Best Bike Helmets for Kids 2013

Before I begin my review of my favorite bike helmets I wanted to give you as parents or guardian a few interesting numbers from "Kids Speak Out On Bicycle Safety" listed at the US Product Safety Commission:

  • Children between ages 5 and 14 have the highest rate of injury of all bicycle riders.
  • Each year, more than 500,000 children go to hospital emergency rooms or doctors' offices due to bicycle injuries.
  • More than half of these collisions happen on neighborhood streets, sidewalks, or playgrounds.

"Nationally, only about 15 percent of all kids wear bike helmets."

After seeing staggering numbers like that its easy to see the importance of bicycle safety in toddlers and youth, but what bicycle helmet should you buy?

While all of the helmets I've listed include important safety features and will help to prevent brain injury in a crash make sure to get a bike helmet that your kids will actually wear. In other words if your child is willing to wear a helmet that is "less safe" than another helmet remember that wearing a helmet at all is better than nothing.

Bell Youth Helmets

One perfect way to get them to use a helmet is to purchase Helmet from Bell. Bell helmets have been worn by and protected more world champions than any other helmet brand. Bell helmets feature an ABS plastic shell with a low profile fit that can be used for both skating and biking. They also feature 13 unique designs and 4 sizes so you can custom style and fit it to your child's needs.

Best Bike Helmets for Women 2013

Here I've listed some of my favorite bike helmets for women. My favorite is the Giro Skyla Women's Bike Helmet which comes in 11 different styles to fit your personality.

The Gyro Skyla is made with a tough outer mircroshell fused together with an EPS foam liner for maximum protection and comfort. Ventilation is perfect with the Skyla because Gyro has added 20 vents to allow the cool air in and the warm in out while you're biking. I also like that it's been approved by the U.S. consumer product safety commission. In general you should make sure that all of your safety gear has been approved and tested by the product safety commission. If it hasn't, then I recommend you look elsewhere.

An Acu Dial fit makes it easy to adjust and it only ways in at 270 grams so you don't get that heavy head feeling after an hour of biking.

*Safety Tip - Remember to wear your helmet low enough in the front to protect your forehead.

Best Bike Helmets for Men 2013

Last but not least, I'm listing some great bike helmets for men. Not only do Bell and Giro helmets provide you with some of the best safety features in the market, they all come customizable. Be sure to look at the sizing options and standards that they come with to ensure that you get a helmet that fits correctly.

*Safety Tip - Make sure to check your adjustments every time that you wear a bike helmet to make sure that none of them have changed. A correctly adjusted helmet is of premier importance in ensuring your safety.
