Superstitions about God
My Friend's Experience
My friend was working in Allahabad, India. Allahabad is popular for Sangam - the confluence of Ganga, Jamuna rivers with river Saraswati also joining in but not visible to us.
In that otherwise boring town, he used to drive up to sangam once in2-3 months and sit there, quite like sitting in Marina beach at Chennai.. There is one Tamil temple in that river bank and one old, disgusting fellow was looking after it.
Suddenly he noticed that an young priest in that temple. He went in and found a new bunch of young priests, one of them from Madurai. The Senior of them was also an youngster from Tamil Nadu, living there with his family. The priest felt very to see me, did special pooja, gave lot of prasadam etc.
Not You.. It's God
Thereafter, whenever he drove to sangam, he visited that temple. Every time, that priest used to say it was some special day, Pradosam etc etc, made him sit there, watch all abishekam, aarthi, gave him me lot of prasadam and then only leave him. It used to take almost an hour and ate into his idle time on the river bank.
He tolerated it for 3-4 times. Then he got his transfer out of Allahabad came and he went to that temple just to say good bye to those fellows. That day also the senior told him to wait as it was some auspicious day.
In irritation he asked how come that every time he came it was some auspicious occasion. The priest smiled and replied,
"Sir, you didn't come here by yourself, Lord Shiva brought you here every time!"
Recently my friend's father passed away at about 5:30 pm during 12 April 2011 or so. Some time in Aug-Sep 2011, He was telling his wife that their visits to Siva temple has completely stopped, despite having so many of them around.
After few days, his wife went alone to Kapaleeswarar temple, Chennai. There some one stole her purse! She angrily came back home and yelled at gods, priests, him, and everyone!
On completion of 1 year after his father's death, his mother wanted him to finish all the Kashi, Gaya rituals soon and so he first went to Rameshwaram. The tradition is to take sand from Rameshwaram and put it in Sangam at Allahabad, then go to Kashi and Gaya.
At Rameshwaram, there were many rituals in the morning. Evening he was free and strolled into the temple. the curtain was drawn in Siva's shrine. So he waited.
As the curtain opened for him to have Darshan of Siva, he suddenly felt like looking at his watch. It was 5:30 pm on 12 Apr 2012!
Though not prohibited, it is said that up to 1 year of family member's death, it is not advisable and therefore avoid auspicious acts. That Allahabad priest's words rang in his ears,
"Sir, the Lord only brings you here."
