Boxing's Blood and Guts Warriors
The Heart of Boxing
Boxers with Heart
Arturro Gatti and Mickey Ward: These two boxers will be forever bound together by their three classic wars. In the first fight Ward put Gatti down once and won a close bruising decision. Fight 2 saw Gatti winning a thrilling unanimous decision. Fight 3 saw Ward and Gatti wage war again. Gatti was down in this fight also. Ward landing his trademark left during the whole fight while bleeding profusely. Gatti breaks his right hand early in the fight but you could see him grit his teeth and throw it anyway. Gatti won the third meeting but boy was it a good one. The first and third fights won fight of the year. Ward has had many other thrilling braswls such as his fight of the year with Emmanuel Burton. Gatti has had more than a few come from behind wins himself. Such as his come from behind knockout Gabriel Ruelas. Thunder Gatti and Irish Mickey Ward had no quit in them and they both have showed tons of heart when fighting each other and other opponents as well. They took otherworldly punishment and never stopped trying.
Gatti had heart, power and a solid chin. Ward had heart, power and a solid chin. Three great fights between these two to be sure. Gatti was known to be bloody and beaten and somehow he staged tremendous comebacks often snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Even when he suffered devastating defeats, such as at the hands of Floyd Mayweather, he always showed tremendous heart.
Warriors of the Squared Circle
Diego Corrales and Rocky Graziano are two proud warriors who gave it their all in the ring. Chico Corrales has been in many wars and he has dug down and pulled victory out of the jaws of defeat several times. Corrales was being beaten by Lightweight King Jose Luis Castillo and was dropped twice in the 10th round. Somehow Corrales came back in the same round and scored the knockout to win the title, fight of the year and one of the best fights in boxing history was born. Rocky Graziano has fought with swollen shut eyes, a broken nose and a broken hand, no matter cause The Rock had heart. Graziano fought three wars with Tony Zale and to this day the Trilogy is still considered one of the best and most brutal ever witnessed. In the second fight with Zale Rocky had been down and his face was a bloody, swollen mess but he came back to score a brutal knockout and win the Middleweight Championship of the World. Corrales has came back to snatch victory from the hands of defeat several times. Rocky Graciano was losing most of his bouts before turning up the heat to separate his opponents from their senses. Rocky possessed power and an amazing heart.
Diego Corrales had height and reach advantages most of the time but still slugged it out on purpose. He was a warrior with power and heart and a shaky chin. Corrales got hurt many times including having his mouthpiece rip through his lip during a match.
Rocky Graziano had power and heart and a shaky chin just like Chico and he was very fun to watch indeed. Graziano would never quit and that combined with his one hitter quitter made him a special prizefighter.
Real Deal Warriors
Mathew Saad Muhammad and Evander Holyfield are two real warriors of the ring. Holyfield has been rocked around the ring and hurt only to come roaring back. Bert Cooper and Riddick Bowe had Evander nearly out on his feet but Evander came back to hurt both of his foes in the same round no less. Evander has had to fight through swollen eyes with nothing but his heart and will to win pulling him through. When he fought Dwight Qwai for the Cruiserweight title Holyfield looked beat up and exhausted after ten rounds but he somehow pushed himself to go the full 15 rounds and fight through the pain and fatigue. Mathew Saad Muhammad was nicknamed Miracle Matthew for his ability to mount comebacks after taking a pounding in the early rounds of the bout. Case in point, Yaqui Lopez beat Muhammad to the head and body for 12 rounds but somehow the bloodied and bruised Muhammad came back to win the 13th and score a knockout in the 14th round to retain his light heavyweight crown. He defended his title 8 successful times with 4 of those defenses being wars in which Matthew Muhammad had to battle back from the brink to pull out the victory.
Holyfield never shied from a challenge and his heart, chin, conditioning and fighting spirit can not be denied. Even though they said he was a small heavyweight he had no problem putting Ray Mercer, Riddick Bowe and Mike Tyson on the canvas.
