Quotes On Forgiveness

Updated on October 8, 2013

Quotes To Discover The Freedom Of Forgiveness

Like many people, I struggle with forgiveness.

My struggle is that if I forgive profound hurts that lay on my heart, then whoever hurt me will learn nothing and are then free to inflict their deed on myself or someone else again. I fear I would be condoning what was done and they would, in a sense, have won.

I am learning that forgiving is freedom for me to overcome the hurts resulting from the past.

Quotes on Forgiveness are powerful words that have helped me on my journey in forgiveness. Perhaps they can help you too.

Do You Struggle With Forgiveness?

I do....

We all have our struggles in life and I believe that a big one for many, many people is learning to forgive when a hurt or wrongdoing is profound leaving a deep wound or scar.

Usually those we struggle with forgiveness for are those closest to us, parents, siblings, a spouse or a close friend. Because of their closeness the wrong is more intensely personal and therefore more challenging to forgive.

My struggle with forgiveness is a result of repeated rejection and conditional love from a self involved, dominating mother and a father who lacked the courage to take control of his family and protect them from the hurts inflicted by her. I realize that my story isn't that far removed from anyone else's life challenges, but the hurt and resulting baggage are mine and mine alone. So I selfishly guard it, never coming to terms with exactly why I choose to guard and protect it rather than setting it free.

I say I've forgiven them, feel inside the I'm moving forward only to realize it's a cycle that repeats itself. Deep down I know even while my lips are moving in my heart, the bitter taste still remains, yes diminished but residing inside me just the same. When I reflect on my possessive attachment to my hurts and regrets I stare at them with a morbid fascination and contemplate why would anyone want to keep something so ugly and evil so close rather than set it free. Why do I allow this malignant baggage to live wide open and rent free in my heart?

Many, many people have forgiven far more grievous deeds than what I've experienced. What is it about me that won't allow these hurts to be set free? A commenter below states that forgiveness would be easy if one can just learn to forgive themselves. Perhaps there lies a key..........

I hope if you are here reading this because you too struggle with forgiveness, that you come to terms with whatever challenges life has thrown at you. We all deserve to be free from wrong and to live with happy and joyful abandon. If you have a story you would like to share, please do so in the guestbook below. Perhaps you can help someone shed the chains of whatever force is preventing them to forgive.

May your journey to forgiveness be victorious.

Forgive others as quickly as you expect God to forgive you.

To Forgive

Louis B. Smedes

On The Value Of Forgiving

Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future.

It takes one person to forgive, it takes two people to be reunited.

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.

When we forgive evil we do not excuse it, we do not tolerate it, we do not smother it. We look the evil full in the face, call it what it is, let its horror shock and stun and enrage us, and only then do we forgive it.

Louis B. Smedes

True forgiveness is when you can say, 'Thank you for that experience.'

Your sense of need comes through here and the passion with which you wrote it. There are things that disturb my peace but they are not allowed to interfere with my life for long. I forgive and forget but the pain lingers on and is easily awoken if a new offense occurs. Great lens. Blessed

This is such an important topic! I think that holding a grudge is like swallowing poison and hoping it hurts the other person, when in reality you are only hurting yourself.
