Why are ATHEISTS so obsessed with Theology?

Everyone knows that an atheist is a person that does not believe in God.  So if an atheist does not believe in God, why would he ask about evidence for God?  Why would an atheist be concerned about what type of evidence a Christian might use in a theological discussion?  Why would an atheist want to be involved in a theological discussion at all?

To show to believers the nonsense they claim to believe.
So they can identify the irrationality of the theology. Why else?
To dispel gullibility and stupidity for what it is and hopefully wake up some of those who spend their lives living in that state of mind.

Btw- I'm not an atheist. lol

You mean, we actually have a choice? I'm pretty sure Evangelists and Fundamentalists haven't stop pushing their religions on everyone, but if they ever did stop, there would be no need for an atheist to be involved.

Most Atheists that I know do not fire until being fired at.

Then again, a lot of Christians I know are like that too.

Funny how loud a minority could be.

"So if an atheist does not believe in God, why would he ask about evidence for God?"

      lol

Did you put any thought into this question? Yes, why on Earth would a skeptical person ever ask for evidence of something that other people claim to be real? I mean do we expect scientists to ask for evidence of the loch ness monster? NAH, of course not. Do we expect skeptics to demand evidence for ghosts even though they don't believe?

Could it be that skeptical individuals try their best to base their beliefs on evidence? Could it be that things which are supported by solid evidence are more likely to be true?

"Why would an atheist be concerned about what type of evidence a Christian might use in a theological discussion?"

Hmm... let's consider this for more than the zero seconds worth of thought you put into it. Perhaps many atheists are concerned about what is actually true and thus if Christians offer questionable evidence it might be best to, ya know, question it.

"Why would an atheist want to be involved in a theological discussion at all?"

Once again a question easily answered. Most atheists used to be believers and, as I stated above, many are concerned with the truth. As someone who managed to escape fundamentalist religion it'd be kind of cold-hearted not to help others do the same. Religion does a great deal of harm and very little good, it gives horrible moral advice and makes a lot of unproved claims, if you can't see reasons to argue against it you just aren't thinking about it.

To dig into the mind of the believer and try to understand how they think; what makes them behave so peculiarly.

It is a strange and foreign world, one filled with emotion and faith without evidence.  One that does not require reason or thought to proclaim Truth and Fact.  One where the desire for something means it is so.

Well, I don't think I can help most of you with your problem, except for maybe "wilderness".  So, is it understanding that you are after?  Probably will not find it on HubPages.  If it is understanding of the religious mind that one is after, I would suggest books by William James, very famous for his study of the psychology of religious experience and mysticism.

A new hubber made a post recently that really says it all. What he said is exactly how I feel. I will re-post here. If there is any sane argument against it, I would really like to hear it. This is not a debate. I so totally, utterly agree with the part I have taken the liberty of underlining. To all those that believe: GIVE ME SOMETHING!

“Dave, if you have any proof that God does exist, I sincerely would love to know what it is, as I too would like such a belief, as it would be a comfort.  As the claim that God exists is a  most extraordinary one, it will require extraordinary proof, and it is not upon the doubter to disprove a belief, but upon the believer to prove it.  If a claim is made without any empirical evidence, it can just as easily be dismissed without it.  If you, unlike the rest of humanity really do have evidence that God exists, then it is your duty to present it to others, because such knowledge would be a great comfort and hope for all, even to atheists, who secretly would be overjoyed to discover they are wrong, and that there really is someone to answer our prayers.”

Atheist must believe in God..how do you obsess about something that doesn't exist??? You are acknowledging God while you debate him..God is just fine with that..It's us humans who Judge and scorn those for different views on GOD..God doesn't care either way. If you want proof of God..just simply look for it. It's disguised in nature.  Scientist did not invent nature..did they? The trees, oceans, sky, the air you breath..scientist can only speculate why it exist and come to conclusions, theories and hypothesis..just like when you all debate over God..Ironically..This is so God; how you argue over his existence is God at work.  some want a spook in the sky, some want evidence like "big foot"lol..You must be willing to Receive TRUTH..only then can you see proof. "beware of those whose God is in the skies" 1

Easy, because there are too many other people making the claim it does exist. Delusions must be addressed, just as much as irrational thinking.
      Untrue
And you know the mind of the god you worship? roll Please seek help immediately, not only for your sake, but the sake of those around you.
Judge? Yes, I judge actions, as it is my right to do. Scorn? That's subjective.
      What god?
Don't need or want proof of your god. It's already known to not exist, except in your own mind.
Why look for something that is non-existent? Makes no sense.
      Untrue.
      No one said scientists did.
This is HOW humankind explains the world we live in.
I don't debate the topic. I only point out the irrationality of the idea/concept.
      What god?

What makes you think scientists ever speculate (other than for entertainment) as to why everything exists.  That is the domain of religion, which answers it quite easily with the postulation of a second entire universe that we can't detect and that is populated by a species of creature that exists outside of time and is omniscient, omnipotent, and demands obeisance, adoration and love of the sub-God, antlike creatures it created as future companions.  A third complete universe seems necessary as well to contain the private torture chamber we call Hell, but that is not defined very well.

Some nonbelievers like to discuss theology in an attempt to broaden their horizons and learn more about how others of faith believe.  Some that are religious like to discuss theology for the same purposes.

I love calm rational discussions on theology.  I find the entire subject fascinating and I like running into new ideas.  Sometimes I even find out something new about myself or *gasp* change my viewpoints based on those discussions.

People do that sometimes you know.  They have conversations about other beliefs and actually learn something.

Personally, I was more and more sure I didn't believe in a god or gods BECAUSE I studied theology/religion. The more I learned and read for myself, the more convinced I became that it was all superstition and myth. So, I learned a lot of stuff along the way and still find it fascinating and continue to learn. Today, I am amazed as I watch the number of ways that apologists can find to explain away the unsavory parts of the bible or other books.

Because I am continually challenged on my atheism, I feel I need to be knowledgeable on the subject of religion.

Hope that helps and answers the original question.

    Atheists ! are very much like doting mothers with adult children ! . Always critisizing what they don't believe that is right   , and yet have no business in anyway.!!??  These forums are ripe with non-believers who not only will ask questions of proof of God for no apparent  reason but then critisize the answers of the faithfull with a embittered hypocracy ! :-}

Believers ,believe not only in rationality but also in Faith , Cags , meaning ;if you don't have faith then your not rational ! But anser te question ! What are those like yourself ALWAYS doing minding the business of ........Of what you dont believe in ????

    1. Cagsil profile image72
Cagsilposted 12 years agoin reply to this

The KIND of faith believers claim to have isn't rational. Which is the point you don't get.
Because, HP is a writer's community and if it wasn't for the ignorance of believers, then the religion forums would be an empty lot. You would be lucky if the religious forums even had posters.

Believers continue to open thread after thread, calling out those who don't believe and the Atheist continue to call out the believers, attempting to reason with them.

Now, if both sides concentrated on writing more often than showing off their ignorance, then HP would have a lot more hubs published and the religion forums wouldn't have redundant threads on the same pathetic topics time and time again.

      So please.

Atheists would have little interest in discussing theology, if it weren't for the fact that the theists often make it their business to try and convert the non-believers, and feel that they have a God-given right to dictate how everyone should live their lives.  It is the need to impose their view of morality onto others, that makes many atheists feel it necessary to counter the arguments of the religious believer.

It is for this reason, that a recent study discovered that atheists often know a great deal more about religion that those who claim to follow it.  I have often quoted the Bible to Christians, only for them to stare at me blankly, because they may know little about the Bible themselves.

I'm sure there are plenty of reason. None which are described by your bias view.

In an environment where intellectuals, educated and opinionated persons debate logically, it always surprises me how a decent discussion on God with atheists, which starts off nicely, always ends up with the atheist resorting to ridicule the opponent who has to defend himself by doing the same. Hence, the whole point of the debate is utterly lost.

Why does this happen? And the atheist's ridicule mostly remarks upon the opponent's "insufficient" intellect, poor grammar, lack of knowledge, ignorance, delusion, inability to support rational ideas etc. and ultimately blames the objective (and place) of the debate itself.
The opponent's (theist) accusations are similar as well.

Atheism is a belief...no matter how one puts it. It's not just an intellectual refutational stance. Do they realize it that when mocking anyone who happens to believe in God, atheists often sound much like the people they claim to despise the most: religious fundamentalists? Because they use the same tactics.

They claim that they haven't yet been given an evidence (for God's existence) that's compelling enough...but have they produced a convincing enough evidence against God's existence? It is a circle of endless indictment.
