2000 Worlds: Michelle Kwan, Irina Slutskaya, and Maria Butyrskaya

Updated on February 24, 2015

Michelle Kwan in 2000

Basically Kwan's speed above is what she needs in order to maintain her competitive edge.

Her jumps are 0,-1,0,0,0,0 and 0. Her average PCS is 8.5.

I figure I've marked -1 on what Dick called first rate.

Kwan's jumps are inherently in low scale, due to her physiological disadvantage and that also causes her moves sometimes less cohesive.

You can compare Kwan's skating with Tara Lipinski's or Ashley Wagner's today.

Wagner also has issues regarding to jump technique, but Wagner shows an edge in power and overall flow to Kwan while Kwan appears more expressive and polished than Wagner.

Kwan's momentum wasn't as adequate as Lipinski. And that's her Achilles heel.

Michelle Kwan in 2000

Contrary to her free program, Kwan's short program here appears subdued.

Her jumps are -1.-1 and -3. Her average PCS is 8.0.

You may feel amused on a fact that I marked -1 on what Dick called "very clean" and "quality jump".

You can say that the bar of "quality" has been raised ever since.

Irina Slutskaya in 2000

Wow, wow, wow!

Irina Slutskaya never looked more disastrous. Something was definitely wrong with her.

I thought she was equal with Kwan in many aspects, but with this performance, I am totally taken aback.

Where is Slutskaya that I know?

Slutskaya doesn't skate, doesn't move and doesn't do anything correctly.

In order to compete with Kwan Slutskaya has to bring out all her substances; otherwise she has no chance.

Her jumps are -3,0(double),-1,-1,-1,-1 and 0. Her PCS is 7.25.

Irina Slutskaya in 2000

Yeah, there must have been some issue with Irins Slutskaya.

Her jumps are -3,-1 and -1. Her PCS is 7.25.

This is very disappointing. I may need to change my opinion on Slutskaya. Her skating seems dramatically regressed here.

Maria Butyrskaya in 2000

Her jumps are -1,-1,-1,0, void, -1, and -1. Her PCS is 7.0.

In her third jump sequence, the first one is good, but second one really bad, so I marks -1 overall. I think the marks are generous.

Butyrskaya's skating level is lower than Slutskaya;Butyrskaya is the exact level of Sarah Hughes. However, despite Slutskaya's ruinous skating here, Butyrskaya's jump quality is, as you many notice, too poor by default to earn GOE.

Her jumping technique shows neither flow nor physiological balance on landing as it should.

Nevertheless Butyrskaya has pulled out an admirable performance here.

Maria Butyrskaya in 2000

She did very well again.

Her jumping technique impedes the general quality of her skating, but in this program she has done more than her ability allows her to.

Her jumps are 0,0, and 0. Her PCS is 7.5.

Slutskaya is a better skater than Butyrskaya, no doubt, but in this competition I won't oppose if the judges put Butyrskaya ahead of Slutskaya.

In other words, Slutskaya's advantage appears too compromised to hold her up against Butyrskaya. This is anther Kwan-Hughes moment.

Who do you think is the winner of the 2000 Worlds?

Between Butyrskaya and Slutskaya, which do you think beat the other in this competition?
