Best Hex Dumbbells 2014

Updated on January 2, 2014

Dumbbells are indispensable pieces of equipment for people who want to achieve and maintain an attractive and strong body. Though bodybuilding requires effort and investment in various areas of your life, lifting weights is undeniably the primary element of any muscle gain program. For this reason, choosing the best dumbbell set may turn out to be the number one factor that will lead your bodybuilding efforts to a successful outcome. With so many different types of dumbbells available for purchase, finding the dumbbell model best suiting your interests is going to be time consuming at best. To help you decide, this article attempts to give you an idea about the most popular fixed hex dumbbells in the market. Here, I have selected some of the best selling hex dumbbell models and provided some brief insight as to their pluses and minuses. For each model reviewed here, the price for 20 lbs weight is displayed to allow you to compare prices easily. If available, I also added pictures of each model held by people so you have a chance to compare the sizes.

Ordering Dumbbells Online

One difficulty you will face when purchasing your dream dumbbells is to transport them home. Your trip home with your new dumbbells often turns out to be your first workout and an unforgettable one, too. Ordering dumbbells from an online store however removes this initial challenge by having others do the shipping all the way to your door. The point you have to be careful about when buying dumbbells online is to read the product description in detail and make sure you are not ordering a single dumbbell instead of a pair. There are hordes of people who fail to do this and end up complaining they got a single dumbbell when they thought they were getting a bargain for a pair.

Cap Barbell Solid Hex Single Dumbbell

Cap Barbell company is known for supplying economic weightlifting equipment albeit not necessarily of premium quality. This dumbbell you see here is an example of Cap Barbell products. Solid Hex Dumbbell sells well but it is not certainly the best dumbbell you will get and the logic for its high sales is the incredibly low price.

Cap Barbell Solid Hex Single Dumbbell is going to provide you with weight at less than $ 1 per lbs. However, the dumbbells are very low quality. Customer reviews state that they break at the slightest impact, many a times come out of the box with the paint chipped away and feature metal shards.

Low quality and deficient durability should be expected when you are getting something so cheap but what is surprising is that some dumbbells of this brand turn out to have incorrect weights. Actually, there is more than one customer complaining about dumbbell masses varying up to 5 lbs from the desired value.

In short, this model will not give you the best weightlifting experience but it is one of the cheapest dumbbells you will come across. If you do not want to spend a lot of money and just want want something heavy to lift, you may give a try to this item and it is undeniable that many people buy this brand and are happy with it. But, you would be well-advised to check the better quality dumbbells below before you make your final decision.

Cap Barbell 35 lbs Rubber Coated Hex Dumbbell

Cap Barbell Rubber Coated Hex Dumbbell

This item is given a place on this review because it sells very well and thus needs to receive some comments. Cap Barbell Rubber Coated Hex Dumbbell is popular probably because the brand is famous for its economic products but in this case we have a dumbbell that is neither high quality nor cheap.

There is some uncertainity as to the long term performance of Cap Barbell dumbbells. Customers complain about rubber coat cracking after a while and handles showing signs of rusting. There are also too many complaints about strong plastic smell. Yet the worst thing about these dumbbells is the awful chamicals used for the rubber coating as the product description warns: This product contains one or more phthalate chemicals known to the state of California to cause birth defects and other reproductive harm. Sure, you are not going to eat the plastic but why let it in your home in the first place?

These dumbbells could be tolerated if they had been much cheaper than they actually are. Yet, they do not live up to the apparent mission of the brand, which is to supply low price weightlifting equipment. Although not very expensive on absolute terms, it is not at all cheaper than other rubberized hex dumbbells and the price, coupled with the apparently lower quality makes this dumbbell not such a great choice for a strength training tool.

All in all, Cap Barbell Rubber Coated Hex Dumbbells do sell well but I have no idea why anyone would prefer this item rather than the below Reebok Dumbbell, which obviously offers better quality at a similar price. Not denying the fact that there are many people out there who will buy the Cap Barbell dumbbells, I strongly advise you check out the Reebok ones first.

20 lbs Reebok Rubber Hex Dumbbell

Reebok Rubber Hex Dumbbell

Reebok Rubber Hex Dumbbell is the best selling Hex Dumbbell with a rubber covering. This product offers the best price-performance ratio and is the dumbbell model I would buy if I was buying one at the time this review is being written.

Everything is fine with this dumbbell and people who buy this item end up very happy. Chrome-plated handles are easy to grip, rubber covered heads offer protection against humidity and impacts and the price is right. This dumbbell set offers everything to people who want something that will last and has a reasonable cost.

Unlike most other rubber covered dumbbells, Reebok dumbbells with different weights have different colors. I think this is a great feature because it looks nice and fun and it makes it so much easier to find the weight you are looking for. Thumbs up for Reebok!

There are hardly any complaints about Reebok Rubber Hex Dumbbells and they are the usual grease covered handle complaints you inevitably come across on all dumbbell models. With thousands of people buying the same item, it is inevitable that someone will have the misfortune of getting an oily handle, which could be wiped away in seconds with a towel. Having read a small library of dumbbell reviews, I ignore these usual complaints if they are so few and I can confidently recommend Reebok dumbbells as a great buy.
