2014/15 Belgian Pro League: Match-day One Recap

Match-Day One Recap

Every club played their first match of the new season during the weekend. Standard Liege jumped to the top of the league table with a 3-0 home win over Sporting Charleroi. Geoffrey Mujangi Bia scored twice for Standard Liege to go along with a goal from Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez. Standard Liege finished second in last years table and will be playing in the third qualifying round of this years Champions League tourney.

The defending champions Anderlecht also was a winner at home during the first match-day. Goals from Frank Acheampong, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Matias Suarez helped the home club win 3-1 against Mouscron-Peruwelz. Anice Badri scored for Mouscron-Peruwelz. Anderlecht will play in the Group Stage of this years Champions League tourney.

Only one club started the new season with a road win. Club Brugge defeated Waasland-Beveren 2-0 to grab an early road victory. Goals from Nicolas Castillo and Oscar Puarte was all Club Brugge needed for the win. Club Brugge is also seeing European action this season as they will be playing in the third qualifying round of this years Europa League tourney.

Gent and Cercle Brugge had the only draw of the first match-day as neither club could score a goal. Neither club is playing in any European competition this year. An early road draw for Gent is a good start for this season.

Further Match-Day One Recaps

Zulte-Waregem scored a 2-0 win over Kortrijk to start their season off with a bang. Idrissa Sylla scored both goals for the home club. Zulte-Waregem will start their European season in the third qualifying round of this years Europa League tourney.

The last Club playing in European Competitions this year suffered an early defeat. Westerlo got a goal from Maxime Annys to earn an 1-0 home win over Lokeren. Lokeren start their European season in the Play-Off round of this years Europa League tourney.

Alhassane Keita scored twice for Lierse as they defeated KV Oostende 2-0 in front of their home fans. Mechelen got goals from Jason Adesanya, Glenn Claes and Sofiane Hanni to defeat Genk 3-1 at home to start the new season. Khaleem Hyland scored the only goal for Genk.
