The number 666

Updated on December 30, 2010

All you ever wanted to know about the number 666 (and a bit more!)

What do you know about the number 666? We all know that it is associated with the devil, a symbol of the Antichrist. But why is 666 regarded as the devil's number? What is special about the number 666? Is there any mathematical significance to this number?

Read on, and find out some interesting stuff about the number '666'!

How did 666 come to be associated with the devil?

Book of Revelation 13.18Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Six and Thirteen

What connects the two numbers 6 and 13?

Well, so far we looked into what we KNEW. Now we shall look at some facts that are largely unknown, beginning with the relation of the numbers 6 and 13, traditionally considered to be an unlucky number.

The Number 666 appears in Revelation 13, and is equated with the Greek word Hex/Six and the Hebrew word Vav/Hook, which are names for the sixth letter. Both these words appear exactly 13 times in Scripture! It doesn't end there; the number 13 is fundamentally hexagonal - sixfold - since it is the first non-trivial Star Number.

The numbers 6 and 13 also come together in the Prime Number 613 which is the number of the Jews, who cite that there are exactly 613 Commandments in the Torah. Similarly, it is the Jews who postulated God's 'Thirteen Attributes of Mercy'.

616 (six hundred and sixteen) is believed by some Christians to be the original Number of the Beast in the Book of Revelation in the Bible.

Different early versions of the Book of Revelation gave different numbers, and 666 had been widely accepted as the original number. In 2005, however, a fragment of papyrus 115 was revealed, which contained the earliest known version of the Book of Revelation discussing the number 666. It gave the number as 616, suggesting that this may have been the original. It is yet to be established whether this is the original number of the beast or not. What do you think?

After God cursed Adam and Eve, the Number 6 was marked with the sin of Man and the suffering (work) that he would have to endure for all existence. The connection between work and Six is first established in God's Six Day Work of Creation which is the pillar of the Six Days of Labor and the Seventh Day Sabbath.

In Kabbalistic Judaism the number 666 represents creation and perfection of the world. The world was created by God in 6 days, and there are also exactly 6 cardinal directions (North, South, East, West, Up, Down).

WWW = 666?

Does www stand for the number 666?

Well, we all know "www" is the acronym for world wide web and is normally used as the prefix, or first node of the Internet domain names. Is www the same as 666?

Well, YES and NO.

The Hebrew and Greek alphabet does not have a separate character or alphabet for numbers and letters. Letters are used as numbers. So each letter is a numerical value.

The Hebrew equivalent of our "w" is the letter "vav" or "waw", The numerical value of which is 6. So the English "www" transliterated into Hebrew is "vav vav vav", which numerically is 666!

Revelation 13:18 reads:

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

The number is NOT simply three SIXES or 6-6-6, but 600 + 60 + 6, or the number "Six hundred sixty and six".

We're curiously told to "count the number of the beast". In Revelation 14:11 the mark is referred to "the mark of his NAME". In Revelation 13:17, 15:2 It's called "the number of his NAME". So the "mark" and "number" refer to his "name".

The "count the number of the beast" is the total of adding up the letter/numerical value of his name. This count equals "Six hundred sixty and six', not simply three 6's or 666. If we apply the clear teaching of Revelation 13:18 to the Hebrew "www", we actually have 6+6+6 or 18 - not 666.

It's also been discovered the Hebrew letter "vav" means "hook, peg or nail". The number "6" also resembles a "hook". Is the internet "hooking" the world into the 666 system? Just some food for thought!

666 and Solomon's Gold

The Number 666 is associated with the Sun, which in itself is associated with Gold. Scripture associates Gold and 666 in the books of Kings 10.14.

Kings 10.14: Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was Six hundred threescore and Six talents of gold.

Saddam Hussein and 666

An interesting look at the dictator's name

As i have said before, the Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, and there are many different systems for assigning numbers to the letters. There is one numbering system used for everyday purposes. Using that system, here is an example:

Saddam = (samex, alef, dalet, alef, mem) = 60 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 600 = 666

Hussein = (he, vau, shin, shin, he, nun) = 5 + 6 + 300 + 300 + 5 + 50 = 666

Believe IT!

A few mathematical properties of the number 666

Don't worry, it's not Rocket Science! You can understand them!

1. 666 is the 36th triangular number. i.e. It is the sum of the first 36 natural numbers (i.e. 1 + 2 + 3 + ... + 34 + 35 + 36 = 666)

Also note that 36 = 6 x 6. 666 is the largest triangular number consisting of a single repeated digit.

2. 6, 36, and 666 are each the sum of powers of 1, 2, and 3:

6 = 11 + 21 + 31

36 = 13 + 23 + 33

666 = 16 + 26 + 36!

3. 666 is the sum of the squares of the first 7 primes:

666 = 22 + 32 + 52 + 72 + 112 + 132 + 172!

      Question. Would you get cursed when you look at the number 666?

      And if so, is there a way to treat the curse (if there is) after you look at the number 666?

      Fascinating! Something else I noticed... "hex" is also an old English word for a curse or magic spell. And in German, Hexe means witch. So it is easy to see why people were superstitious about a sequence of sixes.

      Interesting facts about the number 666. Number 6 has played a part in my family x 3 -- one son got married in June (6th month of the year), and another son was married in June, plus he was also 'born' in June - 666.

      As with all things in all bibles, it is the interpretation of a few that rule the many.

      I used to believe in the superstition of the number and avoided it. Now I don't.

      At work one day we ended the day with 665 parts so I decided to make one more just for fun.

      Great lens. It would be funny if it ranked out at 666. Thumbs up.

      Very interesting article, Arvind. The math lost me slightly. (O;

      I really love how you've looked at the number and the different facts that you have found about it.

      With as many times the book has be "translated" I would guess a lot of the meaning was lost or mistranslated.

      Great stuff. Cindy
