Angels and Demons: Fantasy or Reality?
Where can we get real answers from?
Angels and Demons, we have heard a lot about them. Are they some kind of fantasy or reality? Who created them? Can they affect our lives? Do they have a positive or negative effect on us? To truly understand these spiritual beings in heaven, we need to go through few verses from the Bible. For better understanding, I personally encourage each one of you to open the verses I have mentioned below in your own Bibles. If you don't have a Bible, I have written the verses in the article.
Who are angels and how they came into being?
a) Angels are invisible, kind spirit creatures created by God even before he created mankind. In Hebrew, it's “malakh” and in Greek “Angelos” and both these words mean "messenger". In Job 1:6, the angels are referred to as “sons of God.” Below written verse proves that angels are truly "sons of God."
"Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them." (Job1:6)
b) God created angels before humans came into being. We can understand this from the below verses.
"Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge?Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?" (Job38:1-7)
How many angels are there in heaven?
Angels have been mentioned around 400 times in the Bible. The number of angels in heaven counts to more than a hundred million. The verse below explains how many angels exist in heaven.
"A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened." (Daniel7:10)
Do angels have names?
From the Bible, we know that all angels have personal names. If we pay close attention to verse below we can understand that God gave names to angels. For example: Angel Gabriel, Archangel Michael.
"And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth" (Luke1:26)
Why did God create them? For what purpose?
All angels have different roles to play. For instance, they protect God's loyal servants on earth, convey God's messages, enforce God's judgements. The verse below explains how an angel of God came down on earth and killed Assyrian men for being disobedient and harming God's people.
"And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses." (2Kings19:35)
Psalm34:7 explains that angel of God always protect people who are faithful and loyal to him.
"The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him and delivereth them." (Psalm34:7)
Should we pray to angels?
Angels do not want us to worship them instead they ask us to worship the one and only true God. From the scriptures, we understand that God wants exclusive devotion from us. The verse below explains that God wants our complete dedication.
"Thou shalt have no other gods before me.Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me" (Exodus20:3-5)
In Matthew 6:9, Jesus taught us how to pray. He also taught us to pray to only one God who is in heaven.
"After this manner, therefore, pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. " (Matthew6:9)
In the verse below, we see that Apostle Paul fell at the angel’s feet to worship him but the angel told him not to pray to him but to worship God.
"And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." (Revelations19:10)
Who are demons and how they came into being?
Demons are invisible, wicked spirit creatures. They were angels before and were not created wicked. They decided to rebel against the God who created them and disobey him. From the verse below, we understand that Devils also believe there is one God.
"Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." (James 2:19)
Who is Satan?
To understand how an angel became Satan, let's go back to the history of mankind. In the Garden of Eden, with the creation of Adam and Eve, one of the angels of God became rebellious and he tempted Adam and Eve into committing sin because he wanted their obedience and their worship directed towards him. The verse below explains what happened in the Garden of Eden.
"Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye, shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat." (Genesis3:1-6)
How did few angels disobey God?
There is another proof in the Bible of few angels becoming disobedient to God. During Noah’s time, angels started taking special interest in women on earth and they decided to take wives for themselves. Their union was unnatural and unacceptable in eyes of God. The verse below explains this situation.
"That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."(Genesis6:2-4)
Thus, these angels rebelled against God and joined with Satan.
How do demons affect us?
For many reasons, these demons do everything possible to deceive mankind and tempt us to commit sins. They are able to do so because they are powerful spirit creatures. If we are not ignorant and understand Satan's way of misleading mankind we would never let him take advantage of us.
"Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices."(2cor2:11)
Some of the ways demons deceive us are through demonism. Either they do it directly or through other people. Another trick is by tempting us to use supernatural powers to see the future. The Bible talks about demons and fortune tellers working together. Another trick is talking with the dead, people might think they are talking to a loved one who died but instead it's the demon who is misleading us. We should not become prey to demons but instead do everything in our power to stay loyal to our God who is worthy of our glory, honour and worship.
Below are the things mentioned in the Bible that are considered to be the distractions devils use so that we turn away from God.
"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God." (Galatians5:19-21)
We should very well understand that once we have lost a loved one we cannot in anyway communicate with them. The verse below explains it. They are silent in the grave. What we have is the hope to see them when God will resurrect people.
"The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into silence" (psalm115:17)
What can we do the protect ourselves from the demons?
There are ways we humans can defend ourselves from these wicked spirits. It's reading the God's word the Bible which can help us understand the difference between right and wrong. A prayer is a powerful tool and each one of us has the privilege to talk to our creator personally and tell all our concerns and worries. God is always ready to help us, just we need to ask him. We need to develop qualities of a true Christian, not just in words but in action.
The verse below explains that we cannot serve God and devil at once. We can only serve God or Satan.
"Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils." (2corinthians10:21)
Without faith, we cannot please God. We should have faith and show it at all times. Take a look at verse below to understand this point.
"And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." (Matthew17:20)
The two below verses explain that if we pray to God for help, he will always help his loyal servants.
"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all holy ones" (Ephesians6:18)
"He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry and will save them." (psalm145:19)
What will happen to Satan and his demons in Armageddon?
In Armageddon, Jesus with his angels will destroy the wicked system and Satan will be chained and thrown into Abyss where he will be imprisoned for 1000 years, after which he will be released for some time before being completely destroyed.
"And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years. And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever." (Revelations20:1-10)
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever." (Revelations20:1-10)
Should we be scared of Satan and demons?
No, because if we are loyal to God he will never let the demons harm us. God has done that before, he will do it now. The two verses below explains that all the demons will be destroyed on the judgement day.
"The angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day."(jude6)
"The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished" (2peter2:9)
Angels and demons are real and angels do protect God’s loyal servants and demons do everything to mislead us so let us be careful not to fall into temptations and serve our God with our whole heart, mind and soul because God is the only one who is worthy of our worship, because he created us and always wants the best for us and that's the reason he gave us his holy book the Bible. He wants us to keep knowing him and he wants us to draw closer to him.
