God Does Not Change James 1:16-18

Susan loves the Lord. She seeks to walk close to him by studying the word of God. His word holds all the answers to life's questions.

I Change Not

God Does Not Change

Welcome back to Life Lessons from the Book of James.

This verse by verse study is designed to provide tools to look closely and intently into God's word which are preserved for us in the Bible.

Today let's park our minds on just three verses; James 1:16-18. In these verses, we learn God does not change. He never changes, He is unchangeable. What does that mean to you and me?

If you would like a pattern of Bible study, see this simple study pattern utilized in this Bible Study, Life Lessons from the Book of James.

As we look closely at just a few verses at a time, we will uncover truths that have the power to change us.

Before you study always pray for the Holy Spirit to interpret and to communicate the heart of God to you. His word is a lamp to your feet.

"Father God, we love you and we thank you that you have called us to be your children. Thank for your precious word which builds us up, instructs and trains us. Your word is life! Lord, as we dig into the book of James I pray you will open the eyes of our hearts and speak truth. We love you Lord and praise you for ALL you have given us. In Jesus Name, Amen."

Review - When Tempted

In the three previous verses, we uncovered the strong tie between

God never tempts anyone to do evil. He is God and He is HOLY and pure which is the antithesis of evil.

So what was the tie between temptation and sin? The tie between temptation and sin is us. The responsibility falls directly on our laps. Sin happens when we give in to temptation and when we weaken to our fleshly and sinful desires. If we linger or contemplate temptation it will lead us headlong, smack dab into sin.

WHAT TO DO: Be Prepared - Knowing that God provides a way of Escape - Go to HIM knowing He is in control and won't allow the temptation to be more than you can handle.

1 Corinthians 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

Never Changing

Unlike His creation, God Never Changes.

Reference Verse: Malachi 3:6 "I am the LORD, and I do not change."

James One 16-18 "So don't be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God above, who created all heaven's lights. Unlike them, he never changes or casts shifting shadows. In his goodness, he chose to make us his own children by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his choice possession."

Deception | Source

Do Not Be Misled

JAMES 1:16 "So don't be misled, my dear brothers and sisters"

Note: James addresses them with words of endearment as he charges them by saying: Do not be mislead

The first word in this verse (so) is there to tell us to look back at what was said previously, basically - the sin nature is ever on our back.

James is telling his dear brothers and sisters not to be misled. We might be misled by thinking the temptation is coming from God. Do not be mislead - God cannot sin. Remember God is never tempted to do wrong and He never tempts you to do wrong either.

Commentary - (my thoughts): When hit by temptation all reason flies out the door. Knowing that our sin nature 'the natural response' is to react without thinking let us be prepared and NOT be mislead.

When temptation hits have a plan:

  • Be alert - "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." I Peter 5:8
  • Remember - Temptation is not from God. If I 'remember' I will be prepared to call myself out and bring myself to the cross submitting to God's best for me. Though the pull of sin, is strong and a very real happening it is vital to 'remember' and understand God does not tempt me.

Think about this, when we blame God for tempting us, it is blasphemy. It is basically saying that God, who is Holy and Pure, is not only capable of evil but he inflicts it on you. Evil is the direct opposite of who He is.

God is Holy. Holiness is the fabric of who God is. It is ludicrous to think that the who has NO sin or evil in Him would tempt his children with evil.

He never Changes

James 1:17 "Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow."

As if to give further proof of the incomprehensible thought that God would tempt people with evil, James explains that anything GOOD and anything PERFECT comes from Father God. You know the creator of all, He never ever changes or even shifts, like the stars that twinkle and the moon that casts shadows - He remains the SAME. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13:8

Commentary (My thoughts)

He is the rock who cannot be moved. When all the world has gone wrong - God does not change. He is the anchor that holds through the storms of life. He is the foundation that keeps our life from crumbling. He is the great I AM!

When something good or perfect comes to me - let there be NO question who the author and gift giver is. It is good to give thanks to the Lord. He is worthy of our praise and honor.

In a life filled with temptation, changes and confusing twists and turns - He never changes. Let that fact be the security we run to and depend upon.

Jesus The Same by Hillsong

God Chose Us

James 1:18 "He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession."

It was His choice to grant us a new birth, a new beginning, an offer to be part of His family. Through His word (Jesus) we became his children.

He chose us out of all that he created and He calls us His prized possession. When assaulted with shame, defeat, inadequacy, inferiority, call it out and speak loudly. Out of ALL creation, we became his prized possession. You are a child of the King .. and he prizes you as his chosen possession.

We are called to live in victory and to shine in a world that has no hope. Live life on purpose for the purpose of bringing God glory.

"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. " Ephesians 2:10

Hello My Name Is ... Please Watch Powerful!

Praise The One Who Chose YOU

Whatever lies you have been fed by those around you or by your own assessment of who you are, stop right where you are and listen to what Father God says about you.

In order to defeat the world's messages (you're not good enough or you are just a speck in the sea of humanity or who do you think you are?), Challenge the lies with the truth. Speak scripture with confidence. If you speak it OUT LOUD the power of His word will change the lies that are taking up residence in your head. Fill your head with the truths about who God says you are.

The one who makes all things new can make you new too.

"This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!" II Cor. 5:17

The featured song is: Hello my name is child of the one true King! I have featured Matthew West's video because the message he sings and the way it is presented is powerful enough to blow the cover off those hidden messages zapping your life of the JOY He came to give you.

Take a moment to praise the one who chose you out of all creation to be his kid, his treasure. Let God fill you with inexplicable JOY as you ponder the immeasurable love God has for you because therein lies your true value.

Skill Of Listening

The next topic addresses our ability to listen. It is a skill that can be learned and an important key to ministering to others. Come join me to see what God has to say about the skill of listening.

Why thank you serenityjmiller! I love the study of James. It's so practical and life changing. Contemplation and lingering over a temptation is a sure way to be lured into sin. Capturing the temptation and laying it at the feet of Jesus will give us victory over sin. Thanks for stopping by with your encouragement. Blessings!!

"If we linger or contemplate temptation..." What a thoughtful wording. Thank you for sharing these insights from your study of James. I think we could all stand to spend more time in this particular book.

Greetings Mekenzie: I told you I would be dropping by to visit you. (smile) Great study in the Book of James. I love the Apostle James, he keeps it real. I like your KEY WORD: MISLED. The verses used in this study denote that God cannot and will never be the blame for us being misled because He is immutable and changeless. Renewal of our minds helps us to change and conform into His image and likeness, the Imago Dei! We are drawn away (misled) of our own lusts and enticed. Lust can only produce sin and the wages of sin will always pay death. Bless God that He is sinless and His love and life cancels sin for, in and through us by the power of the blood of Jesus Christ. Understanding this book is promising and navigates us towards obtaining His promises. Thank you for sharing and helping to make it real just as the Apostle James. Have a wonderful weekend.

Hello sweet Blossom, thank you for the kudos. It's clear in the verses studied here that God does not tempt us - He cannot because he is HOLY.

I agree that sometimes the source of temptation is the devil as noted in 1 Peter 5:8. "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" but in this passage it is clear that our own sinful desires can pull us smack dab into sin and that is why we must have a plan which I hope I pointed the reader to. :)

God does use everything, the good the bad and the ugly to make us stronger - if we commit our ways to Him and allow the magnificent potter to shape us.

How grateful I am for His word which gives us directions on how to live and also communicates how great is the Love the Father has for His children. Nice to see your dear face here .. I'll need to come visit your hubs and see what you are up to these days.

      Be Blessed!

Congratulations on a great study and set out so well, too. I'm not sure that it's God who tempts us, I rather think it's the Devil, but God can use those situations to teach us and make us stronger.

Good day to you Sweet Faith,

You always bring a smile to my face with your enthusiasm and encouraging words .. I can almost feel the warmth coming off the screen and into my heart. You are a treasure friend!

It is a wonder of wonder thought to know that God knit us together in our mothers womb. The world is a hard place to be but if we hide out hang out with our creator and savior we experience the JOY and abundant life He came to provide.

I've been gleaning many more insights by utilizing a 'closer look' method to Bible Study.

Thanks for stopping by for a read and leaving your insightful thoughts.

      Hugs and Blessings,

Hi my dearest sister in Christ, Mekenzie,

What a wonderful continued study on the Book of James.

Yes, Praise Him for He is unchanging! Can you even imagine if He were changing!

Just the thought that He knew us before He knit us in our mother's womb is a comforting and amazing truth to understand His character. In addition, as you state here, to be His chosen and prized possession - WOW. So great, so great is His faithfulness.

I am so glad He first loved us, so that we are able to love others.

Another excellent study here dearest Mekenzie.

      Voted up ++++ and sharing

(sharing buttons not appearing, will return to share)

God bless you, His good and faithful servant. In His Love Always, Faith Reaper
