The Color Red In Magick
Roses Are Red
The color red is associated with several things in witchcraft. It is said to be a tricky color to use. This is because red is the same color as blood. Blood is a very upsetting idea to the conscious mind. It has several negative connotations. Beginners are often recommended to start with a shade of red which looks a little less threatening. I never obeyed these warning which I read in various books on witchcraft. Red is my favorite color. I have always been eager to use it.
There was a time when I was afraid to write in red ink. This superstitious fear was rooted in the idea that red exposed me to anger. I had experienced a great deal of angry feelings through a phase of my life. I steered away from red ink whenever I had a choice. The year I did my Mars working I purposely used red ink to overcome this superstitious fear.
I worked with Mars magic the year I quit smoking. This was very effective for me. It was a interesting ritual where I used a red pillar color. I had also created my own annoiting oil and incense. My ritual was conducted at the Spring Equinox. I had been experiencing a loss of energy from some medication that I was on at the time. I wanted to get my life more active and fulfilling. This ritual was concerned with finding ways to get active. Quitting smoking was not the objective of this magic working. It occured by the time the year ended anyway. I also was able to finally eliminate my need of the medication I was on that year. I ordered a Mars amulet from Amazon to help with this ritual. I did this 6 months after the initial ceremony. My Mars amulet from the Key of Solomon arrived in the mail on the day of the Autumn Equinox. This means that the Sun was in the 1st house in my astrological chart. I was able to give up smoking for good that very day.
Working with the color red in witchcraft is very simple. You might select red clothing, candles, flowers, or wine. There are different ways to use this color.
The Red Planet
Mars is the natural ruler of the astrological sign of Aries. The first day of spring occurs when the Sun enters the sign Aries. Aries is named for the Greek god Ares who is a god of war. Mars is the Roman war god. These 2 deities are essentially the same being.
Mars is called the red planet. In astrology it represents our sexuality and aggression. This planet which points to the ways in which we assert ourselves. In magick we would use this planetary energy for a variety of reasons. We could use it in love magick. This might enhance our virility or make us look sexier. We could also use this energy to help gain will power for a new fitness regime. Many people would use this planet in works against enemies. Often Mars has violent associations, but there are other ways in which this energy can be used. Sometimes it is important to uncover suppressed rage in order to move ahead in our lives. This is also an appropriate use of Martial planetary energy in witchcraft.
Mars can be used in different astrological phases. Using an ephemeris you can track the position of Mars throughout the year. An ephemeris will list out when Mars is in certain astrological signs. You would select a time when Mars is in an appropriate house or sign to do your magickal working. When I did my Mars workings I selected a day based on the position of the Sun. I did not pay attention to the placement of Mars at all. I selected Spring Equinox when the Sun went into Aries. In some witchcraft traditions the Sun`s ingress into Aries is considered the beginning of the new year. This also works well as Mars governs an Aries Sun.
Red is the color associated with the element of Fire. Fire is the Southern direction. It is easy to see why magickians in the Northern hemisphere would select South as the direction for Fire. As we move towards the south in the land the warmer it gets. South is governed by the Archangel Michael in magick. He is a fiery angel with a passion for doing God`s will. In Tarot the suit of wands is associated with fire.
Pyromancy is another form of divination you might be interested in exploring. There are many different techniques. The simpliest form of pyromancy is to stare into a campfire and observe the shapes you see. This is similar to dream analysis. Some magickians like to use a dream dictionary to explore potential meanings of images they saw in the fire. You can keep a scrying journal to record your progress with such work.
