Zenit Saint Petersburg loses on road
Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg lost to AEL Limassol 1-0 on the road in their third qualifying round first leg tie. Lukasz Gikiewiez of AEL Limassol scored in the 64th minute to give the home club a win in the first leg.
Zenit dominated the game with 22 total attempts at the net but only five of those were on target. AEL had only three attempts and only one of those were on target but it went in. Zenit held a 10-3 corner edge also but a 67th minute Red card for Witsel killed Zenit's chance of a comeback. Both clubs played a some what dirty game with a total of seven players booked.
Besiktas wins 2-1 on road against Feyenoard
Feyenoard upset at home
Netherlands club Feyenoard suffered a first leg tie lost against Besiktas to start their Champions League tourney. Goals from Mustafa Pektemek in the 13th minute and Kerim Koyunlu in the 71st minute was all Besiktas needed for a surprising 2-1 road win. Feyenoard did get a goal five minutes into stoppage time when Mitchell Te Vrede scored from the spot.
Feyenoard held a 6-2 advantage on total attempts and a 4-2 advantage on target also. Feyenoard had a eight to four corner advantage but could never capitalize on any advantage. A total of six players where booked with four coming from Besiktas.
Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk suffers 0-0 draw against Copenhagen
Home Draws are a killer
Clubs from Ukraine and Belgium both suffered home draws to start their Champions League tourney.
Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk of Ukraine played to a 0-0 draw with Copenhagen. Even with a 12-4 total attempt advantage Dnipro could not put a shot in the back of the net. Like all other games with big name clubs, the referee had a busy time pulling cards out of his pocket. Four players received yellow cards.
Standard Liege of Belgium also played to a 0-0 draw against Panathinaikos. Both clubs had tons of attempts on goal, with 27 between both clubs but only a sad two for each club was on target. This match saw eight players receive yellow cards with Standard taking five of those.
LOSC Lille gets a big 2-0 win on Road
The only winner is LOSC Lille
France's LOSC Lille scored a 2-0 road win against Grasshoppers. Sebastien Corchia scored in the 29th minute while Ryan Mendes scored in the 49th minute to give Lille the inside track on advancing to the next round.
Lille held a 9-6 total attempt advantage. Only three of those nine were on target. Grasshoppers unfortunately had three players booked while Lille had zero.
