What is Wakeboarding?

In 1982 Wakeboarding got it's start and it was called Skurfing. It's a combination of snow boarding, surfing and water skiing. The rider holds a cable and is pulled by a speed boat. Advanced boarders do flips and twists ten feet or more in the air and land on top of the water with ease. You can ride water waves, ocean waves and of course the best jump ramps of varying heights.

Wakeboards vary in length, width and weight. The lighter the board the faster the board will move which does wonders when trying tricks. Also, wakeboards have a rocker which goes from the start of the board to the fin at the end. Some Wakeboards have fins which vary in siza and other boards do not have a fin at all. The sport or activity of Wakeboarding has really gained ground and gotten a huge following over the past decade. Wakeboarding events have been aired on television and attended live by thousands constantly for the past ten to twelve years. The sport came about in the 1980's, grew in the 190's and took off in the 2000's.

* If you have ever been Wakeboarding please share a story with me. Leave your thoughts in the comments box located at the bottom of this article.

Where Do You Wakeboard?

You can wakeboard basically anywhere water is at as long as a boat can be allowed in the water. Never try to wakeboard in shallow water as it can be dangerous. Start out slow and get used to the water environment before jumping into the action. Think of it as warming up like other sports do before starting the activity.

Wakeboarding is common in lakes or rivers but it's also done in the ocean waters as well even though it's much more dangerous because of the huge waves and the sea life. Remember to check the tides or flags in the ocean and in any water that you wakeboard in check the local weather.

Always wear safety gear when riding the water surface including gloves, goggles and padding. And most important, make sure the driver of the wakeboard boat or speed boat is experienced and knows what he is doing. Wake boarding is a thrill seekers sport and jumping waves and ever more so jumping Ramps is an unforgettable experience.

Wakeboarding Tournaments

Many Wakeboard tournaments occur across the globe each and every year with a large audience watching live. The biggest United States tourneys are located at beaches in California, Florida, South Carolina and Virginia Beach, Virginia. Smaller Wakeboarding events take place at local lakes in America and sometimes WKeboarding is an opening event before Surfing Championships take place. If you ever enter a major tourney be sure and get a top notch board and boots too!

Single and team competition takes place as far as racing goes and tricks and technique. Ramps for jumping are set up and scores are measured based on speed and if the trick was executed. The terms frontside and backside are talking about the way the rider is turning or flipping. Hang time and leaning is just important as doing a trick in this hobby of thousands.

Wakeboard Tricks!

Tons of Wakeboard tricks and techniques exist. Below is a sample of some of the more popular ones.

Krypt: The Krypt is a heelside raley that turns into a frontside 180* spin.

Blind Judge: Blind Judge is performing a heelside raley and then turning it backwards into a backside 180* trick.

Tweety Bird: Tweety bird is doing a Whirleybird trick without air being obtained from the Wake.

Scarecrow: Toeside front roll combined with a frontside 180* for the finish.

Fruit Loop: Toeside front flip with an additional backside 180*.

At least 35 more tricks are known of for Wakeboarding experts but the ones above are my favorite ones. Getting air, turning flips and hang time are the staples of a good boarder. These tricks and water techniques are not or beginners and should only be attempted with help of a trained professional in the trade. True pros can board forward, backwards, blind folded, and they can flip and get air the same exact way without any problems.

Up, Up and Away...

Some Wakeboarders can get really high in the air but the best and the least inexperienced all crash sometimes. Be prepared because it can hurt if you hit wrong or get clipped by the board.

Final Thoughts........

Wake boarding is entertaining to watch without a doubt and if your willing to put in the time and get proper practice then it's a thrill to actually do. Any fan of watching/ performing surfing or water skiing will have a blast wake boarding.

I have attempted Wakeboarding and it was awesome. I'm not very good and no tricks were performed but going fast and jumping the waves was the cream of the Crop. It's easy to tread the water surface unless the driver if the boat starts to go to fast or take big turns.

I recommend at least watching Wakeboarding live once in your lifetime. If your a water sports fan and like water sports then give it a try. Start slow and pick up the pace s you feel more and more at home on the board. If the wave or jump is really high then lay down on the board when landing to prevent a serious and painful injury.
