So You Want To Learn Wrestling!

Discover High School Wrestling , Double AA , Triple AAA, Junior Olympic and College Scholarships, through to the State Champs.

I have been inspired to write this hub as my husband has often talked about his high school's chosen sport with many fond memories and even now after many years I might add ,what he learned has remained with him all this time , and it seemed timely to share his knowledge with someone else who may be interested or know someone who is.

So far I can find Wrestling is a very old sport and its History goes back as far back as Biblical Times , however the most well known history would be that the sport was invented by the Romans and Greeks, primarily for sport ,education, conditioning and battle training.

Some Important Basics

Whats It All Mean?

There are three two minute periods.

1st Period To start both opponents will be standing facing each other inside a circle ( see photo)

2nd Period A referee will flip a coin deciding who has the up position and who has the opposite ,down position. This is called the 'Referee's Position'.

3rd Period Positions are reversed.

The object is to put your opponent on his back-called pinning your opponent.

A pin is when you put your opponent on his back ,with any part of both shoulder blades, coming in contact with the mat for two seconds.

When you pin your opponent, the match is declared over, and you are the winner. Of course that's the objective and more often than not it will usually involve a takedown ( more further down) to achieve this goal.

Since pinning is a definate win, 6pts are automatically awarded.

ON THE MAT
ON THE MAT

High School Wrestling And Summer Camps

Takedown

Standing up, you take control of your opponent and in the dominant position-2pts

Escape

Getting away, escaping ,from your opponent, so you are both standing ready to start again.-1pt

Nearfall

Almost but not quite, getting your opponent pinned-2 0r 3pts

Reversal

When a position is reversed and the person who had the original dominant position loses it, control is reversed and goes to the other person.

Those are some of the very basics to a beginners guide to wrestling. The links that I have provided will explain and go into much more depth than I can ever hope to tell you.

Check your state for availability.

I have learned so much from my husband first hand ,and also more recently through various official websites. As an amateur sport I believe it offers young and old alike, techniques and skills, that will last them a lifetime . Training and sportsmanship is respected as much as winning competitions on an Individual or on a Team level.

It should not be confused with the hype and glitter of Professional Wrestling( although some amatuers have gone on to Professional wrestling) wheres its focus is mainly on Entertainment

Technical Violations

Forcing your opponent off the mat or leaving the mat yourself to avoid wrestling wil incur a violation.

Grabbing any part of opponents clothing ,headgear , or the mat.

Aggressive roughness that violates fair play.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct gestures or comments which are deemed offensive or unnecessary.

CLOTHING

Safety with style !

Wrestling singlets ,main garment and these have improved alot ( they needed too ) along with some very cool and safety conscious wrestling shoes ( see link) on latest styles available.

Ankle supports , highly recommended for support to important joints.

Knee pads ,just remember when buying these to find some that will be comfortable and go through the motions to get the right feel thats right for you.

Wrestling head gear , another important and compulsory item ,to protect the head and ears.

Many major department stores and specialty well known sports store will carry a selection ,if in doubt check below links.
