2015 UFAs Due for a Payday

Updated on May 25, 2015

The unrestricted free agency can be a beautiful thing for fans. But it can be also be a nightmare for the players. With the uncertainty or their NHL futures, players know that its do or die while in the final year of their contract, just to stay in the league. But on the flip side, some players see this as a crucial bargaining tool and could be in for a pretty substantial raise in their pay. But who amongst available free agents are looking to collect in the summer?

Will the Boston Bruins be able to resign Carl Soderberg?

Carl Soderberg - Boston Bruins

29 year old Carl Soderberg was one of only two Boston players to lace up for all 82 games this year. The 6' 3", 216 lb, Swedish centerman skated on the third line, winged by Daniel Paille and Reilly Smith, a line that combined for 97 points in the regular season. Soderberg contributed nearly half of those, and was even tied for 3rd in points with Milan Lucic, beneath Bergeron(55) and Eriksson(47).

He was originally drafted by the St Louis Blues in 2004 entry draft 49th overall, but spent his entire professional hockey career back in Sweden. After a deal with the Blues in 2007, the Bruins would acquire the rights to Soderberg, and in 2013, the Bruins would sign the Swede to a 3 year, one way contract.

Over the past two seasons with the Bruins, Soderberg would play 155 games, notching 29 goals and 92 points. All while on a $1 million per year salary. As the Bruins continue to implode defensively, expect Soderberg to look for work elsewhere, to teams looking to boost their offensive numbers, but don't be surprised if the Bruins wave a fat paycheck in his face to keep him.

Will Matt Beleskey return to the Ducks next season?

See results

Matt Beleskey - Anaheim Ducks

Beleskey is coming out of a break out season with the Ducks, and has found a home on the top line with the Ducks' franchise players, Getzlaf and Perry. While yet to play a full 82 game season since being drafted by Anaheim in 2006, Beleskey has still made excellent use of the ice time he has been given and has broken the 20 goal mark for the first time in his NHL career.

At the end of a two year contract extension for $1.35 mil a year, Matt Beleskey has expressed interest in staying with the Ducks organization, and contract talks between his agent and the Ducks are currently in progress.

As of May 23rd, Beleskey has played 13 playoff games with Anaheim this postseason, and has 6 goals and 1 assist, but if the Ducks can make a deep playoff push and Beleskey can pad his numbers a bit more, expect to see him in a Ducks' sweater next year, with a much fatter wallet.

Will the Minnesota Wild sign Devan Dubnyk to a large multi-year deal?

See results

Devan Dubnyk - Minnesota Wild

After being acquired by the Minnesota Wild from Arizona at the trade deadline, on January 14th, many questioned whether this would the end of Dubnyk's NHL career. In a deal that sent Dubnyk to Minnesota in return for simply a draft pick, the Wild would soon realize that they had just made one of the best trades in in franchise history.

The 2004 1st round pick by the Oilers would make his debut with the Wild on Jan 15th, posting a shutout en route to a 7-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. He would go on to win 7 of his next 10 games, earning his team at least a point in 9. With Mike Yeo's job on the line, after a controversial video of him at a Wild's practice was released, Dubnyk would come to Minnesota's rescue as their new #1 and lead them past the West's hottest team, in St. Louis, before getting swept by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Like Beleskey of Anaheim, Dubnyk has come out and publicly said he would love to stay with the Wild and wants to be there. Contract negations are underway and the Wild have hinted at a deal being made well before July 1st, leaving little doubt that Dubnyk will be back for another season. With Minnesota having approximately $5 mil in cap space, it's possible Dubnyk could see the biggest pay raise of all the UFAs out there.
