Personal Christian Retreat

Updated on November 25, 2012

Personal Spiritual Retreat for Christians

We live in a very noisy world.

Do you remember what quiet sounds like?

I know of a place where the quiet is a treasured commodity. It is located on the edge of Colorado Springs and is so well hidden from the din of the city, you'll never guess you are minutes away from commerce and bustling traffic. This gem of a place is called Glen Eyrie. Glen Eyrie is owned and operated by a Christian ministry called Navigators. Glen Eyrie was built by the founder of Colorado Springs, General William Jackson Palmer, in the late 19th Century. General Palmer built a Castle as his family home and the Castle is now the center of a popular retreat and conference Center that boasts 800 acres of near-heaven beauty. Nestled in a narrow canyon on the front range of the Rocky Mountains, Glen Eyrie hosts more than 52,000 visitors each year, but is spacious enough to provide each visitor ample quiet to hear God's voice.

Why Take a Personal Retreat?

Sabbath Rest

I admire people who take personal spiritual retreats; whether it is a retreat into a quiet part of their home or community or a long trip to a place of spectacular beauty, the results of the time devoted to God in quietness shows on their faces, in their conversation, and attitudes.

How many of us are driving through inconceivable traffic to get to work each day? Have you noticed the faces of the people sitting in the car next to you at the stop light? Do they look happy? Do they look content? I have to say that more often than not, they look angry. I've been yelled at a few times for changing a lane that slowed someone behind me more than they liked. I've been flipped off for driving a little too slowly for the narcissistic quest to get wherever they are going without hindrance. My own family tells me I'm a road-raging-momma. Okay, I'll confess to being a bit of a road seether. You get the point - we live in a culture that wants to go faster than is lawfully allowed and is noisier than God designed it to be.

In America, we live in hurried pursuit. The pace and hours we keep are running at dangerous levels. The pursuit of money, comfort, sustenance, and notoriety is intoxicating.

If you are a Bible reading Christian you know how often Jesus asked his disciples to come away with him to a quiet place. Jesus and his disciples lived among the crowd most of the three years they were together. You see the same pattern with Old Testament saints. God speaks to us individually and in quiet. Our God has to bring us away from the crowd to a quite place so he knows we are listening and able to comprehend what he is saying.

How long has it been since you heard God speak to you?

Here is a short list of benefits received in personal spiritual retreat:

  • Detoxify
  • Rest
  • Restore
  • Communion with God
  • Centering of Priorities
  • Hearing God's voice

INNOVO

latin, meaning "to be made new"

A popular and meaningful retreat offered by Glen Eyrie is called INNOVO. INNOVO is intended to give you space to be alone with God for one, two, or three days, but also offers morning and evening touch-points with facilitators each day that presents suggestions of spending a day alone with God and debriefing at the end of your day. The facilitator guides you through a detoxifying experience of coming away to a quiet place to spend time refreshing, rejuvenating, and re-energizing your soul. Breakfast and dinner are enjoyed in the beautiful Glen Eyrie Castle. Lunch is delivered to your lodge in order to keep your day wholly devoted to time alone with God.

Who Comes to INNOVO?

The people who attend INNOVO are as varied as the scenery at Glen Eyrie. There are pastors on sabbatical, couples who desire a word of direction from God, individuals (both men and women) who retreat to hear God's voice on critical junctures of life. There are nurses and counselors who want to turn off the pressures of their careers for a few days to be renewed in spirit and soul. There are missionaries who are on leave and have spent months fund-raising and want to end their leave in the quietness of Glen Eyrie and hear a word of encouragement to return to the mission field fully invigorated. There are moms who are at their whit's end, dads who are burned out, teachers who are exhausted, lay leaders who are struggling, grandparents who don't know what to do with the second half of life, and every gamut of individual seeking a quiet place to be alone with their Lord.

Whether you are ordinary or extraordinary, INNOVO is a retreat that promises rest. When you have 800 acres to explore and more than 25 miles of hiking trails to conquer, you will not be at a loss of nooks and crannies to hide away in for some time to read, pray, and praise the God who creates such beauty.

INNOVO is designed for people who desire to hear the voice of God; whether they are grieving loss, weary in well-doing, or have come to a crossroad in their life. The Program Staff reports witnessing INNOVO guests' countenance change over the course of three days. "It is as if the weight of the world has been lifted from their shoulders within 24 hours. It is a privilege to be a part of what God is doing; we are mere instruments He uses to do His thing in people's lives."

Innovo is currently being re-written as a self-guided retreat. Add www.gleneyrie.com to your favorites to learn more.

INNOVO Guest Comments

"A beautiful time to "come away with my Beloved!" Thanks for making it so easy! Loved the guided teaching in the mornings and hearing how our God spoke in the evenings. Hearing His heart for me so clearly -- without distractions of ministry life and community. Thank you so much for loving Jesus enough to minister to us all!" -C. Atkinson, Breckenridge, CO

I am so in awe with God's wonderful creation of this special place. The minute I walked into the property my heart just got immediately lifted up. As I gaze at those amazing rocks - "You are my Rock" becomes real to me. Sitting under those great big trees with their shade - "You are my Shelter" become reality! The Prayer Journey was so very special to me. The guided meditations really helped me look closer and deeper into my soul, the past, and the present. Being present with the Lod just gives me courage knowing He loves and accepts me the way I am - no matter how much I have sinned against Him. This Innovo really gave me HOPE!" - T. Chin, Toronto, ON, Canada

"Before coming here I was very shaken in my faith. The last few months God didn't seem interested in me or what I was going through. The last couple of days have been like a honeymoon with God. I found my first love again!" - A. Hasenauer, Nebraska

"I came to Innovo for rest and to be open to what God would share with me. Glen Eyrie is beautiful in all seasons and you feel the peace the moment you pull in the front gate. The facilitators were awesome as well as gracious hosts. I enjoyed their perfectly balanced personalities: soothing spirit and vibrancy! The accommodations and meals were definitely five-star!" - E. Slaughter, Texas

"God has met me here. He has been my source of rest. He has brought clarity and answered prayer. He gave me understanding of Psalm 131 and then showed me that I need to rest in Him and let Him take care of the big things in life - the ones too difficult for me to understand. I know He takes care of the little things as well. Psalm 131 is a good reminder that God is in control. He is my confidence. I need to spend more time with Him in prayer and meditating/memorizing His word. I loved my time here, I just wish it had been one or two days longer! - C. Pedersen, Colorado
