2009 NFL Draft Complete - Player Jerseys Now Available
After all the hype and months of mock draft, the 2009 NFL Draft is now history. Overall, this year's draft class was considered relatively weak top to bottom but there will still plenty of future Pro Bowl players selected.
The winless Detroit Lions started things off by selecting Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Matthew Stafford, and then signed him to the richest-ever NFL rookie contract. The St. Louis Rams picked at spot #2 for the second consecutive year and filled a big hole on their roster with offensive tackle Jason Smith from Baylor. New GM Scott Pioli selected DE Tyson Jackson from LSU at spot number three, followed by the Seattle Seahawks also staying on the defensive side of the ball with linebacker Aaron Curry from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
The 2009 Draft's first major trade occurred at spot #5, where the Cleveland Browns moved the pick to the New York Jets so they could select top QB prospect Mark Sanchez from the USC Trojans. Sanchez now becomes the favorite to be the Jets QB in 2009, after one disasterous year with Brett Favre at the helm. The Jets also made headlines on day 2 of the draft, trading away additional picks to move up to the top of round 3 to select Iowa Hawkeyes RB Shonn Greene.
Other significant first round picks included WR Derius Heyward-Bey to the Oakland Raiders, WR Michael Crabtree to the San Francisco 49ers, RB Knowshon Moreno to the Denver Broncos and Brian Orakpo to the Washington Redskins.
