2009 NFL Football Draft Preview

Updated on April 6, 2009

The countdown to the 2009 NFL Draft is well underway, to the annual event in New York. The 2009 draft happens on April 25th and 26th.

After completing the first winless season in modern NFL history, the 0 - 16 Detroit Lions have the honor/dishonor of selecting first overall. With the long overdue departure of Matt Millen from the Detroit front office, we can safely assume the Lions will stay away from wide receivers this year. Although they clearly need a franchise quarterback, there are also many other positions of need on their roster.

There are two QB prospects in this year's draft who have distanced themselves from others: Matt Stafford from the Georgia Bulldogs and Mark Sanchez from the USC Trojans. Will the Lions select one of these QBs at the top and dole out the huge contract to him? Or do they play it safer and go for one of the top offensive tackles, such as Eugene Monroe from Virginia or Jason Smith from Baylor? Bill Parcells and the Miami Dolphins, who completed a massive 10 win turnaround last year, opted for the safer strategy last year, selecting OL Jake Long over QB Matt Ryan.

Other former college players expected to be top selections in the 2009 NFL Draft include: LB Aaron Curry from Wake Forest, wide receivers Michael Crabtree from the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Jeremy Maclin from the Missouri Tigers, and defensive players B.J. Raji from Boston College and Brian Orakpo from the Texas Longhorns.
