Bicol's Best in Athletics

Updated on March 19, 2012

Today, I would like to share my thoughts on sports and the values that accompany it. In many sporting events especially in the public school system of the country, many cases of falsification of documents and the like have been treated. It is but important to stop this practice and malpractice only to stay true to our commitment of being value-lade citizens as our schooling system pursues in its vision.

Every year, the chosen host for the Palarong Bicol welcomes throngs of athletic delegations from the key provinces and cities of the Bicol Region.

This gathering aims to choose the best crop of athletic champions worthy of being pitted against other regions’ best comes Palarong Pambansa in the annual summer sports fest.

More than choosing the best among the best is maintaining the integrity of the athletes qualifications to join the said even because for years now, the screening committee is poised with a big question on the athletes eligibility to compete, for competitions like this is undeniably tattered with irregularities as to the their real identity and other accompanying circumstances.

People could not help but to be skeptical about this because even if the athletes have gone through tight screening, the process of reaching this level of competitions could still be tainted with such irregularities.

This is not surprising because even at the national level, this has already become an accepted fact.

We should remember that the athletes who are impersonating are actually students who should embody the right values that their teachers have shared and taught them. And those taking the cue to let these athletes accept and live the mistake are actually teachers who should possess the utmost gesture of right values.

It is just saddening to know that officials, teachers and students succumb to this kind of malpractice which is evidently turning into a giant in our system of competitions.

It is hoped that the annual Bicol Meet will not only breed the best of Bicol’s best athletes but also breed Bicol’s best values.

Finally, it is also hoped to be a venue for eradicating unhealthy practices in competitions and a golden opportunity for all Bicolanos to exhibit the right values in the name of fairness, unity and excellence in sports.

Right, for one, it has not become a priority for governments. I believe, if we could just build better sports communities, we will certainly promote healthy lifestyle which should be everyone's commitment and concern. Thanks Ely for the comments.

It's saddening to note that our government don't give much attention to the sports.
