12 Baseball League Awards

Baseball is America's game. Everywhere you go people root hard for their favorite team. It's also a lot of fun to have debates over who's team is the best. Trying to determine who is better is not always an easy answer and depends on many factors.

One way to evaluate the quality of a ballplayer to another is by comparing individual statistics. League award are a very good indicator. Baseball players strive to take home one of these coveted awards. These awards have direct impact on a player's salary and are regularly used as incentives in player's contract. The significant individual major league baseball awards are:

League MVP is given annually to one outstanding player in each league of Major League Baseball. Since 1931, it has been awarded by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Major League Baseball Championship Series MVP Award is given to the player who contributes the most to his team success in the League Championship series. There is no MVP for the Division series.

World Series MVP Award is given to the player who contributes the most to his teams success in the World Series. it is decided by a combination of media members, Major League Baseball officials, and fan voting.

All Star MVP Award is given to the most outstanding player in each year's Major League Baseball All-Star Game. It has been awarded each season since 1962.

Cy Young Award is given to the best pitcher in each league, the American and the National. It is determined by polling by sportswriters in each baseball who pick their first, second and third place choices for the award. The formula is weighed with the first place votes = 5 points, second place votes = 3 points and third place votes = 1 point.

Rolaid's Relief Award is giiven to the top relief pitcher in each league at the end of each season. This award is based on statistical performance and not on opinions. Each reliever is gets 2 points for a win, 3 points for a save and -2 points for a loss.

Gold Glove Award is given to the best fielder in each position

Silver Slugger Award is given to the best offensive player in each position

Rookie of the Year Award is given annually to one player from each league as voted upon by the Baseball Writers Association of America

Triple Crown Pitcher Award is given to a pitcher who leads the league in three major pitcher categories: earned run average, wins and strikeouts

Triple Crown Hitter Award is given to a batter who leads the league in three major hitting categories" home runs, runs batted in and batting average

Comeback Player of the year is given to one player in each league reorganized for having "re-emerged" as a player during a single season.
