Importance of Playing Team Sports

Team sports are a huge part of American life. From children's playgrounds up through professional team sports, boys, girls, men, and women are playing baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, and other organized team sports. Why are schools and communities encouraging the participation of youth in team sports? It's simply because these sports can be very useful in developing the character and work habits of their participants. In this article, I attempt to show the benefits of playing team sports.

What Are Team Sports?

Team sports might be defined as organized games in which a group of two or more individuals called a team has to work together in competing against another team to win a contest. Neutral officials called referees, judges, or umpires make sure the teams follow prescribed rules during the game. Examples of team sports would be such games as basketball, baseball, cricket, football, soccer, and volleyball.

Benefits of Playing Team Sports

I played many team sports when I was young. Baseball and football were my favorites, and I developed a great passion for these sports which I still have. The benefits obtained from engaging in team sports have prepared me and others for life by making us aware of the following:

1. Importance of Teamwork

To accomplish any goal such as winning a game, individual members of a team must work together. If teamwork is missing, even the best of athletes playing together cannot be successful in winning. Many people refer to good teamwork as good chemistry among teammates.

2. Accepting Responsibility

In addition to teamwork, success in sports and life comes from each member of a team accepting the responsibility he or she must bear. In the case of football, each member of the team has a certain responsibility that he must perform in concert with the responsibilities of other players. For example, the center is responsible for calling out blocking schemes to other linemen and also centering the ball to the quarterback. The left tackle must protect the quarterback's blind side by blocking the oncoming rushing defensive linemen or linebackers.

3. Playing by the Rules

In sports, just as in life, you must play by the rules to be successful. If for example, the umpire calls a pitch a strike while you are batting, you must accept that call just as you would when a policeman with his radar detector finds you have been speeding on the highway.

4. Acceptance and Development of Leadership

Every member of a sports team accepts and develops some degree of leadership. In basketball, this is primarily seen in the role of the point guard who must lead his team in the scheme of trying to score, by penetrating the defense near the basket and distributing the basketball to other teammates for scoring. In football, the obvious leader of the offensive team falls on the shoulders of the quarterback. He must lead the team trying to score points by passing the football to the correct receiver or handing it off to a running back at the opportune time.

5. Importance of Preparation and Planning

Organized team sports prepare kids for life by teaching the importance of preparation and planning, If any team wants to be successful in winning a game, it must have a good scheme for attacking the opposing team's defense. These schemes can only be obtained through the execution of careful preparation and planning among all team members.

6. An outlet for Manifesting One's Passion and Hard Work

Passion for doing something is one of the needed ingredients for success. Through engaging in sports and with good coaching, an athlete can channel his passion and hard work for a certain sport into an excellent performance for team success.

7. Perseverance

In addition to planning, preparation, and passion, perseverance is necessary for anything you do in life. One of the biggest lessons learned in team sports is that you can not be successful in winning by accepting defeat. It is necessary to learn from mistakes and to keep trying until success is achieved.

8. Practice Makes Perfect

Organized sports also teach the importance of practice for ultimate perfection. If a baseball player wants to be a good hitter, he must through constant long practice perfect a good batting stance, swing, and eye-hand coordination to hit the ball. Anyone who is a good shooter in basketball has most probably perfected his form by taking countless practice shots.

9. Pay Attention to Detail

In team sports, kids also learn how important it is to pay attention to detail in learning skills such as hitting, shooting, or catching a ball. This will translate to later work success by paying attention to all of the details needed to do a good job.

10. Importance of Competition

Being able to compete is the key to success in team sports and life. Since everyone is striving for the same goal and only a few can obtain it, it is necessary to struggle for success through competition. Sports teaches competition through the development of motivation by coaches and the eventual self-motivation of the mature athlete.

11. Development of Self-Confidence

Finally, team sports instill in an athlete the sense of self-worth and eventual self-confidence for accepting the role they must play to make a team successful.

Some people have advocated eliminating team sports from public schools to save money for underfunded schools. This would be the worst thing to do because team sports play such a significant role in developing the character, work habits, and other moral virtues of youth.

While I'm not much of a fan of any kind of sport, I played my share of sports available in school. I agree that team sports teach much more than just how to play the game. A great article that everyone needs to read. Voted up again and useful/interesting. Also shared on Awesome HubPages and shared on HP.

Paul, this is another excellent article! I found your points about the benefits of playing team sports very insightful. I believe that when parents involve their children in organized team sports from a young age, it not only exposes them to competitive outlets where they can strengthen their skills but it empowers them to boost their self-esteem, develop healthier eating habits and promotes long term positive, overall wellbeing, physically, mentally and emotionally. Great topic! Thank you for sharing. (Voted Up) -Rose

You have made valid points about the importance of team sports. When I was a kid in Wisconsin, my dad mowed part of the field next to our home and set it up to play baseball. We had lots of fun learning how to play the game although none of us went on to become superstars. Ha! UUI votes and sharing and pinning.

This hub contains important and valuable information and advice and so I'm going to share it again with my followers and also pin it. I'm in a quandary as to which board to pin it to. Education, since it teaches important lessons when children play sports in school? Or Sports, for obvious reasons. I'm going to go with Sports for now. :)

While I'm really not very much into sports, participating or playing (I was when I was in elementary and high school and I was good at them), I do still see the importance of sports and agree that team sports teaches important valuable lessons and builds confidence. Excellent hub as always. Voted up, and will share!

You have captured the TRUE essence of team sports...all the things kids should be learning and can learn if some parents let them be. While competition is necessarily involved it is more about the learning and character building team sports can provide without anyone being "preachy". Your hub really hammers home the good facts!

Voted up, useful, awesome, and interesting! Five stars. Oh, and sharing.

I really appreciate your comments, sharing, and pinning of this hub. Even though some sports can be somewhat dangerous playing, I never regret having the experience of being on a high school football team. It taught me so many lessons about life.

A very accurate and extensive Hub Paul, congratulations. While not a 'team sport' as such, I can apply lots of these points to my past in martial arts, because the training is very team-orientated.

Thanks for encouraging the benefits of team sports. :)

You are so right about all the benefits that team sport bring! I think kids should learn team sport already at a young age; there are so many benefits outside of the physical benefit!

Thanks for sharing your thougths about this subject !
