Character Is Destiny

Updated on November 6, 2015

The most important thing about a man is his outlook of life or what one may call ‘philosophy of life’. Based on this fact everybody has the philosophy; even a farmer has the philosophy. Outlook begets into acts and if a man acts habitually in a certain way it would be determined as his ‘character’.

What is character; one dictionary defines character as “the complex of mental and ethical traits marking a person.” In another dictionary, character is said to be “the stable and distinctive qualities built into an individual’s life which determine his or her response regardless of circumstances.”

There is no one single definition of Character but on broader terms it is what one does voluntarily- the acts of will of one kind or the other. it is the habitual dominance, not the accidental dominance of a certain universe of desire; thus what one does good or bad momentarily, temporarily in a particular situation is not and cannot said to be one’s character, rather it is the established continues and dominant outlook of habitual actions.

Character As Destiny

Character ultimately becomes man’s nature; it may be partly his novel nature that he has acquired biologically and partly that he has garnered through his environs. It is ultimately habits that form man’s character. Some had said, ‘sow and act and reap and habit, sow a habit and reap a character, and sow a character reap a destiny’. It can be drawn thus the character ultimately becomes destiny that one finds difficult to escape. A great Greek philosopher HERACLITUS, who gave his landmark theory of change being central to the universe, characterized ‘character as destiny’.

Why Character Is Destiny

What is the role of character in person's life; and how come it can be so central to one's life that all other things are ignore, or have negligible influence on one's life. Well, advocates of such school of thought would overly attest to this viewpoint. To them, life's quality is not dependent upon what is inherited from parents in terms of genetics or good fortunes; neither is it reliant on one's physical environment that one has had, or on personality and social position. Rather, beauty of life intrinsically is based on personal character, which if worked upon accordingly can give birth to a destiny. It is in a way a self help process of guiding oneself to success, and of molding a soul to lead perhaps a simple but rich life by enshrining richness into life.

One of the greatest philosophers of all times: Plato once remarked that: 'Life is not worth living if the soul is hurt, rather a good life has to valued - a just and honorable one". Soul was a central theme of Plato's philosophy and every other thing revolved around a soul. It is soul of the person which is so shaped that destiny is manufactured. The people who have passed this test of cleansing their souls from diseases of selfishness, greed, lust of power and money and materialism are likely to become role model for their loved ones and for larger humanity. Such immaculate souls are less likely to blame their surroundings and people within; in fact they persevere to make things good for fellow human beings, and in turn are likely to be blessed.

Each day we are faced with important questions; that are so crucial to our lives, and if we happen to take wrong path. Perhaps, we are doomed for a life, thus, it is imperative to take right choices to enrich our lives. That is only possible through hard earned personal character, which ultimately becomes destiny.

"Character is Destiny" - David Brooks

Circumstances and Character

There is so interplay of circumstances and character, each modifying each; if the circumstances dominate character; one is likely to have what it can be called a weak character and the person is said to have a weak character and sometimes no character at all; but if character dominates circumstances; one is definite to succeed while the person is said to have strong character or simply one who has the character.

Therefore once the character is established, circumstances assume secondary role and man builds and shapes his destiny. Nothing would then impair character after it has been fully established, while everything seems to have a method and a well known reason behind what one does or doesn’t. Character is what one is inside and outside; in dark and light; in day and light- there is no duality and duplicity in ones demeanor.

Abraham Lincoln said, “Reputation is the shadow. Character is the tree.” Our character is not just what we try to display for others to see, it is who we are even when no one is watching. Good character is doing the right thing because it is right to do what is right.

Thanks for the comments are right in today's time morality has been the ultimate casualty for reasons you enumerated. However universal truth would never be refuted in any time..

This hub is finely written, well-composed, and thoughtful. It sounds like you have grasped the essentials very well. Strangely, and perhaps unfortunately, "character" (moral character) sounds almost out of place in today's pragmatic, materialistic and technology driven world. Hopefully, it is as relevant as ever.
