Not Just Another New Year

Updated on January 2, 2012

Mayan Calendar
Mayan Calendar

A most interesting year

Well, here it is 2012. This is truly one of the most interesting of years in quite a while and don’t worry I am not going to be over zealous with a bunch of clichés and puns. The reality is however, that this particular year is extremely important to most of us as believers in Christ Jesus or for that matter anyone religious or philosophical.

Because of the Mayan calendar ending in December 21 of this our year of 2012 we find ourselves in a proverbial quandary over whether this is the end of days, end of time or the return of Christ.

While on one hand we as Christians are anxious for the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we have somewhat of a fear of the end of the world. In fact, as strange as it might seem, Christians appear almost “fearful” thinking that the end of the world might be just around the corner.

Although we have the greatest desire to spread the “good news” of salvation available to all mankind (evangelism), we have on the other hand a growing faction of the world population wanting to literally destroy us and everything we believe to be Sacred and Holy. The Bible is quite clear, “Christ did not come into the world to judge the world but to save it”. (John 12:47). So why are we so fearful?

It seems for many of us that with the New Year here, we have become so concerned with the likes of illegal immigration, diminishing religious freedom, the ignoring of the Constitution which was written primarily by Christian men and what other religions are doing in our country and their resulting growth that we have forgotten the WHY of Jesus actual mission to earth; the salvation of all of humanity.

Now hold on to this…….Jesus came, that is God CHOSE to become a man, be born as a human baby, allow Himself to be entrusted to human parents for caring, upbringing, safety and even education, begin a controversial ministry of CARING, LOVING, SHARING and ultimately giving of Himself FREELY on a cross in a disgraceful, humiliating public execution because HE LOVED THE WORLD……..YOU and I.

Yet, for many of us having just celebrated His wonderful birth, WE are upset. Some are depressed and others are just angry. Yes we’ve lost jobs, business is down, and many did not receive their traditional Christmas bonuses. Even some pastors are being effected and fearful of the future. I had a friend who was notified that although his church loved him, beginning the first Sunday in January, 2012, they would no longer be able to pay him on a full time basis.

The return of Christ should not be feared
The return of Christ should not be feared

Do not worry about tomorrow

The preceding years have been tough, to say the least and the predictions politically, defensively and financially are not good.

But Jesus still cares. He still loves each of us and knows EVERY need. How wonderful are the words of Jesus as he talks about the birds and how God protects and provides for them and how much more he will provide for us (Matt. 6:25-34 Paraphrased). As Jesus said, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”(Matt. 6:34 NIV)

Let’s remember that although Christ’s return and the end of the world are inevitable, when it will happen is not known and as such the Mayan calendar probably has little to do with it.

The fearing of Jesus’ return and the end of time are totally unnecessary; especially for those who know Him and follow His teachings.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV)

No, it’s not just another New Year. It’s a New Year of possibilities; all kinds of possibilities. So let’s lift each other up and pray for each other and for all of the necessities of life.

We must also pray that Christians will not become fanatical to the point of Y2K associating unrelated Biblical prophecy and scripture to the Mayan calendar end and bring embarrassment to the Christian World.

May our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ give everyone a joyous, peaceful and Blessed 2012.

Keep looking up and if He does come, be ready. Happy New Year.

Thank you for your read and comment Audrey. I really appreciate it. Yes I agree, although I think the Mayan Calendar is absolutely fascinating, I do hope so much it does not become another Y2K frenzy, although I did have an increase in patients back then...LOL Love and service to those around us is so very important. Let's pray no one will neglect the important aspects of life. Great comment, thanks for stopping by.

Great hub! I hope that people everywhere remember to act with compassion and love in their Mayan fear frenzy---if that is the right word or set of words--we must all continue to love and serve those around us.

Great comment michiganman567, you are correct I am sure. By the way, I am not saying there is NO link between the Mayan calendar and the 2nd coming of Christ, who knows? there very well could be BUT no need to panic in my opinion either way. Not much we can do except to trust in Christ.

I do enjoy your work as well and appreciate you taking time to read and comment on mine. Have a blessed New Year. Lee

Great Hub. I'm sure that there are already "Christians" out there who are linking up scripture to the Mayan calender. There will be a TV crew right next to them mocking Christianity if they can.

Ditto! I watched as the year 2000 approached and christians scrambled in fear trying to hoard and insure that earthly possessions were secure. How sad! I pray that this Mayan caused fear will cause some to consider life after death and turn to Jesus. Thanks for submitting such a true and well-written hub.
