KR ReyKjavik vs R. Standard de Liege

Iceland's KR ReyKjavik welcomed Belgium's R. Standard de Liege in a first leg qualifying match. Standard Liege comes in as the favorite to advance to the next round. With the first leg in Iceland anything is possible as KR is looking for the upset in front of their home fans.

First Half Breakdown

Standard Liege started off on fire as they put pressure on KR from the get go. Mujangi had a shot on goal in the fifth minute that was saved by Halldorsson. Vainqueur in seventh minute and Batshvayi eleventh minute would miss their target as Standard Liege was firing on all cylinders early. Finally in the 14th minute KR got a shot off as B. Sigurdsson missed the target. Kanu of Standard Liege would pick up an early yellow card after his foul on O. Hauksson. Batshuayu would get a shot on goal but Halldorsson was there for the save in 21st minute.

KR started to mount an offensive game as O. Hauksson would get a shot off wide in 24th minute. Five minutes later B. Gudjonssov would have one on target but Kawashima was there for the save. Standard would counter when Mpoku would miss the target in 29th minute. Ezekiel would be on target but once again Halldorsson was there for the save in 34th minute.

KR would break through when Finnbogason scored in the 35th minute to the delight of the home crowd. Standard would not take that lightly as they mounted a charge. Kanu would miss the target in 37th minute but he was perfect in 44th minute as he leveled the score at 1-1. With three minutes of stoppage time in first half Standard pressed harder. Mujangi missed in second minute, then had his shot saved in third minute by Halldorsson. Buyens of Standard would get his shot blocked right before the whistle.

Second Half Breakdown

The second half belonged to Standard Liege. They could not have been happy going into half leveled at 1-1. Mujangi had two shots blocked in the 47th minute and Van Damme missed the target in 50th minute. Mujangi would straighten out his shot in 54th minute but Halldorsson was their for the save. Mpoku was blocked two minutes later while Kanu was looking for his second goal in 57th minute. It was saved by Halldorsson. Arslanagic had his shot blocked in the 58th minute.

KR would make a change as #14 Brynjar Gunnarsson would replace Saevarsson in the 59th minute. Standard Liege's Vainqueur would get booked in 61st minute for a hard foul on B. Sigurdsson. Standard would take the lead on a goal from Batshuayi in the 62nd minute. Mujangi would miss the target again in 64th minute. He would be replaced a minute later as #11 Frederic Bulot came in for him. KR would make another change in 67th minute as #7 Gary Martin would replace Sigurjansson. Opare missed the target for Standard in 69th minute.

Both clubs made a change in the 73rd minute a KR sent in #15 Emil Atlason for B. Sigurdsson while Standard brought in #41 Ibrahima Cisse for Vainqueur. Martin of KR would pick up a yellow card in 75th minute as KR could do nothing right. Standard would keep pressing as Cisse missed target in 76th minute. Mpoku put one on point but Halldorsson made the save three minutes later. In the 80th minute KR finally got a shot off at goal as H. Hauksson effort was saved by Kawashima. Standard would make their final substitution in the 81st minute as #20 David Biton came in for Ezekiel. More shots from Standard as Mpoku missed in 84th minute followed by Batshuayi miss in 88th minute. Biton put one on but Halldorsson was there for the save. Mpoku scored in stoppage time on a direct free kick as Standard won 3-1.


KR must be shacking their heads as Standard put them through an onslaught. With a return leg in Belgium this Thursday look for more offense from Standard as they should move easily into the third round.
