The Epitome of a Basketball Star

I will always remember that even down in Alabama where I am from that Michael Jordan had a major impact. Celtics and Lakers fans would change the channel of their team to watch Jordan and the Bulls on another network. That was Jordan, clearly above his sport. A celebrity and mainstream personality. He won the Slam Dunk Championship in 1986 and 1987. In 1987, he scored a perfect 50 on his final dunk which he performed from the free throw line. The way he glided through the air with his legs out is where they got the Air Jordan Nike logo. Not to mention, Coke uses his name in it's commercials. Jordan transcended his sport like no other. He had endorsements with Nike, Rayovac, Wheaties, Gatorade and Coke, just to name a few. His skill level was above the rest and he did little thing's that others didn't. You want examples. Jordan shooting a free throw with his eyes closed and making it. How bout at the halftime buzzer he lands a half court three, nothing but net. For those of you who think Kobe Bryant is as good as Jordan I got some more stats for you. Six Championship rings with the Chicago Bulls. 5 time MVP, 10 time scoring champion, 3 time steals leader and a 14 time all star in the league. The list goes on and on. Rookie of the year in 1985, 2 Olympic Gold Medals. The list goes on forever. Jordan was so much better than the great players he was playing against that he could play to the crowd and his dunks were amazing. Jordan remains the only player that can change directions twice in mid air before dunking the ball with ease. Most NBA players are either good on offense and defense. With Jordan you get the best of both worlds. Jordan was instantly great from the moment he won an NCAA Championship in North Carolina and was drafted into the NBA. He lead the league in scoring his rookie year! And the NBA that Air Jordan played in was stacked full of quality players such as: Magic Jounson, Larry Bird and Shaquille O Neil. He schooled them all. His gliding through the lane and dunking and his fade away jump shots are stuff of legend. Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant and Julius Erving are great players but, Jordan is an elite player on a level by himself. Along with Muhammad Ali and Babe Ruth he is the most famous athlete on earth. Watching him play was a thing of beauty. He was the best on the court and you would know it by watching him play even if you have never seen him before. He was talented and he put in all the hard work. The result was the best basketball player in the history of the game. Jordan was born in 1978 in Brooklyn, New York but lived in North Carolina most of his childhood. He won the NCAA Title with the Tar Heels by making a last second shot. That is when his skills as a clutch player came to the forefront.

Proof of Michael Jordan's fame is that 5, 6, 7 year old kids know about Jordan and he has not even played basketball in several years. There are cars that have the Jordan logo on them and not to mention his shoes and constant TV ads. He continues to amaze off the court just as he did on the court.

College or Pro Hoops?

The NBA is superior to College basketball because only the very best college players make it to the professional ranks. If the best team in college football history played the worst NBA team in history then the NBA team would win something like 140-40. Not to mention the experience factor involved in pairing young guys against these mature players who have been around the league. This is not just an opinion it is a fact, pure and simple.

At the outset of his career everyone saw Jordan was going to be an amazing scorer. Probably the best ever. What made him the greatest player of all time is how the rest of his game evolved. He led the league multiple times as a defender, learned to distribute the ball when teams were keying on him and figured out how to pick his guys up when things weren't going well. That is the mark of greatness: somebody who can take a weakness and make it a strength.
