naïve to believe that if Christianity remained a state sponsored religion, there wouldn't be blood-shed. Even now there are pockets of physical and psychological violence in the United States instigated by factions within the many tiers of the Christian faith system.
Nothing has changed. It's only been contained by secularism. Thank the Powers that Be.
Actually Christianity, Islam, and Jewish faith, all teaches that one should kill none believers, this is even within the old testimate, saying any person who refuse to worship the god of Israel or also worship other gods must be put to death. Prior to age of enlightment, Christian also execute anybody in Europe that is not a Christians and even earlier kill anybody who isn't a Catholic and kill educated that contradict the bible, the version of Christianity that is follow by Europeans after the Age of Enlightment, is so call "New Christianity", which is a reformed version of the religion that no longer follow some of the more problematic teaching of the bible, some churches, even removed certain passages from their bible.

You guys - I posted this in the Questions section, but because it turned into a full-blown discussion, HubPagers advised me to move it to Forums. Here it is:"Cult" is defined as a system of beliefs that doesn't work, but people cling to it because they fear "eternal hell"...

Where does someone like me, with psychic ability, fit into Christianity? Do you think I am evil?I believe in God & Jesus & God's Holy Spirit. But I was born psychic. I see dead people and I talk to dead people. It is a God-given ability. I help people. Yet I cannot label myself as...

Listen, I'm more than willing to accept the fact that religion plays a large part in peoples lives, I get it, but you people (and Christians, I'm looking at you here) have got to come at me with something better than cliche biblical quotes. The bible is the biggest, most perverse, most destructive...

If Jesus never wrote anything why is the New Testament the basis of Christianity? If Paul wrote 2/3 of the New Testament is Christianity not a Pauline invention since Jesus wrote none of it?
