Sri Aurobindo Ashram
Pondicherry Ashram
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram was founded by Sri Aurobindo on the 24 November 1926 (Siddhi Day). At the time there were no more than 24 disciples in the Ashram [1]. In December of that year, Sri Aurobindo decided to withdraw from public view, and appointed his co-worker Mirra Alfassa, thenceforth known as The Mother in charge of the ashram.

The Guru - 21 January 1955
In an age like ours success alone counts and the material satisfactions it brings. However, an ever-increasing number of dissatisfied people are seeking to know the reason of life. And, on the other hand, there are sages who know and strive to help suffering humanity and to spread the light of knowledge. When the two meet, he who knows and he who wants to know, here springs up a new hope in the world, and a little light penetrates the prevailing darkness.
The western mind always finds it difficult to submit totally to a Guru and without total and unquestioning surrender to the Guru his help to you is paralysed. That is why generally I advise westerners to find the guidance and the Presence within them-selves; it is true that this process is very often open to uncertainty and self-deception, mistaking some voice of the ego in disguise for the Divine’s guidance. In both cases, it is only an absolute sincerity and an unmixed humility that can be your safeguard. With my blessings.
On Mother Birthday - 2011
Sri Aurobindo
The Mother - Childnood days
The Mother was born in Paris on 21 February 1878. Mirra, as the child was named, was the daughter of the banker Maurice Alfassa (born in Adrianople, Turkey, in 1843), and Mathilde Ismaloun (born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1857).
Maurice, his wife, and their son Matteo (born in Alexandria in 1876) emigrated from Egypt to France a year before Mirra's birth. Her early education was given at home. In 1893 she joined an art studio in Paris where she studied for several years.
Besides being an accomplished painter (some of her works were exhibited at the Paris Salon), the Mother was a talented musician and writer.
Till 8 years she lived here. The building was not extant.

Where is the Ashram located?
The Ashram is located close to the Bay of Bengal in the eastern part of Pondicherry, a small city and a union territory of modern India. Pondicherry was a French colony until 1954, long after India attained its political freedom. It is located 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state and a major city of southern India.
The ashram houses the mortal remains of Aurobindo and the mother. A calmness envelopes as you enter the ashram and you can see followers offering their tribute to the flower decorated Samadhi / Mausoleum under the Frangipani tree. The garden maintained inside the ashram is subtle and neat.
Gate pass is needed to access the library and the main building, which can be obtained from the Ashram office or enquire at the book shop. Guests can stay at the ashram and strict rules need to be adhered to when living inside the ashram. You need to book earlier for staying in the ashram. The ashram is open to the public daily between 8 AM -12 PM and 2 PM - 6 PM. Children below 3 years of age are not allowed inside the ashram. Permission from the ashram authorities is needed to take photos inside the ashram.
The Significance of flowers
Sweet Mother, how do you give significance to a flower?
By entering into contact with it and giving a more or less precise meaning to what I feel by entering into contact with the nature of the flower, its inner truth; then one knows what it represents.

Man’s Relationship with the Divine - “The Divine” and “Man”
For those who are afraid of a word:
This is what we mean by “Divine”: all the knowledge we have to acquire, all the power we have to obtain, all the love we have to become, all the perfection we have to achieve, all the harmonious and progressive poise we have to manifest in light and joy, all the new and unknown splendours that have to be realised.
The Divine is indeed what you expect of Him in your deepest aspiration.
The Divine is the perfection towards which we move. And if you like, I shall lead you to Him very willingly. Have confidence.
