CMLL Super Viernes 2/19 Preview!

Updated on February 18, 2016

I know, I know; this is supposed to be the Failbag. It’s coming girls and boys, don’t worry. For now though, I thought I’d deliver a preview of tomorrow night’s CMLL Super Viernes show, a Friday Night occasion that has recently become must see TV. Seriously, I don’t know what has gotten into Paco Alonso and company, but the last few weeks have seen CMLL (at least on Friday) deliver some great matches, a few backstage segments and (don’t die of a heart attack on this one) ACTUAL STORYLINE DEVELOPMENT! This is unprecedented; this is madness!

And best of all, it looks like CMLL is poised to continue this momentum tomorrow. We have four matches that look to be must see, several potential feuds that will likely have another chapter added as we hit the road to next month’s Homenaje a Dos Leyendas and (perhaps best of all) no Thunder in sight! Good news is everywhere in Arena Mexico right now. Let’s take a look at this card and get more excited shall we?!

Oro Jr. and Star Jr. vs. Arkangel de la Muerte and Metalico

What to Expect: What we have here is a case of young up and comers taking on a duo of veterans. Basically, the veterans are going to have total control on how this match plays out and how good it ultimately is. Get ready for one or two jumps and a whole lot of “this is very okay”.

Winners: Let’s go with de la Muerte and Metalico. I have no reason why, but then again I also don’t know why this match even exists. I just got a feeling alright?

Marcela, Princess Sugehit and Skadi vs. Dalys, Reina Isis and Tiffany

What to Expect: You can expect me to spend every minute of this match bemoaning the fact that Zeuxis isn’t involved, while also hoping that injury she may have suffered the other day isn’t serious. A CMLL with Zeuxis is like a Lucha Underground with Aerostar, and I want no part of it. As for the match, I suppose it’ll be alright. Again, expect some solid yet unspectacular action, with the action alternating between really crisp (when Sugehit is involved) and then not so crisp.

Winners: Team Sugehit. Can we get to the good stuff yet?!

Angel de Oro, Esfinge and Guerrero Maya Jr. vs. Dragon Rojo Jr., Olimpico and Virus

What to Expect: Now this is more like it! This just goes to show you how good CMLL has been in recent weeks that I’m annoyed it took till the third match to get to the good stuff. Look for this to be a good one; the technico team is loaded with talented dudes and you never are in doubt when Virus is involved. The pace will definitely pick up for this one.

Winners: I say Virus pulls this one out for his team in the third fall with something crafty. You just don’t bet against Virus guys; it’s like picking anything else but Blade Runner when you’re looking through the science fiction. You know immediately after you’ve done it you’ve made the biggest mistake since the Academy gave the Oscar to Eddie Redmayne instead of Leo (spoiler alert!).

Dragon Lee, Stuka Jr. and Volador Jr. vs. Gran Guerrero, Kamaitachi and Negro Casas

What to Expect: Want proof that CMLL is doing stuff right at the moment; this match here features two of the hottest feuds in the company right now, five all world talents and IS STILL ONLY THE THIRD TO LAST MATCH ON THE CARD TOMORROW NIGHT! If you had told me CMLL would have this deep a card two months ago, I would’ve assumed CMLL had raided AAA in the meantime or that I was being lied to like Ahnuld in Batman and Robin.

Anyways, this match! Aside from Gran Guerrero (who’s by no means terrible), there’s top fifty wrestler in the world everywhere you turn here and each one with a story and a motivation worth fighting for. We know Dragon Lee and Kamaitachi will bring as they do that every match, and Volador-Negro Casas has really heated up as the weeks have gone on. I haven’t gotten the chance to check out their match from this past Monday, but reviews for it were great and I imagine we’ll see more of the same from them again tomorrow as the build towards that hair vs. hair match intensifies. The only questions I have is whether any of Negro’s family is getting involved once more and if Volador is ready to bring out that surprise he’s promising. By the way, if that surprise isn’t LA Park, I’m going to be incredibly sad. I don’t care how unrealistic it is; the people want the Chairman! THE PEOPLE NEED THE CHAIRMAN!

Winners: Dragon Lee got one over Kamaitachi last week and Volador successfully defended his NWA Historic Welterweight Championship this past Monday against Casas. Long story short, the rudos are taking this one two falls to one with a screwy finish, as the build for both Lee-Kamaitachi and Volador-Casas will continue. No complaints here at all.

CMLL Welterweight Championship Match

Mascara Dorada (c) vs. Mephisto

What to Expect: This match was brought on by Mephisto totally owning Dorada last week at the end of last week’s Super Viernes show and issuing a challenge for Dorada’s title. Thus here we are, and I’m thinking this one will be the match of the night. Mephisto has looked really good the past several weeks teaming with Casas and his pals in the main event, and Dorada has been breathtaking since his return from New Japan. Give these two eighteen to twenty minutes and I think we’re going to see another early candidate for CMLL Match of the Year.

Winner: I’m going Dorada here. The man just won the Welterweight Title less than a month ago at FantasticaMania and is having his first title defense here; unless I’m mistaken, it’s more likely the Cleveland Browns will win the Super Bowl next year than a CMLL Champion losing his belt in the first defense. Thus, Dorada will take it two falls to one. The only question is whether this is a one off or if the match ending features a controversial ending that leads to either a) a title rematch at Homenaje a Dos Leyendas or b) a mask vs. mask match between the two at the same event. Either way, sign me up. Can you imagine a Homenaje a Dos Leyendas that features Casas-Volador (hair vs. hair), Kamaitachi-Dragon Lee (for the CMLL World Lightweight Championship) and Dorada-Mephisto?! That doesn’t even count the potential match I’m about to discuss either! Has Paco been possessed by cubsfan or something?!

Los Ingobernables vs. Atlantis, Maximo Sexy and Valiente

What to Expect: This matchup has actually been in the makings for awhile; for the past few months, CMLL had been teaming Ingobernables members La Mascara and “The Cornette Killer” Marco Corleone with Maximo and, you’ll never believe this, all three guys managed to get along. Well, until last week when Maximo teamed with Corleone and Rush and accidentally cost the team victory when he gave his trademark kiss to Rush instead of Mr. Niebla (who proceeded to roll up a stunned Rush for the win). And that children is how a feud is born!

As such, the most interesting this about this match (which should be pretty solid) will be how it continues. Do we start to see cracks in Ingobernables with Marco and Mascara feeling sorry for Maximo? Does the group band together stronger than ever? Is this the start of a build to an Ingobernables-Team Maximo match at Homenaje a Dos Leyendas or is it the beginning of a build to (gasp) a Rush-Maximo match for the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship? So many questions, so many possibilities and so much fun to have here! And that’s not even considering that Atlantis is involved, which is always a good decision.

Winners: I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Maximo picks up a surprise win here with a kiss and roll up on Rush, further gaining an edge in the psychological warfare between the two. I know, it pains me to pick against Marco too, but you can't win them all. FORGIVE ME CORNETTE KILLER! After that, who knows where they go? It’s going to be a good place one way or another though, mark my words!

And that is how things are done! I’ll be back tomorrow, and this time it will be a Failbag. Hey, when the questions don’t come right away I’ve got to do something to occupy my time. SEND ME QUESTIONS PEEPS! Till then, let me introduce you to the Jamie Vardy face. It's all knowing and contains secret messages!
