2015 NFL Season Preview and Predictions--NFC North Division

Updated on August 29, 2015
Anything is possible with Aaron Rodgers.
Anything is possible with Aaron Rodgers.

Packers

The Packers have to get the taste of the NFC Championship Game out of their mouths. That should be easy to do because they have Aaron Rodgers at QB. The Packers are pretty solid on offense. They have one of the best passing attacks in the league. They have a solid run game with Eddie Lacy grinding out yards. Their offensive line is the weakest link on this side of the ball. They always seem to battle injuries and struggle with consistency. They have lost their top WR Jordy Nelson for the season. That is a tough loss but I think this team can absorb that. They always seem to have guys ready to step up.

The defense improved last year. They finished 15th in the league. They been floating around the bottom the last couple of years before. They did enough to get off the field in crucial moments. The Packers are always tough as long as Rodgers is healthy. This is their division to lose and they will be a tough out for any team in the playoffs.

Lions

The Lions got it right by firing Jim Schwartz and hiring Jim Caldwell. They transitioned nicely under Caldwell. Caldwell is just what Matt Stafford needed in a coach. Caldwell who has been a QB coach in the past. That helped in getting Stafford to cut down on his turnovers and take care of the football. Calvin Johnson missed games to injury but he's still the best receiver in football. Golden Tate turned out to be a steal in free agency and now they have a great pair at receiver. The passing game is legit. They need to get the running game going to add balance and take pressure off of Stafford. They are hoping that Ameer Abdullah can provide that spark in the running game. The offensive line needs to be consistent in the run game as well. They seem to be solid pass blockers but not that good at driving guys off the ball.

The Defense is the star of the show on this team. They were the number 2 defense in the NFL in 2014. They lost their star player in Ndamukong Suh in free agency. They didn't sit around pouting they went out and traded for Haloti Ngata. I don't expect them to miss a beat. If this team could keep up that pace on defense and run the ball effectively, they could be the most dangerous team in the league. I don't think they are there yet. I think they can be there in a year or two and will be tough to beat. I expect this team to be a wild card team and push the Packers for the division title.

Vikings 8-8

The Vikings were dealt a major blow losing Adrian Peterson for the season due to suspension. They fought hard and a good season with a Rookie Head Coach and Rookie QB. It seems like Mike Zimmer is building something good in Minnesota. Tedy Bridgewater looks to build on the momentum he had at the end of the season. They get Adrian Peterson back. They have a lot of work to do on the receiving core and offensive line. Zimmer is a defensive minded coach and it won't be long before they ready to do some serious damage. I don't think they are there yet. I expect them to be and 8-8 team in Year 2 and in Year 3 is when they could be scary but that's a year away.

Bears

The Bears are coming off a terrible season and a coaching change. There will be a change in philosophy and Bears fans should expect a rocky season. John Fox was hired to run this team. He is saddled with a talented but turnover prone quarterback in Jay Cutler. If Cutler buys into Fox's plan, they could have something to build on in Chicago. History has shown us he won't. So there is a lot of uncertainty at the QB position. Matt Forte gives them an ultimate weapon in the backfield. They have a beast at WR in Alshon Jeffrey. He puts a lot of pressure on defenses. They drafted Kevin White with the hopes of replacing Brandon Marshall who was sent to the Jets. White may miss significant time so they may have to wait until next year. The offensive line has the talent to be really good but they had a let down year in 2014.

I liked that they hired Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator but I don't think they have to right pieces to execute his defense. Bears fans will need to be patient with this defense which will be tough for a team whose history is built on defense. I don't know that Fox is the right hire and there could be some dark days ahead in Chicago.

We agree on the Packers and seem close on the Vikings. They see the Lions going backwards and I don't agree with that. They overvalue John Fox and I think he's overrated.
