The Miracle of the Resurrection Plant

Updated on January 7, 2014

A Lesson for Sunday School During Lent and Easter

I have taught Sunday school over 15 years and the lessons building up during Lent and heading into Easter are my favorite ones to teach. A few years ago in Arizona I found a plant in the local gift shop called the Resurrection Plant.

My curiosity got the best of me and I looked at the dead plant in the bag and although the science side of my brain said yes, I asked the clerk "Does this really work?" She smiled brightly and exclaimed "Oh yes, it's great fun, the kids love watching the plant come to life."

She had me sold, I had seen video of the desert turning green in just a few hours after a rain and didn't know how it happened. It makes sense that a plant like the Rose of Jericho would be sold in a desert state like Arizona, and I had just come from the desert where all the plants "seemed" dead.

So I purchased a plant and brought it to my Sunday School class. For three years I used the same Resurrection Plant as an example of how Christ died and came to life on Easter. My kids were enthralled and captivated and it's one of their favorite memories of church.

Resurrection Plant - It Dies and Comes Back to life

This plant is a perfect example of how things that appear to be dead really aren't dead after all, but just dormant. Just give this Rose of Jericho Resurrection Fern some water and the fronds open and turn green within just a few hours.

Rose of Jericho - A blooming plant in the desert

Whether you call this plant the Resurrection plant, Rose of Jerrico, Dinosaur plant, or the for Miracle plant it is a very cool and fascinating lesson. Adults and children are fascinated on how quickly it responds to water and opens.

Not many people have seen this unique plant before and it quickly becomes a conversation starter. Deserts bloom within hours from what appears to be a dead and desolate environment. But when given life giving water these types of plants open, turn green and bloom into color.

@tazzytamar: Great, hope to see you back then. They are a lot of fun and the Sunday School kids love them. We put them in the water at the start of class and by the time church is over a couple hours later they have really opened up.

I have to say that I think this is a brilliant idea for children! My son will be nearly 18 months old this Easter so may be too young to 'get it' but I'm still going to buy one and see! I will be back closer to Easter! Again, fantastic idea!

I've heard of the resurrection plant, but this is the first time I've actually seen it. My boys would have loved watching this when they were young. Great idea for Sunday school and, of course, for Easter.

Loved seeing your pictures of the resurrection plant returning to life. The plant looks very much like the Joshua trees my husband and I saw throughout Arizona. Wonderful article.
