A Short History of Sportsbook and Online Poker Rooms

Updated on August 28, 2012

With The Gaming Club in 1995 and InterCasino in 1996, gamblers worldwide had access to games of chance for cash. The number of online casinos has grown to allow for unlimited wagering opportunities. To keep online poker rooms and sportsbooks fair and transparent, the Mohawk Nation of Kahnawake, Canada, established the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. This commission regulates the gaming activity of the Kahnawake Tribe. It also issues licenses to several of the world’s online poker rooms and their sportsbook. Internet casinos are operated out of countries that have legalized and licensed online gaming. These countries include Australia, New Zealand, Antigua, Costa Rica, Belize, the Turks & Caicos Island, Great Britain, and Canada. More nations are considering legalizing online gambling.

As with everything else in the digital world, Sportsbook and online poker have found a home on the internet. The advent of online “virtual” casinos goes back to the mid 1990’s, and has flourished since. The earliest versions included eighteen different casino games, along with online access to a National Indian Lottery. An internet sportsbook was part of the initial push into online gaming. Although the legality of online gamblingand online poker has affected opinion in the United States, many other countries have embraced the online casinos and turned players into big winners with big profits for the online casino “dealer."

History of Online Gambling

The First Online Sportsbook

Credit for the first internet based sportsbook belongs to Intertops, established in 1996. The office for Intertops is based on the island of Antigua, which has legalized gambling licenses for this sportsbook as well as other online gaming choices. Intertops has been in business as a telephone betting service since 1983, and has been very successful prior to their transition into the virtual world. With customers in over 180 countries, and accepting thousands of wagers daily, Intertops has an undisputed reputation as being a fair sportsbook.

The First Online Poker Room

1998 saw the advent of multi-player online poker games. Planet Poker was the forefather, and cash games were played until 2007. As of then, Planet Poker went to a “play” money site. But the popularity of online poker and online gambling has spurred other sites to pop up. Others in the online poker business include Paradise Poker, Party Poker, PokerStars, and Full Tilt Poker. The popularity of online poker will result in expanded opportunities to online poker rooms for years to come.
