Ghost Hunting Equipment

Updated on April 8, 2012

What Equipment Will I Need?

Ghost hunting has been a hobby of mine for a long time. Here is a list of items I have found helpful on my investigations. You don't always have to buy the most expensive equipment, although it's fun and does catch some interesting stuff, but just even a hand held recorder and basic camera can catch a lot. So you can just start with a couple items and build your collection over time.

EMF Detector

Using an EMF detector helps you to find the baseline reading of a room in a house. Spirits are said to give off energy that these detectors can read. Before you start an investigation it is wise to do a thermal sweep through the house to make sure there aren't any "hot" spots. Or areas where wires or any electronic equipment are putting off a lot of energy that might be confused with paranormal activity.

Another way to use this device is to ask questions and try to directly communicate with the spirits. Ask them to light up the device when you are asking questions.

Digital Cameras

Just plain regular cameras are great for catching orbs. Most phones also have video and many have night vision on them also. Always take plenty of pictures to try to catch something you may not see with the naked eye.

Video Recorder

Video Recorders are used for visual and audio surveillance. You can set them up and leave them running all night. Try to get one that has infrared capability or night vision. They are also nice to use when you are walking around in the complete dark. You can see somewhat where you are going and keep an eye on the screen to note if you see anything out of the ordinary.

Hand Held Voice Recorders

Thermal Scanner- Infrared non contact thermometers are a great instrument to have. When used on an investigation this will aid as a detection system for spirit presence. Rapid temperature drop of 10 degrees of more could indicate spirit presence. These recorders are good for a number of reasons. They are good for catching EVPS (electronic voice phenomena). Many times you cannot hear anything with your naked ear but when you listen to a recorder played back, you will hear a voice answering your questions or speaking randomly that was not heard by anyone in the moment. This is one of the ghost hunters favorite tools for catching paranormal activity.

They are also nice for documenting the happenings through the night. for example, you can speak into the recorder saying, the room got cold at 10:30 pm. Or so and so sneezed at 2am and dog barked at 2:15. This way you don't have to rely on your memory when you are reviewing footage later.

Thermal Scanners

Thermal Scanners are Infrared non contact thermometers. You can scan a room and see the temperature throughout the room. If you see a big temperature difference in one spot it may mean there could be a spiritual presence. You may want to practice ahead a time to learn the difference of an animal, or a spot someone was just sitting in. It is a really fun instrument to play around with and get the feeling of.

Ghost Boxes

One of the best ways to communicate with spirit is using a ghost box. The recorder will scan quickly through radio waves. You will only hear quick little "bleeps." Until a spirit tries to communicate. You will then hear a word or two. These are amazing. They use the radio waves to be able to answer you questions.

Interesting stuff. I don't plan to hunt any, but I know where to come if I ever do.
