Runkeeper Review | the Best Running App
Official RunKeeper Website
What is Runkeeper?
RunKeeper is one of the best running, health and fitness apps (applications) I have ever used. It is also one of the few free running apps available. It can be used to track running, cycling, mountain biking, walking, hiking, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, skating, swimming or rowing activities. You can also manually input information into the app. I primarily use it to track my running and walking with the GPS. You can also use it along with GymPact to make money off of working out. All you have to do is integrate RunKeeper with GymPact and RunKeeper will automatically send the workout you log to GymPact. RunKeeper is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Android phones. It is developed by RunKeeper, Inc.
The profile section of the RunKeeper app keeps track of your weight, goals, pace, calories burned, elevation climbed, time spend in activity and your personal records. It is easy to get a general idea of how you are doing and how far you have come.
When you input your weight, Runkeeper adjusts how many calories you are burning from the activity based on your weight. This is really handy for those who are counting calories and need an accurate number.
If you are trying to achieve a certain goal, RunKeeper can help keep you on track. You can choose a goal based on the total distance you want to run/walk/bike in a certain time frame. You can choose a distance that you would like to achieve by a certain date. You can choose to lose weight or to finish a race by certain dates.
The app will keep track of your progress by telling you what percentage of the goal is complete. If you chose a goal of finishing a race by a certain date, it will give you a count down until that date, showing you how many months, days, hours and minutes until your race starts.
RunKeeper Training Plans
RunKeeper has a bunch of different training plans you can choose from if you have a specific goal. Each plan tells you what your workout for each day should be. It keeps track of if you have completed each scheduled workout and will remind you when you have one scheduled.
Some of the training plans include:
- Running 4 Fat Loss
- Sub 60min 10k
- Beginner Marathon
- Sub 4 Hour Marathon
- Sub 2:30 Half Marathon
- Beginner 5k
- Beginner Half Marathon
- Intermediate 1/2 Marathon
RunKeeper makes it very easy to listen to your music while you are using the app. When you go to start a new activity you choose the input type (manual or GPS), the activity type (running, walking, etc.), the play-list you want to use (shuffle, all music, top rates, most played or a custom list) and if this workout is part of a workout plan you have created for yourself.
Once you put in the information you want, you just tap "Start Activity." It will tell you that the activity has started and will also update you every 5 minutes to let you know how you are doing. Every 5 minutes the alert will tell you how far you have went, how much time you have spent, your average pace and how many calories you have burned during this activity.
You can also add your friends on your app to keep each other encouraged.
