You May Have Noticed the Wheelchair
Yes professional catfisherman Jonathon Herndon is in a wheelchair. while we were fishing one night Jonathon told me his story. Jonathon Herndon was a cute 10 pound baby when he first came into this world just like most all babies. He was 10 months old and had begun trying to learn to walk by pulling up on chairs and couches just like the rest off us did. That is where our similarities changed, Jonathon pulled up and slipped falling back and cracking his C3 vertebrae. This is the 3rd vertebrae below your skull, it is a very high up fracture. At 10 months old as a baby Jonathon was now paralyzed from his neck down.He was too small to do surgery on and so he spent the next few years of his life paralyzed, his parents were told he would be like that all his life . As he got older and grew some the doctors were able to do surgeries to try and fix some of the damage. He eventually gained the use of his arms and upper body.
Now with the aid of his custom wheelchair he can run his Suntracker pontoon, fish the tournaments all over the country and drive his truck. I will tell you he can cast farther than I can even though he isn't standing up. He runs a catfishing tournament and just about anything he puts his mind too.
Growing up in a non-conventional way made Jonathon think a little different. In and out of hospitals as a child and growing up he got a look at a different world than most of us. He persevered though hardships we can't imagine. Someone once said that Jonathon "thinks outside the box", growing up like Jonathon did I believe he didn't even know there was a box. Being what we consider to be handicapped was his way of life, if there was a box it was only that Jonathon was ever figuring out how to do what he wanted do with what he had.
