2012 Buffalo Bills Schedule Preview Weeks 1-5

Updated on June 5, 2012

Buffalo Bills Lead The Charge

The 2012 Buffalo Bills Look To End Their Playoff Drought

The Buffalo Bills currently own the longest playoff drought in the NFL. Buffalo has not made the playoffs since 1999. However, they have made great strides in improving their roster from a year ago. The Buffalo Bills 2012 schedule also looks to be a favorable one down the stretch.

The Bills signed Mario Williams to a team record $100 million contract in the off-season. Mark Anderson was also signed to help bolster an anemic pass rush that rarely was able to put pressure on the quarterback. Dave Wannstedt was tapped to run the defensive this season.

On offense, the Bills re-signed running back Fred Jackson to a contract extension. Combined with third-year player C.J Spiller, the Bills look to take advantage of what should be a solid running game.

It will be up to quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to limit his mistakes if the Bills want to take that next step on offense. Two question marks on offense this upcoming season will be his play and that of the wide receivers. Outside of Stevie Johnson, the Bills lack a proven threat at wide receiver. How much will that matter in the 2012 season? Only time will tell.

Even though the season doesn't start until September, it is never too early to start talking about the upcoming season. Here is a rundown of what Bills fans can look forward to schedule wise this season.

Week One: Buffalo Bills at New York Jets

The 2012 Buffalo Bills schedule kicks off in New Jersey against the Jets. It will be the first game that Mario Williams will play for the Bills. It will also mark the return of Kyle Williams and Shawne Merriman from IR.

These two, combined with Marcel Dareus, should make life tough for Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez. If the Bills are able to generate a pass rush, they should be able to keep the Jets offense under control. Sanchez has shown that he will make poor decisions when he is under duress.

Match-Up To Watch:

On offense, it will be interesting to see how Stevie Johnson matches up with Darelle Revis. Revis is known as one of the best defensive backs in the game. However, Johnson has been able to get the better of Revis recently. Buffalo will be able to run their playbook with greater efficiency if Fitz is able to use all of his weapons.

Bills Win If...

Buffalo wins this game if they can generate a solid pass rush on defense. On offense, they need to make sure that they run the ball more than 13 times in a game. They need to control the ball to take the Jets fans out of the game.

The Bills come out firing on all cylinders. Buffalo 31 Jets 17

Week Two: Buffalo Bills vs Kansas City Chiefs

The Bills shocked a lot of people by beating Kansas City 41-7 in a week one match-up last season. That game featured an early exit by Chiefs safety Eric Berry. Buffalo won that game because they won the turnover battle and were able to limit the effectiveness of Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles.

The 2012 Buffalo Bills schedule sees the Bills playing their first game at home in this game vs Kansas City.

Match-Up To Watch:

Buffalo safeties vs Kansas City tight ends

The Bills have had trouble in the past defending against tight ends who possessed any sort of ability to get open. Buffalo will depend on its pass rush to disrupt the routes that tight ends will be able to run against their secondary. If the rush fails, Matt Cassel could have a field day throwing to Tony Moaki.

The Bills Win If..

Buffalo has to make sure they follow the same plan that won them the game last year. Stop the run, win the turnover battle and feed off the energy that the home fans will give them. The home opener is never a fun game to lose.

This will be a close game, but the Bills get the edge due to their ability to win games at home. Buffalo wins this one 21-20.

Week Three: Buffalo Bills At Cleveland Browns

The Buffalo Bills have had a hard time beating the Cleveland Browns in recent years. The blizzard game of 2007 saw the Bills get beat 8-0 in Cleveland.

2009 saw the Bills lose one of the ugliest games ever played when they lost to Cleveland 6-3. Derek Anderson completed two passes that day. He won.

The 2012 Bills schedule sees the Browns coming back to Buffalo as the Bills try to beat Cleveland for the second consecutive time. Buffalo defeated Cleveland in 2010.

The good news is that the Bills offense should be significantly better than the Browns on this day. Even third overall pick Trent Richardson won't be able to do much to help his team win the game.

Match-Up To Watch

Trent Richardson is the only player that scares you on offense for that team. Therefore, his performance against a rebuilt Buffalo front seven is the only thing worth watching. However, even if he rushes for 100 yards, the Bills should be able to put up enough points to overcome that.

The Bills Win If

Buffalo wins this game as long as they don't overlook the opponent. They should remember the game in Cincinnati last year as a lesson to never doubt the ability of any team on any given week.

The Bills are going to make it another 3-0 start. While the Bills can't take this game lightly, they should win this one fairly easily. Buffalo 28 Cleveland 10.

Buffalo Bills vs New England Patriots

Buffalo ended their losing drought against the Patriots at Ralph Wilson Stadium last season. Buffalo came back from a 21-0 deficit to win 34-31 in a week three thriller.

The good news is that the Bills have the confidence needed to stare down the big dogs of the division. The bad news is that Tom Brady is still the quarterback. You take nothing for granted when you play against a QB who is that talented. Buffalo's pass rush is going to need to really be working at its best to contain him. Don't expect a repeat of last season's four interception performance.

Match-Up To Watch

Buffalo secondary vs Rob Gronkowski

Gronk only had 17 touchdown receptions last season. Of course he is the player that Buffalo wants to contain if they want to slow down Tom Brady. On the other hand, Brandon Lloyd, Deion Branch and Aaron Hernandez are also effective targets in that offense. Also keep an eye on Fitzpatrick in the second half. He has been instrumental in winning or losing the last few match-ups vs New England

The Bills Win If...

Buffalo wins if they can manage to score at least 35 points. It will be a shoot-out in Buffalo on that particular Sunday. Fitzpatrick needs to be flawless and Buffalo needs to rattle Brady a little bit. Certainly not an easy task on either side.

Buffalo wins because they are at home. Otherwise, this one probably goes the other way. Buffalo 38 New England 35.

Week Five: Buffalo Bills vs San Francisco 49ers

Finally, a Buffalo Bills-San Francisco 49ers game that means something. Sports fans haven't had that luxury in almost 20 years. Chris Berman must be smiling somewhere. This game should feature two stout defenses that will not give an inch. The 2012 Buffalo Bills schedule sends the Bills on the first of what will be two consecutive games out on the west coast.

Match-Up To Watch

Fred Jackson vs Frank Gore

Both defenses should be able to stop the pass rather effectively with their pass rush. The key will be which running back has the better day on the ground. Something else to watch out for is the Bills having to travel all the way across the country. Jet lag could be an issue.

The Bills Win If....

Buffalo wins this game if they play a fundamentally sound game on both sides of the ball. They need to keep Gore under 100 yards. Making Alex Smith throw more than 15-20 times in a game spells disaster for that offense.

The Niners defense was really good in 2011. They probably won't lose too much of that tenacious attitude in 2012. It should be a good game, but Buffalo drops their first game of the year 21-17.

Buffalo Should Be On The Right Track

After five weeks of the 2012 NFL season, the Bills should be sitting pretty at 4-1. This will probably be good enough for at least a share of the AFC East lead. The Patriots should be right there with the Bills as a two team race develops that should go all the way to the final week of the season.

We should know by now if the Bills are any closer to answering their questions on offense. Head coach Chan Gailey should have a pretty good understanding of where his team is at this point. My money is on Marcus Easely being the number 2 receiver on the team by this point in the season.

Previews and predictions for weeks 6-10 will be posted on a subsequent hub. Please feel free to leave any feedback in the comments section.
