A Lot Can be Achieved Through Walking

Updated on March 30, 2017

A lot can be achieved through walking. You know all those times you couldn't wait to enter your car to work, take an elevator to your office or board a bus to grocery store, you are missing out on a lot of benefits and things you can find just by walking.

Do you plan on losing weight or improving your lifestyle? Why not choose to walk to most places that you used to drive to. One of the reasons why there are so many obese people in the United States today is that we have been reduced to a lazy lifestyle. Most of our ancestors did not suffer from these sorts of problem, they trek to everywhere they want to go making them not just fit but healthy as well.

Last year, a woman wrote to me, she wants to know how she can lose weight, so I recommended that she start by walking to grocery store instead of driving. I also told her to take a bus to walk instead of using her regular car. The reason for taking bus is to give her an opportunity to do some real walking, which can be extremely beneficial. I later lost contact with her. But was surprised when I opened my email last week to see her email, here is what she wrote:

"Hello John, thanks for your recommendation. If you can remember, my name is Linda, I contacted you last year about my weight problem and I decided to take your recommendation. I started doing more of walking than driving. In fact, this has been very therapeutic for me. Hey John, do you know I have lived in this city for years without knowing that we have some stores that deal on antiques. I saw all these wonderful antiques in a store at end of my street.

John, it does not stop there, I have also increased the number of shoes in my ward robe. I was exhilarated to discover that some of the shoes and clothes I ordered online were being sold just a stone throw from my house, I drove pass this store everyday while going to walk but never bothered to check what they have in stock. Walking has been very eye-opening for me; I have discovered a lot of things and even achieved more than I hoped for.

When I started, it seemed like an impossible task, I sweat a lot and got tired pretty fast. But all that have changed; now I sleep everyday looking forward for the walk the next morning. I have actually reduced my weight. Hopefully, in one month time, I will achieve my weight objective. The progress so far gladdens my heart so much; indeed, walking is a great way to find great finds". Thanks, Linda.

Benefits of Walking

Walking is a great form of exercise. It is a form of an aerobic exercise that will help you lose weight and keep fit. The best thing with walking is that it does not require any investment apart from your time and willingness to walk. You don't need to invest in any expensive gym equipment. Moreover, walking can be done anywhere, or anytime.

You can lose weight by substituting elevator ride with walking or replace driving to work with a bus ride. To lose a pound of fat, you will need to burn 3500 calories extra; you can achieve this when you combine walking with great diet plan.

The idea of walking is to help you lose more calories than the calories that you intake. Of course, the first few days may be hard because your body is trying to get accustomed to your new routine. You may even experience some aches in some part of your body. But don't worry; it is all part of the process of reaping the benefits of walking.

If you walk on a moderate pace, you can actually burn 26kcal in the first 10 minutes. If you walk more 10 minutes, you can burn up to 53kcal. A thirty minutes moderate pace walk can help you burn as much as 80kcal. This means that you can burn up to 184kcal in 30 minutes if you increase the pace to 4 miles per hour.

Walking is very beneficial. You need it to make your day complete. The benefits that one can enjoy from this simple but yet, often neglected practice is enormous. Start walking today to find great finds.
